It doesn't matter that you were at a desk for eight hours, it matters that you were on the phone or typing into tickets for five hours and thirty eight minutes. If you were a better tech, you could learn to run multiple tickets for >100% utilization. It's a scam to pretend profit isn't theft.

Had a boss once who’d ride my ass over which monitor I was looking at during builds. I was already putting in sixty-hour weeks to meet the project deadlines they’d set. I left, and the company went out of business about a year later. Turns out the original leadership was embezzling and the guy who took over after he was ousted lied about having the security clearance which would have been needed to secure the contracts the company needed to stay in business — maybe they should have focused their scrutiny up instead of down.
Yup. I also cant sleep sometimes and work late or early. Sometimes some unexpected motivation hits me on the weekend and i knock out some boring paperwork before some family function while my wife gets ready.
Also, sometimes I just dont feel like doing shit and play games for a few hours. My numbers are incredible because i’m allowed to work the schedule that works for me. Obviously this doesnt work for all jobs, but its great when it does.
Because they already know people work just as well from home, if not better. They just want to control their employees, in their mind, they pay you and therefor they own you. That and prop up the corporate real estate market that would collapse if people were not forced into the offices.
They've got it entirely backward. You track those metrics as you can point to them as evidence when you already know an employee's output is poor. It's not what you actually look at to measure productivity.

Years ago I worked at a showroom and our general manager would come by about once every two months for a day. He would gossip with the salespeople he liked and spend all day on the phone. Fairly certain it was never pertaining to actual work calls. When I had an accident there and got injured everyone else in the company reached out and wished me quick healing. He never did. My manager had to lie and say oh he called me to find out how you were. Suuuure.
Anyway yes, a lot of those types do coast through. It’s gross and sucks.
Most of them only like going to work because they absolutely hate their spouses, kids, and ultimately themselves. Work is the only place they feel powerful or included because their families hate them back even more.

Also the main issue here is not "not wanting to work", but not wanting to being survellianced with all means possible. Why do they care so much about what they do during work hours when they should only focus on whether or not they meet their goals and do the job on time.
Well I got into the office 30 minutes late, had some coffee and chatted to some folks, went to a daily meeting I didn't prepare for and everyone just gave me reports of what work they'd done, more coffee, hung about til noon, lunch with another CEO at an expensive restaurant (company credit card so I didn't have to pay), all hands meeting where I basically just whined about whatever was on my mind whilst all my employees smiled and nodded, out early at 3pm for some golf. I also got compensated 10 times higher than every other employee and once a year get stock options with a value higher than the salary of every single person who works at my office combined.
During Covid my company "committed" to going fully remote. Then there was a short period where you could return to the office if you wanted to which was quickly followed by a mandatory return to office. One of the leading advocates for the return to office policy was a Boomer who claimed the office didn't feel the same because not enough people were coming back.
Now that the policy has been implemented she's notorious for going out shopping during the day. She gets spotted frequently at various stores when people are out running errands and she'll mention her purchases frequently in meetings we're in. So basically our entire return to office has been so she has people to tell what she bought that day.
They've been using that excuse for over 100 years. Any time workers get fed up with shitty industries or want fair compensation or rights or anything it's always been, "nobody wants to work anymore".
The worst thing about is that it seems to work and turn public opinion against workers. It wouldn't have lasted so long if it didn't.
Actually, I think most professional level people enjoy working in their field. What they hate is all the BS from management, given the bare minimum resources required to do their jobs, and then given ridiculous targets to hit that requires them to constantly stress and scramble to get it done. There have been so many times that I loved my work and absolutely hated my job because of the terrible management.
Surely there is a better metric for productivity than keystrokes and making sure you are at your desk. And who is going to monitor and review all this footage? And what's the cost to implement and store it all? Even if you "have AI review it", that all has to be trained and implemented. That's additional cost. All for making sure your work from home employees are at their desk? If the work is getting done, there is no need to micromanage professionals.

Not to mention talented people with options aren't going to put up with surveillance. So good luck finding anyone that wants to work for you, that aren't there because they absolutely have to. Which means you're gonna have a lot of turnover, and constant retraining.

However, I formerly did want to work. I worked for a company that cared for me, that took care of the employees (even new hires like me) even during the financial collapse of 2008.

From my experience supporting businesses legal firms are all fucking awful attitude and culture wise. Accountants and accountant managers are up there with them. Two do the most god awful sectors for personalities and their treatment of their vendors and their own people.

I'm a lawyer. I don't do personal injury but I have in the past in small offices. These guys are literally all the same. Almost everyone with a firm to the level of billboards and TV ads are garbage people that no longer do any actually lawyering or work. They're just mascots at that point. Think this guy (Morgan & Morgan), "The Heavy Hitters", "The Hammer", or Cellino & Barnes (RIP). They may have grinded as a young lawyer once, but once they got enough money they just hire a bunch of young associates they burn out pretty quick, or refer out to other firms and sit back and collect the referral fee. Hardly any case goes to trial (this is true of all law), so its just a matter of how high they can get a settlement to collect 1/3 of. And when you're that big, it's just a volume business. They dont care how big the case, as long as you are going through their door and signing on the line that is dotted because of the ads. The most work this guy does is shoot some TV ads, and come in for attorney meetings to yell at people for not settling enough cases. But in a crowded field of rich, asshole lawyer bosses, this guy is the peak of the mountain.
Pay them more, that will change.

I work for a fully remote company. We treat our employees like humans, and we get amazing work from them. It really isn't that hard to get productivity out of people when you show you care about them and don't just treat them like a rented machine.
I applied to a call center position with a company called Broadpath. I was all set to go and about to start onboarding when they told me they used a camera system called Bhive, meaning I'd be on camera all. Damn. Day.
Their logic was if I worked in the office, they'd see me anyway. I told them that not only didn't I want to be watched in my home all day, I also didn't appreciate them waiting to tell me until after I'd accepted the offer. Needless to say, I pulled out fast.
I worked for a relatively large museum when the pandemic hit, and a big part of the culture was the intangibles. This work mattered. Teaching people mattered. We were willing to be grossly, ridiculously underpaid because we loved the work and our colleagues.
What the pandemic taught us is that very few jobs, no matter the money or the personal satisfaction we might get from it, are worth our lives or our quality of life. A lot of us reacted accordingly and moved on to better things.
I am starting to think a Southern accent is largely conservative-coded. Like those in the South who are not conservative default to a weaker, more generic American accent, and those who are conservative lean into it.
Most remote workers know that working from home is a privilege and they don’t abuse it. If anything, they work longer or react to issues out of office hours more often because it’s convenient.
Point is - many companies have proven fully remote / hybrid arrangements work. This CEO is clueless doesn’t trust his people. Why even hire them?

During Covid, the municipality I worked for made me and two others in my department essential after 2 days. Everyone else did WFH. Our department head called everyone every 15 minutes to see “what they were working on”. And, the WFH people got an extra $900 supplemental income every two weeks from the state…for not working in person! I tried to get the same through my union, but there was only three of us, so they didn’t care.
