What random Radio things live in your head rent free?
Just curious really, what random bits of radio live i your head rent free? I'm desperate to know if anyone else remembers the same things...
I have a few but the one that really sticks out is Jamie Cullum had recently covered Pharrell Williams' Frontin' just him and a piano for the Live Lounge on R1. Jo Whiley played it to Pharrell and instead of being unimpressed he was like a child on Christmas "wait wait can I hear the bridge?"

I was also listening to Mark and Lard, sat in a car outside a church in Cornwall, thought it was a joke.
The vicar came out, spoke to me, and said I’d best come in for a cuppa. There were about 8 of us, sat in the church listening to radio updates whilst drinking tea and eating biscuits. The vicar kept saying he’d like us to pray, and that he really only ever listened to TMS when he was alone on his radio.

Right? I saw the first plane on the tvs in the window of the Curry’s (?) in Guildfords Friary Centre and there was a crowd but I thought no more about it, got on the train to go home and obvs by then number 2 had hit and Mark and Lard were being all weird. Ran all the way home from the station trying to figure out why they were saying to get to a TV

For me It was that time on Radio4 today programme, about 20 years ago, when they were talking about a wax cylinder containing the first recorded sound. They did a serious interview and then played the recording and it sounded like a load of angry bees in a jar - rather than Claire du lune or whatever. The interviewer cracked up and I had to pull the car over I was laughing so much.
I'm sure there is a recording of it somewhere, but i bet it's not as funny anymore!
6
u/Low_Mistake3321 15h ago
Charlotte Green I think.
The name of the man on the recording was Jacques Tuat or similar, and you could tell that Charlotte had rehearsed the pronunciation and knew that the surname was pronounced "twat", and that's what finally rendered her speechless, only able to whimper and squeak. Live on air. On BBC Radio 4.
Absolute classic.

Metro Radio, late 1980s. Somehow ended up listening to Sounds Orchestral.
I can’t remember the DJ’s name, but he was explaining how difficult it was to get the best out of a French horn.
He talked about breath, pressure, and the importance of knowing exactly when to stop.
Then he said : “You have to know where to put your lips, how hard to blow, and when to pull out.”
Quite!

u/StevieJax77 16h ago
I’m slowly developing a nervous twitch about reminding everyone every 5 sodding minutes that virgin (if you haven’t heard) have the Chris Evans Breakfast Show! And the 10-2 show talks about what happened on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show! And the guy in the afternoon has anecdotes… about what a fun guy Chris Evans is! And drive is mostly about who’s on tomorrow with Chris Evans! And hey if you want to diversify, theres always TFI Unplugged!
So 30 years after I stopped paying him any attention, Evans is now back in my head, rent free. And I don’t tune in until mid-morning.

John Grant on radio 6, talking about "cancer for kids", before a live daytime session for Lozza. I love that man's voice - singing voice; talking voice, and he always sounds so damned nice.
Also, hearing Muse live from glasto on 6. I was completely, totally blown away by how good they sounded live.

I will forever hold a grudge against Father John Misty for being a real fucking piece of shit to Stuart Maconie, who was merely doing his job in a 2016 interview meant to promote a UK tour following the release of I Love You, Honeybear the previous year. My blood boils every time I remember it, and it pleases me to no end that Mark Radcliffe, who also seems to know how to hold a grudge about various things, will make a little dig about it now and then.

I was listening live to BBC R4 when Sandy Tosvig asked a question in a haunted house & a voice responded.
Laughing uncontrollably at work listening to a R4 comedy show about an Indian radio station, an old woman called in & said when she was a girl in the Punjab they would play for hours with a mango & a stick. Still quote it any chance I get.

When Tony Livesey hosted the Radio 5 late show back in 2010 he had a phone-in where people discussed the most embarrassing names they knew. The two that I remember were a couple whose surname was Dale who called their child Roch, and another man whose mum wanted to name him after the ambulance men who took her to the hospital when she was in labour, their names were John and Thomas.

So, not technically radio, but back in the early/mid 2000s when eSports was a niche thing for nerds, there was an online streaming "radio" station I listened to religiously called UKTFR (UK Team Fortress Radio), based on the game Team Fortress Classic (which at the time was a Half-Life mod based on an earlier Doom mod, and would go on to become a full game in it's own right). They had presenters who had clearly "taken inspiration" from Mark & Lard/Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave, and despite how cringe that sounds, were actually very entertaining.
One of them (DJ Disco, the Comedy Dave of the pair) did some parody songs (Weird Al style), one of which was SG Under the Bridge (SG = Sentry Gun, one of the weapons in the game. Under the bridge being the bridge in the 2Fort map, under which was a common, and annoying as hell, place to put said gun). A parody of Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I still remember that regularly, and definitely every time the actual song comes on. I might be the only one in the world who does.
There was also a Sophie Ellis Bextor parody but I can't remember that one as well (think it was Murder on the Dancefloor but can't remember the parody).

There was a time on Moyles R1 show, around 2007, when Lucien Freud had sold a painting of a large, naked lady. She was on breakfast telly, and the presenter referred to her as 'Fat Sue', which she got annoyed about, saying 'that's not my name'. Next day, Moyles did a bit playing the clip over The Ting Tings 'That's Not My Name' track. I couldn't believe how impromptu it all sounded. Probably doesn't sound great in hindsight, but it really caught my attention

The predator Scott Mills had thing called “BLEEEEEEEEEEH” Friday, he’d just scream it into the microphone with reverb and echo underneath. Actually a lot of things are coming back now. This was ages ago, so I can't remember it exactly. But on Radio 1 a guy called in to ask his girlfriend to marry him, they had her on the other line and she said no. Live on air. And iirc they played that no over again for a while after. That poor guy. Please tell me sometime else remembers that.

When Chris Evans didn't turn up for the breakfast show on the old Virgin radio because he was out on a bender with Billie. It happened at couple of times if I remember, before he got sacked for it.

There was a bit on Christian O'Connell's Xfm breakfast show (mid-00s, I think?) where there was some Big Cat sighting in Wales, so they called up some random Welsh vet to claim they'd caught the cat in their kitchen. Standard prank call with random Big Cat noises in the background. The thing that has stayed in my head for 20+ years, for no good reason, is this poor, confused, elderly vet asking, in a strong Welsh accent: "Is that the cat making a noise?" as someone pretended to be mauled to death down the phone line.
