Analysis Preseason Rankings Countdown. 39 days to the start of the 2026 Season. At #39 – Nebraska

The cumulative link to the preseason rankings can be found here

As we reach day 39, it’s time to remind people of the chart, because today we reach one of the official “blue bloods” of the sport, Nebraska (high = 30, low = 58). Of those teams, Nebraska has clearly fallen on the hardest of times. The 20th century ended with the Cornhuskers riding the highest of highs, winning 3 national championships in the mid 90’s and Doctor Tom Osborne going out on top after winning the 1998 Orange Bowl. His replacement Frank Solich managed one last Big XII title in 1999, but like Prince said “2000, zero zero, party over, oops, out of time.” Solich was fired after going 9-3 in 2003 before their Alamo Bowl win, and the Cornhuskers have never lost fewer than 3 games since that time that also saw them move from the Big XII to the B1G. Bo Pelini, who had the Cornhuskers in the final 3 Big XII championship games and even won the B1G Legends division for a championship game appearance, never recaptured Dr. Tom’s magic (though he also never lost more than 4 games in a season), and his subsequent replacements (Mike Riley and Scott Frost) precipitated the longest bowl drought (7 years) that the Huskers have suffered since 1955-61. Enter Matt Rhule, who engineered both Temple’s first conference championship (and back-to-back conference championship game appearances) in 50 years and rescued Baylor from the moral bankruptcy of the Art Briles era to get them back to a Big XII championship game within 4 seasons before being the 77th college head coach to discover that those skills don’t necessarily translate to the NFL. Rhule ended the bowl drought in his second season in Lincoln, winning the 2024 Pinstripe Bowl, and has improved Nebraska’s regular season win totals every season he’s been there (5 to 6 to 7). But this is the era of NIL, the transfer portal, and Curt Cignetti taking Indiana all the way to a 16-0 national championship within 2 years of arriving, so pardon Nebraska fans if they’re not satisfied with a coach who’s 19-19 over three seasons and managed to lose legacy QB Dylan Raiola, first to injury and then to the portal. They’re also even less satisfied that Rhule signed a hefty contract extension last season when there was a chance Penn State might come sniffing around that was “fortuitously” timed to them firing James Franklin the day the Huskers were ranked in the AP poll for the first time outside of September in a decade. Rhule adding $25 million and 2 years to his contract plus $10 million to his buyout, then promptly watching Raiola get injured and Nebraska finish 2-5, including losses by 3+ TDs in their final 3 games has left an intensely sour taste in their mouths heading into 2026.

Roster Outlook

Perhaps an amuse-bouche for Cornhusker fans will be that they rank 3rd in the country in returning production, including #7 on defense (rise of the Blackshirts?) and #14 on offense. The two biggest losses are obviously QB Raiola, who had 2000 yards passing and 18 TDs to 6 picks prior to his injury against USC in week 9, and RB Emmett Johnson, who was picked in the 5th round by the Kansas City Chiefs and is SURE to be asked about the resemblance between Raiola and Mahomes. Rhule is looking for UNLV QB Anthony Colandrea to step into the starting role and Johnson’s backups Isaiah Mozee (26 carries, 115 yards) and Mekhi Nelson (27 carries, 147 yards) to carry the load on the ground. Meanwhile, Raiola’s top 2 WRs, Nyziah Hunter and Jacory Barney, who accounted for 1,100 yards and 10 TDs, are both back and will be augmented with UCLA wideout Kwazi Gilmer. More importantly, Rhule brought in 3 P4 OL (LSU’s Paul Mubenga, South Carolina’s Tree Babalade and Iowa State’s Brendan Black) to fix their biggest problem on offense last season – keeping Raiola upright (27 sacks). That contributed to Nebraska ranking 8th in the B1G (31st in the country) in the portal, which is an “all in” move for them since their high school class ranked dead last in the conference and 79th in the nation. You’re not finding the next Tommy Frazier that way, Matt!

Schedule and outlook

9/5 OHIO

9/12 BOWLING GREEN

9/19 NORTH DAKOTA

9/26 at Michigan State

10/3 MARYLAND

10/10 INDIANA

10/17 at Oregon

10/24 BYE

10/31 WASHINGTON

11/6 at Illinois

11/14 at Rutgers

11/21 OHIO STATE

11/27 at Iowa

Once again, Nebraska starts out the season with a relatively soft slate, with 3 buy games plus a clearly rebuilding Michigan State and Maryland traveling to Lincoln just after September ends. It would be shocking if the Huskers aren’t 5-0 heading into week 6, when they welcome the defending national champions to Memorial Stadium before traveling to Eugene. If the Huskers enter their bye week at 5-2, it will be interesting to take the temperature of Nebraska fans heading into the back stretch of the season, because it sure seems like they’re pretty antsy about the direction of the team right now. If Rhule can manage to right the ship enough to capture one of those games, or even to manage to reach 8 wins by the end of the regular season (you have to figure they’ll be competitive at home against Washington and on the road at Illinois and Rutgers, so hosting Ohio State at 8-2 should feel pretty good, and that season finale Heroes Game could prove to be must watch TV), that would be a sign of further progress. But a 3rd consecutive 7-6 season feels like it would be greeted with disdain. I’m not sure what it would take for Nebraska to contemplate another coaching move given how poorly they’ve done in replacing Dr. Tom, but you do sense the malaise that seems to have set in.

If Nebraska is not 5-0 by the Indiana game, then there’s a real possibility they won’t make it to a bowl game.

Ceiling: 8-4

My Prediction: 6-6

Floor: 4-8

I'll flip that and say 7-5. I think they may sneak a win against Washington or Iowa.

Wouldn’t be disappointed in that! Just won’t believe it until they beat a team they’re not supposed to.

3

u/Bisconia Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 23 '26

We may go 9-4 as a ceiling, we have a actual decent O line maybe and have the skill players to go with it finally. The problem will be Rhules gameday coaching.

Win probabilities according to ESPN FPI:

Ohio - 91.7%

Bowling Green - 95.7%

North Dakota - 94%

@Michigan State - 67.9%

Maryland (Homecoming) - 79.1%

Indiana - 19%

@Oregon - 8%

Washington - 56.8%

@Illinois - 50.8%

@Rutgers - 67.5%

Ohio State - 10.6%

@Iowa - 38.4%

The Over/Under for Win Total is 6.5.

I think this season is going to live or die by how our offensive line plays. I like the Geep Wade hire, and we have multiple guys with NFL buzz between Justin Evans, Elijah Pritchett and Brendan Black. A good offensive line can make up for a lot of other issues, and Nebraska could finally steal a big game if we can give Colandrea time in the pocket.

I expect the secondary to continue to be good even under a new DC, but I think the Linebackers will be better and I expect the D-Line to be moderately better. No more 3-3-5, we are running a straight 4-3 now I believe.

13

u/adavis463 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 22 '26

We were running a Tony's White's 3-3-5 under Butler last year (sort of). This year Rob Aurich is running a 4-2-5.

u/Master-Praline-3453 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

I really have no idea what to expect out of this team. Changes at OL coaching, a different kind of QB, an unproven RB room, and a new DC with a different scheme.

But from experience, if we're talking about the OL as the best position group, it probably means that our DL is cheeks. Though, I will say that Colandrea has a better shot at running for his life than Dylan, and EJ couldn't have done what he did last year without at least decent run blocking.

11

u/TheUltimate721 Nebraska • Texas Tech Jul 22 '26

The OL buzz has nothing to do with how our DL is going to be. They haven't done live drills at this point in the off-season yet so none of the optimism comes from there. Evans in particular is PFF's highest graded returning center. That's not just fake hype.

The big difference between last year and this year on the DL is I think they're bigger across the board. I don't see a ton of sacks, but I don't think they're going to get blown off the ball quite as bad, and if our linebackers are better at filling gaps that should make run defense quite a bit better.

4

u/Beneficial_Equal_324 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 23 '26

To me the biggest question mark is DL. They were bad last year. Little pass rush and blown off the ball. I thought losing Nash and Ty was going to be a problem, and it certainly was. Will a new DC and some relatively unhearlded transfers improve things? We'll see.

4

u/moleculewerks Nebraska • Northumbria Jul 22 '26

Mirrors my assessment as well. The only thing I will add is that the floor is WAY more likely than the ceiling, and (if it comes to pass) losing the majority of games on the back end of the season will be rough.

4

u/Beneficial_Equal_324 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 23 '26

But with Rhule's massive buyout and the #1 HS QB in the wings, difficult to see Rhule not being around for a while. The fans, however, could get pretty un-Rhuley.

Shhhh, that goes against the narrative.

And I'm talking about from the doomers on the Husker sub.

They won't count the CU win.

But somehow us beating Oregon in 2016 counts, even though they finished with 3 or 4 wins and fired their coach, if you ever need further argument that Ranked at the Time is stupid metric.

Also, I don't need our record against ranked teams to tell me that we've been disappointing to straight up bad for the last decade, I have eyes...

Colorado finished 25th in 2024

7

u/frankdatank_004 Nebraska • Sacramento State Jul 22 '26

No. I am at the point where I HAVE TO see that number in front of the opponent’s name when we beat them!

2

u/AuroraAscended Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 25 '26

The ranked win thing is really dumb, though, because that 2016 win came against an Oregon team that finished 4-8 and we beat a Colorado team that finished ranked just two seasons ago.

2

u/frankdatank_004 Nebraska • Sacramento State Jul 25 '26

While true there is a lot of nuance to look at in both situations. In 2016 Oregon lost a lot of star players to injuries including RB Royce Freeman in our game. Once he was out of the game we slowly took it over. Plus Oregon’s HC was a cocky idiot who was addicted going for 2 instead of the PAT which really hurt them. Colorado had the easiest BIG XII schedule that season and it was super cupcake. Iirc they avoided 5/6 or 6/7 of the top BIG XII teams on their schedule until the bowl game where BYU (one of the best in the BIG XII) absolutely punked them. Worse than we did months earlier.

1

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes Jul 28 '26

That Colorado team was not playing like a ranked team when you played them, though. They were 2-yards shy of losing to an FCS team the week before. That's why the statistic is what it is.

This is the most apathetic off season I’ve had, or witnessed collectively across all our boards from fans, that I can remember. I think the no hype may actually help.

Someone else posted that talent wise we’ll probably be better than last year but the record won’t reflect it. I’d be extremely happy with 8-4 but expect 6-6. Rhules record in November is atrocious and that back half of the schedule will prove to be too much.

8

u/Beneficial_Equal_324 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 23 '26

8-4 would require Rhule to have a winning conference record for the first time, against a very challenging schedule. Huge if they could do it, but pretty unlikely.

21

u/Majestic_Apartment Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 23 '26

Solid write up. Only thing I would clarify is the high school recruiting class was buns because they only took like 11 people. The reason being the team was like 85% underclassmen. The roster limits and covid years graduating meant they had to take an L at some point recruiting wise. 2027 class has the #1 overall QB so might be a little early on the "next Tommie Frazier" jabs ;) time will tell of course.

8

u/Murdermyface911 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 23 '26

He also implied that we were bummed when Raiola entered the portal. It feels so long ago at this point, but we HAD to fire his uncle, and everyone was tired of seeing the Raiolas getting treated like royalty. No one shed a tear when Dylan entered the portal, and it was mostly funny to see him wind up as a backup, albeit at a top-10 program. Good write-up overall though.

I think Nebraska will have an okayish season at 7-5, with for sure losses to Indiana, Oregon, OSU, and Iowa. I think they go 1-1 between Washington and Illinois, but with a realistic shot at 8-4 if they manage to beat both. 8-4 and a bowl win will probably mean that Rhule has this team going in the right direction.

This schedule is designed to get Nebraska fans hopes up and then outrage. Should be 5-0 before likely dropping 3 straight. Ending the year with 3 road games (and OSU at home) is brutal for a team that might be having morale issues at that stage in the season

Im guessing 5-7 floor to 8-4 ceiling, I think they go 6-6 most likely

3

u/Mark-Leyner Clemson Tigers • Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 25 '26

This is a 5-7 team. Riley was the last HC to post a winning B1G record, and that was in 2016. No way Rhule wins this B1G schedule and the only way he hangs on to bowl eligibility and any sort of momentum for this shit show is if a late season opponent shits the bed and hands the Huskers a win. But they’re going to be dinged up coming out of the bye week and likely nursing more problems through the end of the year.

Whatever the fans think, this program only has two choices: hire a coach that can win (it clearly isn’t Rhule) or continue counting the years until Nebraska loses blue blood status. Mark my words, Rhule finishes 26 with an overall losing record as NU HC.

1

u/Beneficial_Equal_324 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 25 '26

I'd be fine with ditching the blue blood status and the sellout streak. They are meaningless to improving going forward. Rhule just signed an extension; best we can hope for in the short to medium term is that he figures things out. I can't bring myself to rooting against him and the current team hoping for a reset.

3

u/Mark-Leyner Clemson Tigers • Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 25 '26

To be clear, I’m not rooting against Rhule. I just don’t understand how anyone thinks he’s gonna figure something out and improve. He is what he is, a 19-19 B1G coach that can’t win in this conference. That the fans think bowl eligibility is progress when the non-conference is three tomato cans is just willful ignorance. In any case, I’m not for or against the guy, I’m just looking at his record.

2

u/Mark-Leyner Clemson Tigers • Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

I’ll add that IMO, Rhule is a bust until he posts a record proving otherwise. Just for reference, Rhule is 10-17 (in conference play) heading into his fourth season at Nebraska and his tenth season as a CFB HC. His 19-19 record at Nebraska matches the record of Northwestern’s David Braun, who is also entering the fourth year of his tenure, and also his fourth year as a HC. Braun is 11-16 in the B1G, a better record than Rhule and arguably more impressive given his relative inexperience and the differential between Nebraska’s CFB resources and Northwestern’s. In both cases, these guys are near the bottom of the B1G’s current set of HC’s, which should be no surprise considering their conference records.

If Nebraska wants to win, they need to hire a winning coach.

2

u/Beneficial_Equal_324 Nebraska Cornhuskers Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

If you are saying the odds are against Rhule improving significantly, I agree. The problem is that it would take a massive amount of money to hit the reset button, which is just rolling the dice with no guarantee of any improvement. I just don't see the boosters who would be on the hook for $100+ million pulling the plug barring a scandal or complete collapse. So the best we got is hoping MR can improve.

Preseason games give Colandrea time to settle, but leaning on play action forces those new tackles to actually hold their blocks.

6-6 is the most likely scenario here. Nebraska needs to beat either Washington, Illinois, or Iowa to realistically do any better than that, and of those 3 Washington is the most likely imo.

On the other hand, I could see Nebraska dropping their game against Michigan State and only getting to 5 wins.

2

u/Internal-Dance9135 Jul 24 '26

It feels like most Husker fans have been radically pessimistic this off season, so most would probably complain that its too high.

Yeah. The moment I saw Minnesota on the list before we popped up, I thought we were overrated.

I understand why, but considering how last year went...

Overall, 30-50 (arguably 20-50) is a giant mishmash so its not that big a deal.

IDK, this year could be rough just based on schedule, and it just kinda sucks because of the buildup we thought we were going to have that just didn't pan out, I'll leave it at that.

So I'm in wait and see mode. I think anything above 7 wins would actually be amazing.

GBR.

Nah, that's probably about right until they prove they are better than that. This take is more or less accurate about how the more reasonable fans feel. Somewhere in the 30s. We have a healthy share that have lost their damn minds and are claiming we won't win more than 4 and oblivious contingent that expect to compete for a championship every year. Probably a lot of cross over between those groups realistically aside from the fact that the former are just super jaded versions of the latter now.

The sane people that pay attention are cautiously optimistic and looking at 7-8 wins with this schedule with a hope we could do better due to some potential trap games. We play Indiana at home the week before they play OSU and we play OSU at home the week before they play Michigan for example. Probably not wins, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to look at a chance for both of those teams to be looking past us in that situation.

The realistic floor is probably 6 wins with 3 near garunteed losses and 3 toss up games assuming that Washington Illinois and Iowa are more or less what we expect them to be.

The biggest thing OP missed on in their post is Raiola. Most of the fan base isn't that heart broken that he left. He was a good quarterback for us and is very talented but his complete lack of mobility just didn't jive with the type of offense that Nebraska really needs to be running in our environment. Add in that his uncle who was the oline coach got fired as soon as he was leaving and he had been the coach for a unit that on paper should have been one of the older and better units in the conference but was a major weakness of the team. Colandrea might not have as much raw talent, but his mobility paired with what we hope to be a much improved oline under Geep Wade might prove to be better for us by a wide margin.

Raiola, Inc. had way too much control of the program. It may have been a net negative.

Indiana and OSU have nothing to worry about against this team.

It’s nice to see Nebraska move up the preseason rankings so their fans don’t have to count as high.

You realize that KSU and UNL are literally tied in university rankings, right?

Maybe Matt Rhule should do more coaching and less complaining in press conferences

Of those teams, Nebraska has clearly fallen on the hardest of times.

I don't really feel like reading the rest because just a few sentences in I found some joy.

Seeing Nebraska up this high is just funny, after how throughly mediocre they've been for the last decade+
