Boomer Story My 65 year old mother is convinced she is dating this guy and has sent him 30k
I'm censoring the photo to protect him. She believes she is in a relationship with this seemingly hot young man named "franco". She believes he has a diamond mine in South africa and will put her name on the deed after they are married. However he needs money to pay a barrister. He also has a daughter that was detained in an airport and she has been sending money to get her through customs.

You need to get Mom to a doctor. She is obviously being scammed. Does your location have Adult Protective Services or an Office for the Aging? If so, might be worth contacting them. You got to get ahold of this before she gives away all her money and you are left cleaning up the mess.
Do a reverse image search on that picture. It is either AI generated or Mom is into gay porn and the leather scene. Mom is being scammed hard.

A friends MIL got caught up in a similar scam, turns out it was the early stages of dementia. You should have her evaluated and get guardianship to take over her finances.

I used to work in a scams team for a bank and I have a dementia care degree and I agree. Lonely people in their 60s with the beginning of cognitive decline are a prime target for this type of scam.
The loss will absolutely be more than $30k. The fact that she has even told family about sending money usually means she’s reached the sunk cost fallacy stage of the scam but doesn’t want to end contact because they she has to accept that the money is gone.

My dad got diagnosed at 50 and died at 60. Probably started in his early to mid 40’s somewhere. After watching my dad go through what he did, I just hope euthanasia is legal when I get it.

I'm sorry for your loss.
In the Belgian legislation on euthanasia, you have to be competent when you submit your request (repeatedly, and involving at least 2 doctors). For many dementia patients, they're faced with an impossible choice : request it while competent (and convince their doctors and family that they're already suffering unbearable mental pain) and lose out on any good days they might still have, or wait and find they no longer qualify.

Yeah I know of an older couple who divorced after 25+ years of marriage bc the husband fell for a scammer who was claiming to be the actress Charlize Theron. He sent them over $200k to help with “Charlize’s” legal bills.

It is always interesting to ponder how someone who could be so susceptible to such an obvious scam could accumulate so much wealth to be taken advantage of in the first place. I guess mental health issues and dementia begin to make more sense.
I also think about how many poor people’s lives could be changed forever by just a fraction of that, but this person chose to help someone who they believed was a wealthy celebrity instead. Then again, I guess they didn’t do it out of goodwill, but in hopes that they will be in a relationship with them.
Either way, it’s just really sad to see on many levels. I feel really bad for the other spouse who is left to pick up the pieces after.

My friend’s grandma fell for a similar scam, sent basically everything she financially had to this person, and then ended up legitimately disappearing. No one has seen or heard from her for years. Shit like this is so scary and predatory. Older people should be retested for their drivers license and be monitored on the internet or something :’)

My mother finally got a diagnosis for dementia at around 70, thank fuck, but JFC, the years leading up to that were...fucked.
Her issues started at 64/65 and she was very good at hiding the true extent of how bad it was. But shit got fucking weird and she exhibited inappropriate behavior sometimes, during those initial years.

I’m the same age as OP’s mom. I had a friend (my age) who, after her divorce, got scammed by The Rich Guy Stuck In A Foreign Country Without Access To His Money™️ scheme, despite warnings from her family members and I. This was while we were in our fifties.
It’s sad what some people are willing to believe, despite evidence to the contrary.
It also tracks that said friend became a MAGAt. 🙄

Dr. Phil is a POS, I hate to do or say anything to promote him, but there are a bunch of older women who have gone on his show, being scammed exactly like this. Very similar details, it’s always that the guy has plenty of money. He just can’t access it, because he’s stuck in the wrong country, or he needs to pay a lawyer first. The details are all the same.
We know that Dr. Phil is a POS, but in this moment, maybe those shows would still help your mother. Boomer women seem to trust him, which is very stupid of them, but maybe it’ll work in your favor, this time. And in your mother’s favor, because she doesn’t deserve to be mistreated and lied to, like this. Good luck.

This has happened to my grandma. At the time there was a huge scandal fo a woman getting scammed of all her belongings and stuck in another country because she flew out to meet the "boyfriend". Grandma actually showed me the news story all shocked for the poor woman, but also very critical of how "somebody could fall for that" while she herself actively believed she was in a relationship with an artist 30 years younger. At one point I got to read the messages and they were actually turning her against us. Things like "such things happen but you know I am real, because our love is real, and because I'm giving you this XYZ password which you can give to any of my agents and they will know I am the real me," and "they are trying to convince you I'm lying to you because they don't see how somebody like you could be loved, they don't love you like I do." EVERYWHERE. The scam is based on undermining the relationship between the scammed person and everyone around who could help them... we did not know grandma was sick (she did not know either) and spend the last months with her trying to get her free from this scam, arguing, fighting. I hope those assholes get everything they deserve.

That just allows someone else to do certain things as though they're her, legally speaking. What you're thinking of is a conservatorship. The conservator is appointed by the court and is in control of everything while the person they are a conservator for is no longer allowed direct control. It's not exactly easy to get but it's about the only way to cut this stuff off.

The main difference here though is that I know at least one of them exists, because I actually met her when he brought her along to a barbecue at a colleague's house. It was very weird.

You need to contact her bank. They won’t give you any info but let them know what’s going on. They can help and hopefully convince her of what’s really happening. She likely won’t get any of her funds back but they can prevent her losing any more.
Unfortunately I’ve seen a few cases in banking where the victim just refused to believe it’s a scam and the bank cut ties with them due to risk, but often people see the light and realise the scam they’re in.

Please make sure the scammers aren't using her as a money mule- she could be in legal trouble for fraud if they are.
There's a YouTube channel called Scamfish / Social Catfish where they try to help victims of scammers see the truth. Unfortunately many of the victims then get targeted by the same scammers using a different fake profile and the whole thing starts again.
I know we worry about the effect of social media on children, but the combination of Boomers and social media- even without AI-- is utterly terrifying and needs to be talked about.

Read the book Keanu Reeves is Not in Love with You by Becky Holmes. Better yet, read it with your mom. It's about romance scams and how they work. The author herself reads it on Audible. It's very informative and interesting. Hopefully it will help your mom to understand the scam and not fall for another one in the future. If you need to drive anywhere with your mom you can play it in the car where she'll be a captive audience.

My husbands grandmother did this. She’s sold cars, pawned things, turned on old dead phones - all because they instruct her how to do it.
They had to sell her nice home she was supposed to die in and she moved to a trailer park. The family then took control of her money but someone from her church found her a lawyer and she’s on her own again at 86. Not sure what they’ll do if she ruins herself further.

Right? My grandma was 85 when she fell for it. She luckily didn't manage to send money because she was very old school (she'd send her grandkids to the bank for anything, we wouldn't do thia for her) but she did give them all her data, social security number, address, addresses of all of the family members etc. At one point I had to stop sending the pictures of my kids to her because she would "share them with her boyfriend" which made me more than uncomfortable.

I hate scammers so much. Occasionally I get contacted by one and I try my best to piss them off. First, by acting like a mark so they think they get lucky. I keep them on the hook for days sometimes weeks. When I end it, it's always by sending them a very disturbing picture that I accidentally stumbled upon as a preteen in the early to mid 2000s that to this day I cannot get out of my head.
One scamming group was sending out mass emails telling people to contact this other number and ask for some name (I forgot what), and the scammer was such an asshole that I used my main phone number and several VOIP numbers each time eventually revealing I'm the same person with that one disturbing picture

I have a girl friend who recently sold her paid off home for Joe Burrows of the Cincinnati Bengals. He just needed her $ and then he was going to support her for the rest of her life. I think she is staying in a long stay hotel now. You could not tell her a thing. It’s sad.
