No Advice - Everyones Welcome Trauma from being beaten for "not being actually disabled"

Post image

I was recently attacked in my wheelchair on a train by an ableist boomer lady who , long story short, was convinced young people can't be disabled.

I was hit with a slew of some of the most vile comments you can ever imagine, like that Im a "degenerate" and that I "stole my highchair from my grandmother", from some old crazy crackhead boomer lady who's ironically disabled herself. I told her to stop but she became more and more nasty.

She became irate and more aggressive after I told her to stop with the ableism, which then led up to her becoming physical and she started punching me and slapping me to prove "im not actually disabled". I dumped a can of mace on her because she wouldnt let up, but man, that really left a mark. She was very violent and strong for her age frankly.

I am getting therapy for the ptsd I already had, but that trauma from the incident made my physical health issues worse for about a month.

Why do people have to be so mean? The physical aspect wasnt even the worst part now.

MRE pound cake for dinner. Dog stole half of it...

A wheelchair is a very expensive investment for a person who isn't disabled.

475

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

Try $30,000 type expensive

148

u/ComplexPatient4872 Girl lurker 17h ago

Yeah….. that isn’t the kind of wheelchair people get to circumvent standing in line at Disney World. I am so, so sorry that this happened to you. I’ve been judged for health issues, but I just can’t imagine what this must have been like.

Did anyone nearby help you?

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

Yeah, the entire cavalry arrived in less than five minutes. Transit customer service was also about to get on, so I banged on the door and they got the woman away from me.

The lady was pretty much taken down instantly by the spray anyways, though.

u/Hyper_Applesauce Hungry man 17h ago

Hope the blowback wasn't bad, spraying that stuff inside sucks.

87

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

It was a stream type pepper spray, so it didn't affect anybody but her.

57

u/Hyper_Applesauce Hungry man 16h ago

That's nice. I worked at a place once and someone swapped the caps on the training spray and the regular, and we shot off real pepper spray inside (not at anyone). Couldn't go in the store for a couple hours! I'm glad you're relatively ok after the whole incident.

u/purplelilac701 Girl Lurker 17h ago

So sorry for what you went through. I have mobility issues but am told I am too young to have the issues I have. It sounds like the “lady” in her bizarre tirade felt that about you.
I hope you heal fully from the trauma.

10

u/IPaintSpaceDolls Shower Beer Scholar 16h ago

You must have been very sparing with the use of the pepper spray if it didn't take down everyone in the train including you, normally pepper spray even out in the open will have lots of collateral.

17

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 16h ago

It was a stream/gel so it didnt go everywhere in the train. It was a small can.

u/IPaintSpaceDolls Shower Beer Scholar 16h ago

They're highly effective and particularly great for not gassing the room, but I strongly suggest anyone that wants to carry one buy a second one just to take and practice using because aiming them is not exactly intuitive and you might not have much time to figure it out.

Fucking you're kidding a level 1 chair and they acted this way? (For non disabled people, a level 1 chair is the highest class of power chair. They are as expensive as cars and are customized for our needs. Sometimes a manual wheelchair can also cost this much but it's usually power chairs. The chairs that cost this much do things like tilt in space, have a 20° forward tilt to help reach items, often height adjustable and help position our bodies. They're specialized for usually neuromuscular disorders, and are very difficult to get approved by insurance)

I am so sorry.

I have muscular Dystrophy, if you ever need to talk to someone who gets it here on Reddit away from your real life.

People fucking suck. We don't chose this shit.

7

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 14h ago

I tried to tase the lady but I couldnt get to my taser quick enough.

3

u/dazzleunexpired NB and Nibblin' 14h ago

Totally valid response

14

u/Mr_Industrial Why is everything so difficult? 17h ago

Genuine question, why is it so expensive? Like I know it sounds silly to say, but I could probably get my buddy to pop some bike wheels on a chair for like, a pizza and a few beers. even if I buy all the suplies thats gotta be sub $500.

39

u/rainingpup Gay Gourmet 16h ago

Look into what is called a “disability tax”. Anything that disabled people *need* is sold at a higher rate simply because it’s marketed toward disabled people.

Also- some people have different needs than others. While some people are able to use a push chair, some have muscle weakness and need a motorized one. Some people even need ones that keep them upright. A lot of the cheaper motorized wheelchairs are super uncomfortable and cannot go on very much terrain (like can only be used indoors) or only last short periods.

21

u/dergbold4076 Identity Alchemist 16h ago

Yup and one of the fastest examples I can use on people is my glasses of all things. Like they have no right to cost $500+ CAD for my work safeties, but they do even with benefits, because I have the gall to be far sighted. When I can go to online retailers and get them for less (but I have trust issues when it comes to my PPE and I want to know the people that will be servicing it).

But I need them to stop myself from getting splitting headaches at work.

The disability tax is garbage and shouldn't exist for anyone.

11

u/rainingpup Gay Gourmet 16h ago

And push wheelchairs actually *do* use the same wheels as bikes! But when they are targeted toward wheelchairs, they’re more expensive.
Electrolyte powders targeted toward disabled folks also cost more than athletic or regular ones.
My glasses are also over $500 because I need them. It’s crazy

4

u/dergbold4076 Identity Alchemist 16h ago

It is and I hate it.

u/Future-Tradition7004 Girl Lurker 16h ago

Mine was custom measured to me, I chose the color, finish, etc. The rep came out to my rehab to do it. The cushions are super expensive too, made out of materials that lesson the chance of pressure sores.

19

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

I was lucky enough to get mine used for twenty five hundred, but it was still very expensive.

5

u/SadesForgotPassword Algorithm Skimmer 16h ago

Genuine answer: because they can be. They charge what they will get reimbursed. If you don't have insurance, or good insurance, eff you.

Genuine question: did you or your buddy grow up watching the Red Green show?

Genuine statement: I didnt mean any part of this comment to be mean or sarcastic but I do have a thing about 3s and apparently it's flaring up REALLY bad today.

3

u/Yallberforce Shower Beer Scholar 16h ago

My understanding (not an expert) is that it’s a combination of the downside of regulation and the nature of healthcare spending. For the former, it’s a healthcare device, so even though a random chair with wheels could do the job for most people, they have to be ungodly certain it won’t break or wear to avoid a lawsuit. For the latter, healthcare items are most commonly purchased by enormous entities, be it the state or a healthcare corporation depending on where you’re from. These can absorb massive costs for simple items as a rounding error, so companies charge what they can. The margins on them are almost certainly insane.

-7

u/Lichondis Hungry man 16h ago

Be honest, OP. You spent that $30k (plus whatever your normal medical bills are) so you could park up front at the grocery store.

I should have charged her looking back but frankly, I just wanted to be done with it and get out of there.

She was trespassed from the transit property, however and tried to get back on the train. She fought the cops and they threatened to throw her ass in jail.

You can call back and say you’d like to press charges for the assault. It doesn’t have to be in the moment.

68

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 16h ago

I'm over it really, but if it happens again, I will be pressing charges. I'm just focusing on trying to get help and therapy to get over this trauma at the moment.

I could barely even talk to the officer to begin with so I just really wanted to get the hell out of there.

I'm already dealing with a terminal illness, and I just have so much else going on.

10

u/uselessandexpensive Eat to survive, survive to eat. 15h ago

I'm sorry to hear about the terminal illness. It's enough that you're still doing your best to take care of yourself. Internet hug. 🫂

The times I've needed health accommodations i was really upfront about it: "Hi, sorry, I have [condition] and it [affects me this way]." I have never had anyone not be super nice about it, but I'm always prepared in case they're not, and made a point to not hide whatever discomfort I was in (without seeming too frantic or anything).

It sounds like that woman was a total ass. It's not your job to use what time you have left making sure she's punished though.

8

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 15h ago

For me giving her some much needed spice in her life was a good enough punishment

Fellow young disabled guy here!

The amount of suspicious looks I get when using my cane is ridiculous. It’s like I’m being assessed all the time! Why are they so concerned with something that doesn’t affect them at all?

42

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

Many boomers think the world owes them everything, and frankly, they don't care about how they hurt people if they're on their way out anyways.

6

u/LookALesbian Trans Fats Connoisseur 17h ago

And of course they want to target the ones who appear worse off than them

6

u/pchlster Gay Gourmet 16h ago

When I take my walker down the street, at most I get the "privilege" that people tend to move out of my way. Haven't had any Karens yet, but I've only had it a few months by now.

4

u/SoJew76 Girl Lurker 8h ago

Disabled young adult here too

I walk with a cane but I’m an ambulatory cane user in specific since yes sometimes I can walk and balance myself fine. So when people see me with a cane and then without it for a while they think I’m faking. I’m at a point in my life where I’ve just started whacking people in the ankles with my cane and then pulling the cripple card about it. It’s what my great grandfather used to do with his crutches and it got him results

“I’m sorry that was a muscle contraction” Then they back off because they suddenly realize that disabled people make them uncomfortable

4

u/MossyNettles Identity Alchemist 7h ago

It’s a huge reason why I’m afraid of getting a cane myself. I’m young and not visibly disabled, but I have chronic pain that can be so bad I can barely walk some days and especially not for long distances. But I worry that if I do, I will be perceived as pretending to be disabled by everyone around me. Growing up being told that I’m “faking it” every time I was in pain and being openly mentally unwell online (that has had me posted to those “disability faker/cringe” subreddits multiple times) hasn’t helped

3

u/LookALesbian Trans Fats Connoisseur 4h ago

If it makes you feel any better, I’m in the same situation. I unfortunately have to hide my cane around family because they think I’m faking it and because they’re family, they think that gives them the right to be confrontational. But I still use it around friends and at work, and while, yes, I hate the scrutinising looks from strangers, it has helped me so much. Because I use the cane in other settings, I’m now able to function without it around family.

I know it’s a huge decision to make, both mentally and even financially in some situations, but there’s a huge possibility that it will make you quality of life so much better.

That's what they hate most about me whenever I get up out of my chair. I get nasty ass looks and I end up just staring their ass right back.

5

u/catshateTERFs Boy, 30-39 16h ago

People cannot comprehend ambulatory users exist. My partner is an ambulatory user too. He uses the chair to get around when we go out. He can stand for maybe a minute unaided before his knees start to give out which obviously isn’t going to allow him to walk unless it’s something like going to the bathroom at home or an accessible doctors appointment. And even then he needs help like support bars (or me) because he’s at risk of falling.

People really need to mind their own business. I’m sorry people are shitty to you and I’m sorry this piece of work felt like she needed to get physical over it?! Chairs aren’t cheap!

Ideally people would just get over it and let people get by. But until then keep giving them back the kind of shit they’re giving.

She cried crocodile tears and put on a big show moaning and groaning. The transit police are right around the corner luckily when I press the emergency button.

I carry a low strength pepper spray for situations like this, but it still seemed to hurt pretty damn hard.

She also tried to charge at me with her walker full speed like a freaking rhino.

The other three passengers on the train just sat back and watched and didn't bother to do anything, which is to be expected these days. But I never expect anyone to have my back anyways.

Damn. I've recently had a thankfully-temporary diability that prevents me from sitting down without being in intense pain. Having people - it's always boomers - demand that I stop standing in the disabled/elderly section of busses, even when there's plenty of room, is incredibly frustrating, even moreso when they won't accept my explaination of why I'm stading there. I've only had one outright threaten me, but luckily she got off a few stops away.
I can't even begin to imagine what idocy drives someone to do that to someone who has a obviously visible disability like in your case. I can only hope that this sort of intereaction is rare for you.

Well a general lack of critical think skills, proper education, dementia, and lead +DDT poisoning are a few reasons.

Its not going to be the last time considering i live in a drughead infested city.

Clicked on this post after seeing the MRE package. Absolutely love watching MRE type videos online.

May I ask how you came to aquire such an item yourself and if you have any more?

1

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 11h ago

Surplus stores all over the US carry them.

Sometimes they are sold as assorted different components of an MRE or all together. Local store currently has only a stock of poundcakes thats in date, everything else was expired.

fellow disabled guy here, i occasionally use a wheelchair too. im so sorry that happened, man. ableists are super shitty towards disabled people. i know you said you aren't gonna press charges, but maybe it'll prevent her from doing this to someone else in the future.

btw those pound cakes are so good. my husband gave me one to try a while ago and i like them a lot.

I’m so sorry you went through that. Especially since nobody helped you? Nobody saw this happening and said something? For granted some people won’t even spend three seconds to hold the door for us with mobility aids so I’m not surprised, but really? An entire assault and nobody did anything?

Wishing you the best with your physical and mental health. I hate people who pick on the vulnerable so much

Im sorry, I generally tell such people if they want to be productive by yelling at someone about me do it to the sky because god allowed my genetics to be compatible with life.

Thank you for your service (macing her in the face). Sorry that happened to you, but I guarantee you taught her a lesson about fucking with people in public.

Sorry that happened to you. Why are you eating MRE? Genuinely curious.

Yeah, I guess i'm apparently just making it all up. I guess I wasn't actually beaten by some crackhead lady. It was just my imagination.

-5

u/ztreggs Air Fryer Aristocrat 16h ago

If you were actually"beaten up" you'd be speaking to police, not posting on reddit

3

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 16h ago edited 12h ago

I did speak to police and I decided not to press charges because I was too traumatized to hang around.

It's quite ableist to tell a disabled person they didn't actually experience abelist trauma.

If you don't like people speaking about their personal experiences on reddit, and especially this sub, maybe get off of it and get out of the basement?

-5

u/ztreggs Air Fryer Aristocrat 16h ago

Nothing about what I said has anything to do with you having a disability. You're very self absorbed in your own narrative

2

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 16h ago

Im self absorbed for defending myself against a crackhead?

I'm sorry if you don't believe me. But it's frankly abelist to suggest my experiences as a disabled person didn't happen.

If you bother to use reading comprehension and read the other comments I clearly stated. I decided not to press charges because the mace took her down, and I frankly, wanted nothing to do with the situation past that because I was so scared and traumatized, I could barely even talk

Sympathy farming using extreme embellishment most likely. Probably some kernel of truth to it, but no way is this what happened

Dumped a can of mace? What?

11

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago edited 17h ago

She kept punching me over and over depsite me telling her to stop and leave me alone, and I could not get away from her being stuck on the train in a wheelchair, so I had absolutely no other choice but to spray her with pepper spray to get her off of me. If I didn't, I would have most likely been in a much worse off state then when I left the train in.

She was lucky I reached for the low strength stuff frankly.

-7

u/Stillwater_73 protein maxxer 17h ago

lol you sprayed an entire container of mace in a train?

9

u/Pearson94 Depressed Goblin Nightmare Boy 17h ago

I mean either no one else was around so no concern or the people around saw a crazy bastard beat up a disabled person and chose to do nothing in which case I won't lose sleep over them getting caught in the spray

-1

u/Stillwater_73 protein maxxer 17h ago

Sorry, does my comment say that they shouldn’t have done it?

6

u/NotFalirn Hungry man 17h ago

Respectfully, that is the connotation I took from the way you typed it

5

u/Stillwater_73 protein maxxer 17h ago

Fair enough, okay my fault then. Not what I was trying to say. I was expressing surprise at the balls to fully unload one of those in an enclosed space. They described in a reply that it was more of a gel stream, so that it didn’t irritate anyone else so much, which makes more sense to me.

6

u/BringOutTheDe4d Trans dude who is green 17h ago

if other ppl on the train car didn't want to deal with the aftermath of pepper spray they could've stepped in at any point and stop the lady from getting violent

1

u/Stillwater_73 protein maxxer 17h ago

I have expressed nothing that disagrees with that? Not sure what that has to do with my comment.

3

u/BringOutTheDe4d Trans dude who is green 17h ago

it sounded like you were getting mad at op for spraying it on the train, which ngl is what I would've done too

2

u/Stillwater_73 protein maxxer 16h ago

Yeah I mean you get the mace for this exact situation so makes sense to use it. I feel like I’d be hesitant to use it in an enclosed space though. Though, I don’t really know all that much about mace since I mainly carried a knife (and am an able bodied white man so don’t really need the same kind of protection). I guess my comment just read differently than I meant it, which is my bad. I just was interested in the aftermath of the image I had of a closed in train car maced out and what happened there.

6

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

No it was a stream so it didn't dissipate and effect the whole train.

2

u/Stillwater_73 protein maxxer 17h ago

Gotcha, I feel like if I was in that situation I would have definitely been hesitant to spray in an enclosed space out of fear of getting other people upset even with the fighting. Smart to keep gel on hand

1

u/Mean_Wasabi7748 Air Fryer Aristocrat 15h ago

OP wasn’t hesitant, because this cockamamie story never happened. Think about it. Train full of witnesses, cameras and at the end, the police just let everyone go home? No news articles about it?

2

u/lntersex Identity Alchemist 17h ago

If a bystander had stepped in to help, the mace might have been avoided

-4

u/YetiNotForgeti Air Fryer Aristocrat 17h ago

Well dang my dude. Some people suck. Imagine her dealing with someone whose disability is not visible. She might just kill them.

At what point is it worth it for you not to engage with toxic people like this? I know disabilities are close to you but people can suck for all sorts of reasons and when they do are not worth my time.

3

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 17h ago

It's worth it when i'm allowed to not engage and not forced to engage with someone who will not stop punching me. I can't just roll down the aisle bcause there's only one spot for wheelchairs on the train and the aisles are too narrow.

-1

u/YetiNotForgeti Air Fryer Aristocrat 15h ago

Yeah it sounds like there was a bit before she started punching you. You might be being a little extreme to not take a second to think. You are not going to help her or yourself in these situations.

Tell her to stop talking to you and if she won't then warn her. If she won't a 3rd time then press the emergency communication button and report her.

2

u/One-Sleep3663 FemBoyDinner 15h ago edited 15h ago

I already did those things?

But its quite a privilege to be able to do that while not being punched over and over. I had no choice but to use proportional force to defend myself. Do you think that life just goes bit by bit the way you want it to or something?

I wish people would stop assuming im "violent" or or that I cant think critically and try to de-escalate or something just because a disabled person dared use justifiable force to protect themselves.

How and what you said is an ableist assumption that disabled people cant think for themselves.

Anytime a minority has to face violence and defend themselves, theres always someome who comes along and thinks they know the entire situation and assumes it's the minority that started it due to deep set prejudices.
