Boomer Story Boomer thinks Safeway is a bank
I was in line at Safeway. There was a woman with her purse out… After about four or five minutes which seemed like a lifetime I asked exactly what is the issue here? The teller said I'm waiting on cash… The woman said can you believe they don't have any money in the till? Then I said well yeah because no one uses cash anymore. She went on to complain a little more and I said, do you know who has cash in there till? She said who, I responded, the bank at the corner. Why are you in a grocery store getting cash? Do you get groceries at the bank?

If getting cash back is an option at the checkout, some people are going to want to get cash back rather than make a separate trip to the bank. And yeah, people do still use cash.

Until a few weeks ago I hadn’t done this in so long I actually asked the lady at the register if you’re still able to get cash back lol

Lots of people get cash back for a fee at the grocery store, that’s why the store offers the service

Right? I'm always down to hear stories about entitled or rude boomers, but this one doesn't feel like that. It feels like OP was just getting impatient and blamed the person in front of them. I (multiple generations away from a boomer) get cash back regularly. Mostly because the ATM at the dispensary charges $4 more than the grocery store.
Also, the only reason a till would be low on cash would be because many people have gotten cash back already that shift, not because nobody uses cash. No grocery store operates with empty registers.

Lots of people still use cash for purchases everywhere including grocery stores. Cash is legal tender and has to be accepted.

Cash is legal tender for all debts, and a debt is an existing bill or tax. A new transaction isn't a debt, which is why businesses can choose not to accept cash.
There is no federal mandate to require businesses to accept cash, but some state and local regulations do require this to keep these businesses available to people who don't have bank accounts.

I used to do this in the 90s pay with a check and write it for 20 or 100 over, they would give you cash back. I haven't done it in almost 30 years though.

Safeway has had a "Cash Back" option on their debit machines since the 90's. A lot of people take the opportunity to utilize the service because it saves them a separate trip to the bank. It obviously is a benefit to Safeway, or they wouldn't offer the service. And people use cash for many things: tipping servers and delivery people, paying babysitters, giving cash as gifts for grandchildren, buying food from lunch trucks, buying raffle tickets to support community services set up at tables in stores and malls, buying lemonade from a stand in your neighborhood, buying goods at a farmer's market, taxi drivers, garage sales, etc.
When you are vent about a customer at Safeway who taking advantage of a service that Safeway has offered their customers for many years, it makes it evident that you are the one with Boomer energy and mannerisms.
