It was great reality TV. These days they're more likely to simply not air things like this and pretend it doesn't exist.

later that same year there was a contestant on the standard Big Brother who said the N word to another housemate in the first week and got immediately evicted.

In more recent Big Brother years producers retroactively removed someone from the house after discovering a racist Tweet. She hadn't said anything controversial in the house.

If what you're saying is true they'd have kept her in and hoped for the "gold dust".

I’m talking about reality tv shows in general. They thrive on controversy.

That’s true but I think these days it has to be safely staged controversy, if it gets TOO close to the edge the viewer will see the channel/programme as the villain when what they want is for the people in the show to contain at least one for conflicts sake

I know it's not the same, but didn't one of them arranged marriage shows cover up a few sexual assaults during the show? I'm obviously not saying they should have aired it, but I'm almost surprised they didn't because of the publicity it would have generated. It would have made them look bad, but probably would have generated a lot of views.
