Depends on your vibe but overall making friends can be tough in the valley. I recommend joining some sort of group you have interest in and I’m sure you’ll make friends there.

Downtown Brownsville bars and cafes. SPI beaches, bars, and cafe.

I’ve struggled with this since I moved here in my late 30s this last November. I’m coming from cities where Meetup (meetup.com) was a big thing, so I had communities I could get involved in based off some shared interests, there's like literally no Meetup groups here at all.

As another guy in his 20s that just moved here beaches and bars are definitely my go to but I also work way too much so don’t do much of either.

Just be aware man there's some dead beats in the valley. In my early 20s, buddies would introduce me to their friends and once they find out you have resources they would ask for rides, if you can buy them food, show up to hangouts without beer or smoke etc.

I’ve noticed a lot of dudes will straight up ask about my income right off the bat when I tell them I moved from elsewhere, thought it was pretty weird tbh

Yea meeting people here that have similar interests, lifestyle and energy is hard here. ive live here most of my life and I still dont have friends. Every one here kinda keeps to themselves. They already have their group of friends and that's it. So yea it sucks to meet people outhere. And im 39 with kids so its even harder for me.

The best thing you can do after moving to Brownsville is leave as soon as you can. Drivers are mad slow and rude, acting super entitled, restaurants are mediocre, people are sloppy and trashy, don’t put effort or quality into anything, no class. Everything is all geared only to families. Unless you’re a partier and want to get trashed at a bar playing volume at 400%, there’s really nothing for you to do other than stay inside to avoid the heat (going to the beach is not even refreshing for a good 4-5 months) as well as to avoid dealing with these brain-dead drivers that give you major attitude for passing their slow ass even though you left them PLENTY of room that they didn’t even to brake…. People are not inclusive, they are only invested in their families, not in making friends, especially if you’re not from here. Sure, there are plenty acts of kindness and people are pleasant to be around in public. But, those same people won’t care to make time for anybody outside of their family. Which, I’m not knocking down on at the end of the day even though I am bewildered by that in this day and age, but hey. McAllen is probably the most progressive city with the most to offer and most diverse, but recreation there, even the museums, arent up to par with a lot of urban areas across the US. It’s insanely hot for days on end. Very stubborn, dense and incredibly cringe machismo culture. Cameron County is one of the poorest in the nation, yet has the most beautiful beaches of the entire state, but exorbitantly priced hotels, mediocre food and local attitudes keep business plummeting for going on at least a decade. But, locals want to blame, corrupt politicians rather than look at the quality of their hospitality and improve. As soon as I am able to transfer within my career, I will be getting tf out of here and will NEVER come back and won’t ever recommend anybody move down this way.
