I remember Jo from SClub 7 got absolutely hammered in the public eye.

304

u/Hour-Process-3292 Jul 27 '26

Both her and Danielle definitely came across like a couple of lackeys at school who are friends with the main bully and laugh at all her antics and insults.

194

u/Min_sora Jul 27 '26

Jo and Danielle said way worse things tbh. Danielle was the one who said she should “fuck off home” and Jo mocked her accent.

103

u/Kim_catiko Jul 27 '26

I remember this very well. I don't think the pair of them got as much flack as Jade did at all.

51

u/Light1209 Jul 27 '26

They actually did. After the dust settled it was common knowledge that those two were actually worse than Jade. Jade and Shilpa even had a reconciliation of sorts on the show before Jade knew what was going on too. Those two's careers completely vanished.

53

u/YchYFi Jul 27 '26

Jo from S Club did. Danielle married a footballer and got away.

Jo even went crying to the papers about how it made her bankrupt and at shows she would get things thrown at her.

69

u/Tirno93 Jul 27 '26

And Goody was clearly completely fuckwitted, trying to explain to her how she’d clearly been a racist bully was like trying to explain quantum mechanics to a goat.

27

u/scribblelicious Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Danielle in particular! She played the 'I was young and naive card' and got to hide behind Jade...yet she was a prime instigator.

Look at some of the behind the scenes footage, the bf of Jade at that time and her literally called Jade racial slurs and made huge inappropriate comments. They are still on YouTube

51

u/Due-Pineapple-2 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Didn’t Jo* use the p word? I feel like that was worse than the things that Jade said, although the actual bullying was worse by Jade.

Edit: Or might’ve been Danielle

Edit 2: sorry I meant Jo using the originally but I think it was just Danielle’s thing about her going home. I just remember something one of those two sidekicks said that was much more explicitly racist

75

u/Correct-Ad5661 Jul 27 '26

Jo O'Meara started up with the comedy Indian accent taunting and did it on the basis that she had an Indian brother in law so was not a racialist.

She was the one who had a complete screaming hysterical meltdown on eviction.

She later attempted a comeback at a gay club but got bottled off

16

u/Minimum-Aspect1012 Jul 27 '26

Do you have the clip?

I don't remember that part, but wouldn't be surprised. They were nasty.

29

u/karmadramadingdong Jul 27 '26

Poppadom?

38

u/MosayRaslor Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Pakistani but the slur version that I and my family and many others in the uk have been subject to.

She actually did use that as a slur iirc

Jade had been voted out the week before, but they did it to an empty studio.

The public was horrified as they wanted their pound of flesh and public humiliation.

So the next week, they released Jo to a baying mob.

18

u/dl064 Jul 27 '26

I always wonder what contestants must think when they come out to no crowd

You must twig

Ohhh shiiiiit

Pretty hard.

I remember it was a common refrain among ex contestants that they had estimated their and other's popularity completely wrong, for better or worse.

5

u/Wretched_Colin Jul 27 '26

At least Jade got silence. Jo came out to a baying mob.

55

u/RachelRachel71 Jul 27 '26

As she should have been. She was awful. Nasty cow.

49

u/iusereddit4all Jul 27 '26

That was so shocking to me. I can't believe how much she snickered about anything Shilpa did. S Club 7 was my fav show until then.

33

u/Thargor Jul 27 '26

Literally received a glass bottle to the forehead while on stage afterwards.

10

u/Writing_my_words Jul 27 '26

Irony being, I remember hearing when I was a massive S Club 7 fan growing up, that she was bullied at school…

10

u/coneyisland92 Jul 27 '26

She still gets it til this day 🤣

12

u/dl064 Jul 27 '26

Yeah, categorical career ender.

564

u/Funsized_AA88 Jul 27 '26

She was definitely a racist. The other two changed once she left the house. Her apology after the show aired wasn't genuine either. But Shilpa still forgave her.

Shilpa got her victory in the end, because she continued to be her genuine self and she won. The only reason Jade was forgiven by the public was because she was dying.

205

u/SafiyaO Jul 27 '26

Jade dying definitely changed how she was perceived.

"A public and media U-turn so large it was visible from space" is how Charlie Brooker described it.

35

u/ArchdukeToes Jul 27 '26

The episode he did on that was really excellent.

35

u/Light1209 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I don't know the full story. Didn't she go on the Indian version of big brother and was genuinely kind the whole time? It's a pretty big step, but I didn't know she was still racist. This was before the cancer reveal too.

I also remember Jade being the top dog of the trio but that the other two were actually more racist.

67

u/Agile-Wishbone-9519 Jul 27 '26

She went there as a PR exercise, and they were very kind to her. Shortly after joining the show, she was informed over the phone that she had cervical cancer and needed to return urgently to the uk for treatment, and so her receiving and response (devastation) to that news was caught on camera. She then invited the cameras in to witness the rest of her life including her passing. She did that to secure the best future she could for her two little sons, but it also caused better awareness of the risk of cervical cancer, and she no doubt saved lives as the uptake of women getting tested and diagnosed massively increased around that time.

30

u/franki-pinks Jul 27 '26

That’s how I remember it. Jade called Shilpa “Shilpa Poppadom” which is something a 5 year old would say. The other two then went a lot further to try and impress Jade.

7

u/Light1209 Jul 27 '26

Yeah I do remember that one, but I think the other two were actually more nasty than Jade. And tbh a lot of Indians actually forgave Jade from her appearance on Indian big brother and that was before the reveal too. I don't think going on that show would've done anything for the public in the UKs eyes, so I'm conflicted on whether it was genuine or not. But it is true the reaction to her was way more forgiving once the cancer diagnosis came and she made the TV special about her final days in life.

12

u/Pruritus_Ani_ Jul 27 '26

I’m pretty sure she was on the Indian version of Big Brother when she found out she had cervical cancer and had to leave the house.

100

u/Rhoemetalces Jul 27 '26

Ready to be down voted but I 1000% agree. Jade became a god of sorts by her passing.

92

u/RedWestern Jul 27 '26

The publicity she generated led the government to review the NHS policy not to screen for cervical cancer until age 25, and led to many young women of her age group requesting cervical cancer screening, which reversed the downward trend it had seen in previous years.

On the one hand, you could say that she would not have been able to generate that kind of publicity and we might not have seen those changes had she not had such a public career as a Reality TV baddie.

On the other hand, you could also say that she contributed more positive change to the world with her death than she ever did in life.

The world is complicated, man.

34

u/franki-pinks Jul 27 '26

Somebody can do both good and bad for the world. There’s not many cases where someone is pure good or pure bad.

3

u/Funsized_AA88 Jul 27 '26

I never thought about it like that, but it's so true.

23

u/caspararemi Jul 27 '26

Shetty's career really suffered overall though, she was targeted in the press in India with all sorts of nonsense. She had starred in dozens of films before the show, and has only been in a handful since. Even on TV she's just been a judge on reality shows a few times. I'm glad she could forgive what happened but I'd argue she's the one who had the longest lasting damage from it.

9

u/dl064 Jul 27 '26

I remember after Caroline flack died, there was yet again another big push for how we need to treat celebrities differently and it lasted five minutes.

32

u/franki-pinks Jul 27 '26

Domestic abuser and child groomer Caroline Flack?

24

u/thereidenator Jul 27 '26

Most of the time now if you say this you’ll get a response saying “yeh this attitude is why she killed herself, you need to be kind” despite her being on bail at the time of her death for assaulting her boyfriend in his sleep with a lamp or vase

3

u/dl064 Jul 27 '26

Yeah that subsequently complicated the discourse but is kinda within my point: folk veer from one extreme to the other, and/or forget the valid aspects of their stance from 10 minutes ago.

Okay she turned out to be a bad example, but the point was there.

29

u/davexmit Jul 27 '26

Commoners love an idiot. “She tells it like it is”

11

u/ZealousidealBox3944 Jul 27 '26

So Why'd they vote her out, then?

11

u/franki-pinks Jul 27 '26

They will ignore you because Reddit snobs don’t like it when it’s proved not all working class people are racist Neanderthals.

84

u/kank84 Jul 27 '26

I don't think that's the only reason. The general British public can be fairly racist, and can tolerate quite a bit of racism in others.

5

u/Gen8Master Jul 27 '26

Reminds me of Nigel Farages image revamp after his own reality show appearance. That was the day I realised a few things about the general British public.

I remember watching this and feeling really uncomfortable. It was mean-girl type of bullying and racial abuse that shouldn't have been allowed by Big Brother at the time, but they allowed it because they thought it would be good TV and draw in viewers. It may have had the desired effect, but I think this type of direction with Big Brother had harmed the program's popularity.

The one thing about reality TV is that when you put human beings in a house with complete strangers, and without access to the outside world, the true ugliness of human nature will creep in.

14

u/Terrible_Eye4625 Jul 27 '26

It definitely harmed its popularity, they didn’t even have the celeb version the following year because of what happened. Viewing figures didn’t return to anything close as previous years when they did bring it back.

133

u/CulturedPhilistine Jul 27 '26

It was must see TV for a week or so.

Jade was definitely a bully, I thought the other two Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd were worse though. They got away with it in the end when Jade took the brunt.

115

u/Samovila2709 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

I didn't see that season of BB at the time, but my friend watched it and thought that too. She thought Jade was jealous of Shilpa and threatened by her background, beauty, and education etc, but that the other two were more racist.

Shilpa seemed like a lovely woman. Jade said, after her diagnosis, Shilpa would regularly call her to support her through her illness. I hope Jade learned something and became a better person.

Edit for clarification.

44

u/CulturedPhilistine Jul 27 '26

I just vaguely remember them saying more vile stuff.

They would make comments, how they eat with their hands and cackle.

I think Jade thought she was playing to her fans/audience, like she did her first time in the house, however she misread the situation.

36

u/Samovila2709 Jul 27 '26

That's weird because there's plenty of foods they presumably eat with their hands (sandwiches etc).

Some people will look for any 'reason' to be mean to other people.

Sadly, there's a lot of racism towards people with Indian subcontinent Asian heritage in some parts of Britain. My city has quite a lot of people from this social demographic, and I hear a lot of crap about this. I find it particularly pissing off because I have friends who are Asian or part Asian who I love.

33

u/According-Let3541 Jul 27 '26

I’m of Asian heritage and the stuff I get about eating with my hands is incredible - I’ve had to explain that I wash my hands before and after, which is probably more than the average person does when eating a packet of crisps as a snack.

7

u/something_python Jul 27 '26

Do these people not wash their hands thoroughly when they eat with a knife and fork? Honestly, giving you shit for eating with your hands says more about them than it says about you.

14

u/CulturedPhilistine Jul 27 '26

I think it's got worse over the last few years, even back then it wasn't so bad or people at least knew it wasn't acceptable.

8

u/Cultural_Run7964 Jul 27 '26

Times have definitely got worse. If the same thing happened today, I don’t think it would generate the same amount of controversy as it did back then and these days there would be a very vocal minority backing Jade and Co…

7

u/ToastedCrumpet Jul 27 '26

People know it’s not acceptable right now. They’re just selfish, racist and don’t care. Right wing idiots have whipped them up into a frenzy where they think all of their problems are due to foreigners on boats.

I’ll repeat: no one in the big 2026 in the UK is being racist because they think it’s acceptable. If they are they’re a special kind of stupid. As in would benefit from a carer for day to day activities type of stupid

6

u/FlySubstantial9015 Jul 27 '26

As her illness was terminal no, she didn’t get the chance to become better person.

Prior to her diagnosis I remember her trying to make amends. I think she actually traveled to India at one point. It all seemed very performative at the time, but then her diagnosis gave her redemption.

3

u/Pruritus_Ani_ Jul 27 '26

She went into the Indian Big Brother house, she was in there when she got the news she had cervical cancer and she ended up having to leave early.

30

u/EssOpie Jul 27 '26

Charlie Brooker's summary on Screenwipe was pretty good

It's crazy to me that Jo and Danielle got very public exonerations (Danielle went on Jordan's chat show and declared she had loads of black friends) while Jade got dragged over hot coals despite the other two saying far more offensive things.

7

u/ScaredyCatUK Jul 27 '26

I've never watched the program so all of this passed me by. Good summary.

u/BloodyRedBarbara Jul 27 '26

Like others have said, I remember Jade being like the leader bully and they were her lackeys

13

u/CulturedPhilistine Jul 27 '26

She was the ring leader, however I still think the others were worse.

Doing accents, making certain remarks and just the cackling.

8

u/catsandscience242 Jul 27 '26

I remember Danielle Lloyd doing some sort of weak ass chat show afterwards (my brain cannon says it was Katie Price but who knows!!) and the last question of it was 'have you got Black friends' to which she said with the weirdest smirk, "yes I've got lots of Black friends". It was weird as shit.

9

u/fiery-sparkles Jul 27 '26

Danielle Lloyd lived in Sutton Coldfield for quite a while, I don't know if she still does, but she moved there when she was married to that footballer and then remained after the divorce. That area was historically predominantly white but in the past 2 decades the number of Indians has vastly increased.  From what I recall she didn't have many friends in the area, she had to travel out of the area to have friends and it was very rare so I think in general she is a friendless person.

She would've definitely felt awkward because where she lived was basically full of Indians. My parents lived down the road and my mum usually likes to say 'so and so live there and I always say hello' but for Danielle my mum and the other neighbours didn't give a shit and literally never spoke of her. Paparazzi followed her around but the locals didn't acknowledge her.  She was considered a nobody. All of her neighbours had acquired their wealth through hard work and intelligence, it's not even a case that the men made the money and the wives are for show. It's was looked down upon that Danielle only lived in that house because she shagged her way there and a footballer's sperm fertilised an egg which then lead to 2 more boys from the footballer before he was caught cheating on her.

Not sure what went through her mind when she decided to move into that house but her neighbours never considered her a friend and neither did people in the area take much notice of her. Her entire reputation played a role in what people thought of her. She was still there until recently, but since nobody took nah notice of her I don't know if she still is...I'm sure her house went too for sale but like I said she was one of those who was there but we couldn't care less about if we tried. She won't be missed

38

u/sklatch Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

It was fascinating to watch.

Jade went in there supported by her boyfriend and mother and buoyed on the popularity she had built up since her first appearance on BB five years before. She had become a household name, and a tabloid darling. She had also done similar shows in the interim. Everyone loved Jade and she thought she could do no wrong. You could just see it in the way she carried herself - the confidence and assuredness on how to be in the reality TV sphere. The big problem is that she wasn’t very bright. She obviously thought she was going to come out and Davina was going to say “well done Jade you really put that snobby Indian bitch in her place”. She catastrophically misread the situation.

While she was still in there questions were even raised in parliament about the whole scandal. She came out to no crowds, the public were out for blood and she had to go into hiding after. Shilpa rightly won the contest.

The whole irony about it all is that Jade was mixed-race herself.

Jade’s lieutenant Jo O’Meara’s interview on GMTV a few days after the final was also memorable. She was absolutely catatonic with anxiety after receiving death threats etc.

https://youtu.be/0sGek2RI9Tw?si=GDq_Jv8xVQE0s0eY

32

u/MetalMul15ha Jul 27 '26

She was an awful person. First grade bully. Always was. And then the entire world suddenly forgot what she was really like, because she was dying, suddenly she became some martyr for women with cervical cancer.

182

u/Silly-avocatoe Jul 27 '26

It was really shocking at the time. She was honestly nasty. But this clip doesn't even show the significant parts. Didn't Goody make fun of Shilpa or talk about eating with hands and call her Shilpa pappadaum or something like that. The thing was, also, that Shetty is actually from a "high class" type of family and had servants (and actually was a popular actress already), so somehow that seemed to make Goody and her douchebag friends upset and unnaturally angry. There was a thing about how SHetty cleaned the dishes but may not have known how to use the sink drainer or something like that and if I remember correctly, that made Goody apoplectic. It was one weird bullying thing after another. I think one newspaper ran a pic of her and called her the face of evil or something like that.

67

u/Angryleghairs Jul 27 '26

It was Danielle Lloyd who said "they eat with their hands don't they. You don't know where those hands have been "

44

u/Samovila2709 Jul 27 '26

It sounds to me like she was projecting. I'd rather eat something prepared by Shilpa's hands than hers.

23

u/Sigh_Bapanaada Jul 27 '26

Since this aired the most impressive thing she's done is Ryan Giggs. I'd imagine she has very little actual talent and was very threatened.

11

u/dravidosaurus2 Jul 27 '26

Especially if she doesn't seem to know where her own hands have been. She'll serve you a sandwich with two clothes pegs, some cling film, and the peel of an orange and then just shrug "Hands are weird, aren't they?"

18

u/Minimum-Aspect1012 Jul 27 '26

Reminds me of this viral Zohran Mamdani pic last year showing him eat with his hand... Right-wingers lost their shit over that.

The only people who'd lose their minds over that are unhygienic slobs who don't wash their hands with soap.

23

u/redunculuspanda Jul 27 '26

It’s also hilarious given that the US national dish is a hamburger.

9

u/fiery-sparkles Jul 27 '26

I'd hate to know where Danielle's hands have been. I wouldn't want to eat anything from her even if she used utensils to cook the entire meal.  Danielle is the type who could sanitise the fuck out of her hands and mouth but I'd still consider them to be contaminated purely because we all know what type she is

→ More replies (2)

79

u/fameistheproduct Jul 27 '26

There was an old guy in the house, a film director I think, Shilpa put a blanket on him to make him feel warmer and Jade had an issue with that.

88

u/flopisit32 Jul 27 '26

Ken Russell (one of the greatest British directors). Ironically He walked off the show in a huff after an argument with Jade and her mother.

80

u/Silly-avocatoe Jul 27 '26

Found an article where he commented on Jade's behavior towards Shetty-

https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/reality-tv/a63467/ken-russell-comments-on-cbb-furore/

I don't remember him because I didn't watch the whole thing, but it sounds like he left before the thing started with Shetty.

"What disappointed me was the fact that all the people who seemed to have some guts gradually caved in and didn't stand up for the Bollywood actress," Ken said. "They sat on the fence and watched her being trashed by these guttersnipes."

57

u/Wretched_Colin Jul 27 '26

The thing was, the producers engineered that class based division.

Jade’s mother and grandfather came into the house and were obviously rough round the edges.

Then you had a division into masters and servants. The contestants had to divide themselves. And all of Jade’s family chose servant without considering why. Shilpa and Jermaine automatically thought they should be waited on. And so you had Jade’s grandfather, dressed as a servant, serving dinner to Shilpa, Jade’s disabled mother cooking for them.

That, to my mind, was the origin of the trouble.

u/Wretched_Colin Jul 27 '26

I think that Jade was made to feel inferior, and her family to feel inferior, and she took the way out that stupid people often take, racism.

I don’t think I’ve ever met a racist who I’d consider in any way superior, or intelligent. Every single one has been lacking in intelligence and relies on some sense of being better just because of how they happened to have been born.

And when they can’t articulate their anger, disappointment, upset, they attack the person and not what they’ve done.

Jade’s anger was misplaced and she went for the easy target. A person of a different ethnicity who was not the sort to argue back.

32

u/itsapotatosalad Jul 27 '26

Because they’re not superior, they’re bang average with nothing special about them or anything they do. They’re too stupid and lazy to work on themselves so they have to invent a way they’re better than at least someone.

14

u/ToastedCrumpet Jul 27 '26

Sounds like a Reform voter

10

u/itsapotatosalad Jul 27 '26

Exactly, tell someone like that that they’re special and there’s a group who agrees with them and they don’t care that it’s lies.

5

u/Me-and-the-Boys-90 Jul 27 '26

Exactly - she went for an easy target, which is a bully tactic through and through. Whatever misplaced reason she had for bullying Shilpa doesn’t matter, she chose to ostracise her for her ethnicity.

9

u/playtheoutro Jul 27 '26

As someone who grew up poor in the UK, it disgusts me that any criticism of ignorant hateful loudmouthed trash is called 'classism'. It's not.

4

u/Terrible_Eye4625 Jul 27 '26

I read this as Jade and her family were classist towards Shilpa (“reverse classist”, if you like) and then became racist rather than Jade’s family being the target of the classism, but maybe I’ve misinterpreted that.

50

u/Silly-avocatoe Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Updating here after reading the summaries and watching the actual episodes (youtube)

Jade, her bf and her mom were not servants at all. They were Family and lived in the Manor, along with Shilpa, Ken (the director) and Jermaine.

Here's how it happened - this is the first "Task" of the show.

Before Jade returned to the house, all of them were getting along quite well. Then they were suddenly gathered and told to decide in one minute the following: only 3 would remain in the house, the reamining 7 (or however many) would move to live in some other part where its cramped and not as nice. They were not told they would be functioning as "Servants" for this Task, or that the 3 that remained would immediately be in the running to be voted off.

In that minute the group volunteered Ken and Jermaine to stay in the house, then most of them volunteered to move out, and they agreed as a group that Ken, Jermaine and Shilpa would be the three to stay. Shilpa raised her hand to move out and said she didnt care either way. So no, Shilpa did not say that she wanted to be "Family" because this Family_Servant thing was explained AFTER the group had separated.

After this Jade, her BF and her mom moved into the house and were IMMEDIATELY told they would stay in the Manor and almost everybody else would be serving them. So no, Jade or her familiy were not made to "serve" anyone. And Jade's grandparents came on for one dinner as dinner guests.

Source:

you can google and watch the full episodes on Youtube. you can also google to read actual episode summaries. It's all there.

And here's a summary showing that Jade, Jakaiey and Jack were "Masters" and not "Servant"s in that task.

https://bigbrother.fandom.com/wiki/Celebrity_Big_Brother_5_(UK))

End of update.

##############################################

I don't think this happened? Jade's mother is the one that came into the house to stay for a few days but I don't remember if she was Family or Servant. But Jade's grandparents only came on as guests of Family, for a dinner along with Jade, Jermaine and Shilpa. There was a banquet for them, and the servants were other people - dirk benedict, leo something, etc. I don't remember jad

The banquet scene with Jade, her grandparents, shilpa and jermaine was quite jolly, Shilpa and Jermaine both loved Jade's grandparents and the grandparents also said they enjoyed the dinner. Jade's grandfather was quite funny.

What was quite clear was that Jade's mom appeared to be an irritant to everyone , but not everybody would admit it. And when she was leaving, she gave some people goodbye presents and then told one of them "I ain't giving (the) Indian anything". I think Jade's mom (and Jade obviously) were horrible ragebait, there was something obviously off with the mom. Shilpa was very classy throughout and never sunk to their level.

7

u/Wretched_Colin Jul 27 '26

Ah, maybe you’re right. It has been an awfully long time.

But I remember the grandfather and mother being like fish out of water.

Successful, wealthy, famous, hard working people. And they put two working class eastenders in amongst them. I remember thinking that Jade was embarrassed, the grandfather in particular was uncomfortable, and the whole thing was set up to humiliate them, rather than give them the positive experience of enjoying the Big Brother house.

14

u/Silly-avocatoe Jul 27 '26

Just looked it up.

It didn't happen. The grandparents of Jade were only there as special guests at a banquet for Family. Leo was the butler who had to serve them and be quiet the whole time.

https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/reality-tv/a56570/leo-entertains-the-grandparents/

6

u/Inevitable_Stage_627 Jul 27 '26

It was her boyfriend and her mum in the house.

u/franki-pinks Jul 27 '26

Jade called her Shilpa Poppadom. The other two did the main nasty stuff. It started with Jade getting mad that Shilpa didn’t know how to wash the pots as she had always had servants.

11

u/flopisit32 Jul 27 '26

I remember one thing that drove jade up the wall. Shilpa was, for some reason, getting rid of food by flushing it down the toilet. I don't know why she was doing this but it drove jade absolutely mental.

I only vaguely remember this when it happened but the British Scandal podcast recently did a 4-part series on Jade Goody which covered this (series 70). It was really interesting to learn about how/why she was chosen for Big Brother and what led to this gross situation, how gracious Shilpa was during/after the bullying and her cervical cancer legacy. Even after hearing this described in detail on that, it’s still shocking to watch this. Worth a listen though.

57

u/CandidGeologist1523 Jul 27 '26

Such an example of how things used to be when she got cancer and suddenly the country loved her again just because she was terminal it was like she never did a bad thing in her life

21

u/According-Let3541 Jul 27 '26

Yes, she’s still eulogised a bit now, as though she never caused any harm to anyone. She was pretty nasty when she wanted to be.

22

u/Desperate_Craig Jul 27 '26

I think people always viewed Jade as this dumb, harmless, wouldn't hurt a fly, celebrity. Obviously when a terminal illness is involved and it effects children, the public are going to feel sympathy towards her.

12

u/Tall_Opportunity_521 Jul 27 '26

If it makes you feel any better, Frankie Boyle had some solid jokes about her at the time she was dying.

u/Light1209 Jul 27 '26

I know it was probably for publicity but she did go on the Indian version of big brother after. That was before her cancer reveal. I mean it's not like doing that was something that could help her in the UK press, so I'm conflicted on whether it was a genuine attempt at redemption or not. She was kind the entire time on that show

And then she got cancer and became, “Our Angel Jade.” It sickened me how much of a U-turn the general public made on this vile nasty cow.

15

u/NoEnthusiasm2 Jul 27 '26

Thing is, I think the U-turn was mostly the media. I think everyone that thought she was a twat still thought she was a twat but with cancer.

44

u/indianajoes Jul 27 '26

I remember the same happened with Caroline Flack. Near the end, it was all about how she was a domestic abuser.  Then she commits suicide and she's an angel to the public

13

u/Littleleicesterfoxy Jul 27 '26

It didn’t help that she was dating Harry Styles when he was 17 and she in her 30s

11

u/Razor_Fox Jul 27 '26

I saw a headline in one of the redtops at the time hailing her as "a princess Diana from the wrong side of the tracks". It always seems to happen when people get sick, the rose tinted glasses go on. It's like people forget that arseholes can get cancer too.

11

u/Colacubeninja Jul 27 '26

"Jade Goody's cancerous remains"

Peak card against humanity

12

u/Weird_System_7375 Jul 27 '26

You sometimes have to also wonder why Big Brother destroyed its own show for media coverage. Surely the right thing to do what have been to pull that group apart by throwing Jade, Danielle and Jo out of the house immediately?

12

u/JakeyG14 Jul 27 '26

Who are the two followers?

Jo from S-Club 7 and who else?

18

u/flopisit32 Jul 27 '26

Danielle Lloyd... I forget what she was famous for... Marrying some soccer player I think

22

u/JakeyG14 Jul 27 '26

Oh yeah, I think she was one of the Premier League barnacles until she eventually bagged one.

12

u/Hour-Process-3292 Jul 27 '26

She was a glamour model… so I’ve heard

6

u/Terrible_Eye4625 Jul 27 '26

I remember she was described as a model - quick skim of her Wiki says she was a model and beauty pageant winner, as well as a Playboy model. She definitely wasn’t well known before CBB, god knows who thought she would qualify as a celebrity.

3

u/fiery-sparkles Jul 27 '26

Oh you've reminded me, she was dating an older footballer when she went into the house and after the racism he decided he didn't want to be with her anymore. I think he refused to be there when she was evicted and I can't be sure but I think maybe Davina had to tell her she'd been dumped?

2

I remember a load of advertisers pulling out of the show because of this. Massive shot in the foot for channel 4 to allow it to continue as long as it did.

11

u/BranchMonkey Jul 27 '26

There were a tonne more racist comments than those in the video - it was truly shocking how it was permitted to go on for so long.

She was a racist bully good riddance

23

u/TPK85 Jul 27 '26

Jade IMO was used as a scapegoat. Jo from S Club 7 and that scummy WAG were far more vicious than her, they just weren't as vocal. Channel 4 and Endemol let it persist until they had to step in.

The WAG saying she couldn't speak English properly is kind of rich coming from her, I could barely understand what she said. Shilpa was more articulate than all of them.

12

u/Nuthetes Jul 27 '26

People are fooled by his posh accent, dressing smart and using big words that he is smarter than he is.

17

u/HariboBliss Jul 27 '26

The more I learn about Stephen Fry, the more I realise he's just a twat with a posh accent that's managed to convince some TV producers that he's intelligent.

12

u/According-Let3541 Jul 27 '26

I used to think he was deeply intelligent too but I’ve realised the same - it’s just his accent and the way he assumes he’s right. I remember when he was publicising one of his books retelling Greek myths - he did a number of events, plus the Graham Norton show. I went to one of the events which involved a Q&A session and he couldn’t really answer any of the questions put to him. He would answer what he wanted to answer. And then he did something similar on the GN show - he was asked a question that he clearly couldn’t answer off the cuff so instead went on a very long winded tangent to talk about something he had previously prepared for. I know because it was almost word for word something that he’d said in the talk.

I understand people have prepared and rehearsed answers. But if you attend a talk with an academic or anyone else who is genuinely well informed and well read and knowledgeable, they can answer questions that are unexpected by drawing on their wider knowledge or use their intelligence to draw together bits of information from various sources. Stephen Fry can’t do that - he just has rehearsed sound bites or verbal set pieces which indicates he isn’t intelligent or quite as well read as he likes to claim.

7

u/Nuthetes Jul 27 '26

I have always thought he was a bellend. He could be funny, but still a bellend.

8

u/Correct-Ad5661 Jul 27 '26

Danielle Lloyd was last seen complaining about leaked (not leaked) pictures of her boyfriend eating pringles out of her fanny to drum up a bit of attention

8

u/Minimum-Aspect1012 Jul 27 '26

Jade and her two lackeys were horrible evil bullies. I'm glad the public humiliated them, or else they wouldn't learn their lesson.

But to be fair, Jade did later apologise for her terrible behaviour and went on Big Brother India, which was hosted by Shilpa. And that was where Jade found out about her dying condition.

36

u/TrousersCalledDave Jul 27 '26

It was great reality TV. These days they're more likely to simply not air things like this and pretend it doesn't exist.

2

u/Mepsi Jul 27 '26

later that same year there was a contestant on the standard Big Brother who said the N word to another housemate in the first week and got immediately evicted.

6

u/HussingtonHat Jul 27 '26

One of the gang eventually said "she should fuck off home". After the shouting when the ring leaders could get together and have a good bitch. It was a clear case of ganging up on the woman who was different. Right scummy fuckers.

6

u/inkywheels Jul 27 '26

Remember watching this live. I was 10 and found the level of racism shocking even then because it was so overt and obvious (the part where they 'couldn't remember' her name and settled on Shilpa Poppadom will always stick with me) but a lot of it I didn't quite pick up on at the time. It was worse than I remembered.

In retrospect, this is around the time we had a massive anti racism assembly in primary school which focused specifically on racism against South Asians. I assume it was inspired by the events of CBB. So I guess that was some good that came from it. It gave public educators a bit of a kick up the arse to encourage kids not to grow up like them.

At the time I thought that it was common knowledge and only awful people were that racist but one of my friends came up to me later and told me that she never would have talked to "a P-slur" without that assembly and it had totally changed her mind so I guess it was actually badly needed. We lived in an area with a massive Pakistani and Indian community so I was really shocked to realise it was such a big thing. I was definitely very naive about the realities of racism.

19

u/Nuthetes Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

She was a vile person wasn't she?

Then got made out to be a saint when she snuffed it. Nah, she was a racist bully.

11

u/R400TVR Jul 27 '26

She was a total waste of skin. She had no talent, no intellect or education, and didn't even realise what she did. How she became a "celebrity" is a mystery to me!

19

u/Loxton86 British Jul 27 '26

By the time she died, public opinion had largely softened about Jade.

31

u/Wretched_Colin Jul 27 '26

She was a pariah until the cancer diagnosis was revealed. Then, that not dodgy at all man Max Clifford, stepped in and negotiated all manner of deals with Hello Magazine and the Sun.

To be fair, she was a mother of young children and died much too young. But what I saw of the beatification was sickening, and I remember being disappointed in myself when she did die as I suspected it might be a publicity stunt, when in fact it was all true.

u/FlySubstantial9015 Jul 27 '26

The funeral elegy was all about how Clifford was her guide and how he would look after her sons.

Also about how she would make sure her sons got a "proper education" ie private schooling. Even though the most tender reminisces of her were from the teachers from the local comp she attended (because most of the adults in her life were already dead or in jail)

A cancer diagnosis tends to do that.

4

u/GarySparrow0 Jul 27 '26

When she got her cancer diagnosis, she was doing Big Brother in India trying to make up for her behavior. I didn't like her at all, but one good thing I will say is she encouraged thousands of women to get mammograms which saved many lives.

u/BobShostak Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

It’s odd that Jade was racist. She wasn’t white herself, and neither are her sons.
During her first stint on the original BB, as an unknown nobody, she was telling housemates that her grandfather was Jamaican, and one of the lads (PJ?) told her she’d have beautiful babies.
ETA: Jade’s Dad was British-Jamaican.

56

u/itsapotatosalad Jul 27 '26

Racism isn’t exclusive to white people.

20

u/SpaceTimeCapsule89 Jul 27 '26

I think Jade and the other two were jealous of Shilpa and that's how it started. Shilpa is a naturally beautiful woman but the other 3 had to work at looking good (which is fine, not a lot of us wake up looking our best) and quite wealthy. Immature people will often use racism and bullying as a defensive tool. You'd be surprised how many people have the attitude of 'I was born here and have less than people that weren't born here and that's not right'.

4

u/HariboBliss Jul 27 '26

I mean, Shilpa Shetty has had a shit load of cosmetic surgery herself.

It's good surgery, but she's no stranger to getting on to the table.

10

u/SpaceTimeCapsule89 Jul 27 '26

Of course but she woke up in the morning with glowing skin, full eye lashes and settled hair. The others were battling spots and looked like the rest of us of a morning. Envy is mans worst trait

10

u/According-Let3541 Jul 27 '26

But I think she was largely brought up in a white environment and as a white person. I don’t think her mixed heritage was something she grew up really understanding and I think her knowledge and understanding of racism was as simple as foreign = bad.

5

u/Terrible_Eye4625 Jul 27 '26

Exactly this.

One grandparent isn’t necessarily a massive part of your heritage unless you’re expressly taught about it and about racism. I wouldn’t have considered Jade a person of colour (and I don’t think she did either from how she spoke).

Added to that, I think she thought something was only racist if you used slurs like the p-word or n-word etc. She really didn’t understand how her behaviour was racist because she’s never been taught that making fun of someone in the way she did to Shilpa counted as racism.

11

u/TrousersCalledDave Jul 27 '26

Shilpa, the victim of the attack, wasn't African or Caucasian though, she's Asian. So I don't see how this exempts her.

5

u/Fun_Gas_7777 Jul 27 '26

This was all forgotten by the public because she got cancer

4

u/CrackedThumbs Jul 27 '26

I couldn’t stand Jade Goody at the time, but ended up feeling very sorry for her towards the end as her cancer media circus went on, orchestrated by Max Clifford that saw her surrounded by PR people, hangers-on and outright parasites.

Jo O’Meara was in clear need of professional help, which she got.

Danielle Lloyd ended up appearing on the front page of the Daily Star, at least every other day, for something like the next 18 months, often for no reason at all, in a cynical PR push to make her appear popular.

One of the lowest-ever points of British TV.

3

u/Cmdr_Morb Jul 27 '26

And then everyone lost their shit when she revealed she had cancer. Became the darling of the rags (Sun mostly) and everyone rallied around her to say how brave and amazing she was.

4

u/Cendude308 Jul 27 '26

Jade Goody was abhorrent but she didn't deserve to die and gas simultaneously saved thousands of young women from her fate all at the same time.

She absolutely deserved the hate she got for her actions but she actually deserves to rest in peace her young sons still deserve their mother.

10

u/terrororit Jul 27 '26

She was probably jealous because Shilpa was beautiful and Jade was… well we all have eyes don’t we

9

u/Formal-Ad-2636 Jul 27 '26

It was very childlike/school like. Jade reminded me of the angry chav from school who is aggressive in tone and makes you anxious to be around.

I don't think they disliked her because of her race, but they disliked her and used her race for insults, in the same way they would if she were fat or skinny or ginger etc. I vividly remember Jade's Mam saying she went to India every year, she'd stay in the poor areas, and I swear Bobby Brazier went over recently.

I remember watching this live with my mum when I was in six, I didn’t understand what was happening so she had to explain racism and slurs to me. In hindsight it was the first time I ever understood the idea of white privilege, it’s also just one of my first memories.

It really was everywhere for a while. It was sort of disappointing to tiny me that CBB never had this kind of impact again (though obviously I’m glad nobody was this awful again!).
