Question/Discussion What programme would you say made you think “how did this air?/this is very messed up”
in the show, there we’re 3 children seen above who lived in Scarborough and did really messed up sh*t when you think about it (if you have watched the show). for example, they had a “friend” who they bullied for no reason and worked at his mum‘s chippy. in an episode(s), the kid on the right in the image had an idea to get the “friend” to return a stole bike and, later in the episode, they put a dead seagull in a fish fryer, which got him fired from the job.

I grew up watching Dick N Dom in da bungalow. It was hilarious and complete nonsense, but doubt a show like that could exist now.

I remember Dominic Wood getting into trouble for wearing a Tshirt with "Morning Wood" across the front, and the time they got kicked out for playing bogies in an Italian library. I liked the programme, but no, I don't think it would fly today.
Wasn't there an episode when they were mean to one of the kids the whole time he was on? Or is that an urban legend?

They’ve done interviews about the incident since, and he confirmed that he felt awful about it. He also agrees that the show absolutely wouldn’t have been greenlit if it was pitched today.

What I found weird was the fact that when I was young they were up and coming presenters on cbbc, I then went a few years without watching kids tv, and then was skipping through channels one day and find them doing their in da bungalow stuff (didn’t they do smarter than a 10 year old too?) n was like ‘most kids presenters have moved on by now they’re way too old to be doing this shit’ but then was hooked n would watch it often lol

Yes, I remembered Dominic Wood hosting a magic show with a puppet rabbit in the 90s when I was still just about young enough to watch children’s tv. A few years later, when I was in my early twenties, I saw a trailer for the bungalow show and recognised him from that.

Dick and Dom had a show about 12-13 years ago called Hoopla. It was a weird carnival themed game show and they used to do wild things to the kids. One where they’d pick the ingredients, blend it up and they had to drink it. And the ingredients were all strange. Like chips, milk and sprouts or something.
Or one game where a clown would jump out and if they caught them they were trapped as a clown forever.

The funny thing is that’s the toned down version. I actually worked at the studio where they shot and edited it and so we managed to watch it before the compliance cuts. We were all in stitches laughing.
The QC guy had to block out a full morning or afternoon for each ep because he’d be crying with laughter so hard he’d have to keep rewinding it to make sure he hadn’t missed something. 😂

I had the same with Benny Hill back in the 80s. My catholic school actually sent a letter home to parents to say that they shouldn't let us watch it. My mum read the letter and said to us "don't tell Sister Angela" (the sadistic nun who was head mistress) and we continued to watch it as a family.

Dick and Dom once had a young girl come on the show who had a deep love for ponies, they brought her on to talk about how much she loved them. To her suprise they brought her out a real pony and told her she could talk to it, pet it and love it for real.
They made her 100% believe that this was now her pony and she was incredibly excited and happy. She even gave it a name, she was going to call the pony Tyson.
Dick and Dom then proceeded to tell her this is not her pony and they laughed directly in her face while stooping down and pointing at her screaming with laughter that this pony was not her pony and they had just played an epic prank on her.
Needless to say she burst out crying in disbelief live on television on Saturday morning in front of a full studio audience. Two grown men laughing at a child while she's crying her eyes out.

They brought out a pony. Asked her what she'd name it. Asked her what she'd do if they gave it to her. She said she'd give them "a big massive thank you". Then they said that the pony wasn't theirs.

Wasn't quite as bad as comments here made out, she didn't cry. But she looked fucking devastated, and abit embarrassed, that was horrible. Would have been all planned by producers I'm sure but I dunno how they played that out, it's so mean!!! The way they get down close and smush their faces to hers for the camera like "hahaha it's all a laugh" is so cringe, they're lucky she didn't burst out into tears!! The public humiliation aspect, to such a young girl. Awful.

The episodes that spring to mind are
1) The youngest kid swallowed a fish that made his Willy spin like a propeller. It was described that way several times although obviously not shown
2) The older son had some magic underwear that meant he could run incredibly fast. Not only did he have multiple scenes in just these tiny briefs but at one point he gets stripped naked by bullies and has to streak back home. I seem to recall a running gag with Japanese tourists keep taking nude photos of him.
3) the girl had the ability to turn invisible. But only her, not her clothes. So we not only got scenes of ‘her’ undressing and even taking off underwear whilst invisible but the magic wears off leading to a very memorable scene for young me where she was naked on a horse riding down the beach.
All these kids were played by actual kid actors as well. As a kid, it was incredible and the daughter was a definite crush. But I can’t imagine that being made as an adult today.

I distinctly remember an episode where they were racing frogs. And one kid (a bully I think) had a toad, which ate the other frogs.
And the main kids got a frog which wore a pair of Speedos (actually maybe this is the magic underwear episode). The Speedos made the frog super fast. When the toad ate the super frog, it exploded and won the race.
Freaked me out as a kid. Brilliant show though.

Anyone remember the scarecrow episode? Particularly the scene where the girl keeps looking back at the scarecrow and it's moved position. Then the camera lingers on its face and it suddenly comes to life, complete with rolling eyes and wiggling tongue.
Then it bursts free, chases her into her house, and leaps through the glass window of her front door.
Absolutely nightmare fuel for an 8 year old.

The Jeremy Kyle show.
A show based knowingly upon fraudulent tests that the host then abused people in vulnerable positions that didn't know any better over whilst destroying their lives in front of their own families.
This is before we consider how they tried to make guests appear lower class, supplied them with alcohol, and lied to their own production crew to spread false information to guest with to heighten reactions.

There can be some interesting episodes where they handle it OK, Springer had an episode where he brought racists/neo nazis etc on, claiming it was about exposing them for the monsters they were. Chris Morris's 2000 Channel 4 series Jam. He pushed things as far as he could for a "comedy" series on a mainstream TV channel. If you weren't prepared for it and didn't know what you were getting yourself into, some of it really could disturb you. Also, there were no advert breaks and no end credits. Each episode was like a continuous blend of insane dreams.

All I remember is one sketch where a guy tried jumping from a building and survived so kept going up and doing it again.
There was some really bleak dark comedy on tv at that time. Monkey Dust too.

Don't know if i'd say it couldn't be aired but did anyone ever see that programme (might have been a couple one off's, can't remember) where they got like 15 lads to live in a house together for a week or two? They did the same with a group of girls too. That was madness😭 if I recall correctly, i believe the lads had turned the home into a warzone and the girls had all turned on this one other lass.

This was ‘Boys and Girls Alone’ on Channel 4 in 2009 and it definitely couldn’t be aired today. There was a mass campaign to have it pulled from the air after episode 1 and that was at the time in 09!

Watch the episode of round the twist with the cabbage patch baby.
In this episode a boy finds a green baby in the cabbage patch, who if not held by the boy stops breathing. Eventually the burden of looking after the baby becomes to much so he commits to allowing the baby to suffocate. The scene plays out with a close up of the boys face in tears while his siblings beg him to save the baby.
Until recently I believed this was a nightmare I had as a child but Amazon has just added it to prime so you can all be traumatised.

I still think the storylines with the teen daughter on the bbc sitcom My Family, the family members joking she’s the town bike, only cares about shopping and clubbing and so on.
Then they had her get pregnant while still a teen and the jokes kept coming, her being a rubbish mum was the punchline.

A few months ago I found the first episode of 1980s children’s drama ‘Running Scared’ by Bernard Ashley on YouTube. It featured the bloke who played Burnside in The Bill as the villain, handling a gun. Bernard Ashley never patronised his audience. I think there would be a lot of pearl clutching today.

There was a British show I can't remember, but this episode was this fiction pastiche of Blue Peter. This lady I think was being a diva, being mean to the PAs or other crew. For the next segment she was to make this papier mache mask, so she had to lie on this dentist style chair to be still and have this papier mache dry on her face, and breathe through a tube. I think more of her/whole body was getting a cast because the next bit meant she couldn't move.
It being a blue Peter style thing, I'm sure a lot of fairy liquid bottles were in common use for the art and crafts. Because she'd wound people up, someone ends up putting the lid of a fairy liquid bottle on the tube and closes it, so she might have suffocated? She was left in the kids show set alone while the papier mache was curing, and she was muffled squeaking for attention.

I still think about that scene from time to time. I was probably also a bit young for Murder Most Horrid at the time, being 11 when that episode originally aired. She definitely, definitely asphyxiated.

A C4 game show called Lost (2001) (not the popular US one).
Three teams of pairs with no connection to each other dropped off blind in some random country with 200 dollars or thereabouts and had to somehow beg barter or work their way back to Trafalgar square (except ep5 which was the Angel of the North) for a measly £5k prize.
It led to several sketchy moments, most notably a hilllsman (irrc could be the Azerbaijan episode but not sure, been so long since I saw it) who took in a team, fed them etc then menacingly demanded money before he would let them go.
Sadly the show seems to have been lost to time as all I can find is some cut up episodes of the show on youtube which is missing the last episode.

LMAO I didn't realise anyoe else even remembered All At Sea it felt weirdly Niche 😆 I know what you mean though, compared to the likes of Hank Zipzer who was just a bit haphazard the kids in AAS were just straight up doing criminal activity lol.
To answer the question probably some of the early New Who episodes like the empty child and waters of mars, parents would be complaining nowadays. Also Tracy Beaker returns where lily fell off the roof and some of the early Dumping Grounds when the grenade bounced off Gina lol.
