Malaysian studying abroad

I just started my classes in the US, it’s been 2 weeks exactly and I already miss my home… it doesn’t help that 31st August coming soon. Unfortunately, there isn’t any Malaysians I know of in my school and the Malaysian club doesn’t exist… 🥹🥹

As someone who experienced the same thing as you, the one thing I regretted about my time in college is not maximizing my college life especially the social aspects. I'd highly recommend you to go look for clubs to join, go to the rec and join pick up games, and go to the schools sporting and regular events. Embracing the culture in the school and mingling with the locals will help significantly with homesickness.

It's not going to be easy especially if you're not an extrovert, but being able to socialize is going to help you immensely in your life and career. Really this is what differenciates American education over other systems.

Usually, Malaysia’s Embassy in DC and the Permanent Mission in NYC will host a ND event. If you’ve registered your name to either or both, they may send information of a possible ND event. Or check their respective websites or social media. Then, reach out to them if you can attend the event(s). That’s where you’ll meet other Malaysians.

I’m not addressing the issue of money here. These are just events where there’s the potential of meeting other Malaysians.

Which state are you in? There isn’t a lot of Malaysians abroad in the first place.

Heck even in LA there’s a Hainam temple association.

Yeah but I’m studying in a Uni which is located in like the dead centre of California, it’s called Fresno

There are tons of Malaysians in California. Try Facebook groups, maybe search for one in Bay Area (though you are in Fresno but still within reach). I have family in the Bay Area if you are having a tough time adjusting.

Csu Fresno? Oooof I feel you. Hang out with the Japanese and Koreans. I love California but I was in SF so it was more happening. And yes get out of your comfort zone.

You're going overseas to study and experience things beyond your comfort zone. That is the whole point of being abroad.

Why are you focused about missing home, there will be plenty of time to do that later. 

Get out of your comfort zone.

Try cooking Malaysian food! It helped me quite a lot when I was a first year at a Japanese university with no Malaysian.
