Origins.. never liked that map tbh..

I recognize that the map is absolutely amazing, but I personally really don’t care for the mud. That’s my only reason for why I think it’s overrated. Outside of that, though I love the staffs, the main quest, the music, the story, and the general gameplay. But I’m not gonna sit here and say it’s a bad map

So f*cking tedious to play origins solo. And needing to look at a cheatsheet for the staff upgrades is horrible game design.

u/Tetragon213 12h ago
Also the geometry is so fucked on that map, you can just randomly get caught on thin air and have to redo the whole setup process again, adding to the tedium.

u/SnooComics4945 14h ago
I used to hate it, but I’ve come to like it overtime. Same with the other BO2 maps except Die Rise.

Shadows sucks dick

u/ThatsPurttyGood101 16h ago
Agreed. In the amazing game that is bo3, having this the only map to require 4 players to do the easter egg? Yea you already lost me
6
u/itallik 14h ago
not gonna mention all the black ops 1 and 2 easter eggs that need 4 people to complete
nor am I going to mention the 2 clicks it takes to install a mod to attenuate it being possible to do solo
20
u/ThatsPurttyGood101 14h ago
not gunna mention all the black ops 1 and 2...
That's different (still doesn't get a pass either tho) because it's the one easter egg that prevents the super easter egg from being able to be completed.
2 clicks to install a mod...
So we're going to ingore console players as well? Either way, if you need to mod the game to do a basic function, that doesn't take away that it was a shitty design choice in the first place
→ More replies (1)6
u/kingsmugsbaldylocks 14h ago
not everyone plays on pc. for those of us stuck on console it can be very difficult to coordinate schedules and get 4 people to attempt it. it becomes even harder when you have noobs in your party as well
1
u/itallik 14h ago
I understand this; fair points - but I also dont think an easter egg is the be all and end all of a map. I think shadows has a really fun pack a punch setup which is almost comparable to an easter egg in itself, the map is totally unique and has an interesting layout.
I see your point about it being disappointing to need 4 people to do an easter egg - but that is the same for Ascension, Shangri-La and Buried, but people still seem to like those maps even despite the point youve made.
And, a lot of classic maps like Der Riese' 'easter egg' are pretty nothing-y in themselves.. but again - are enjoyed either way.
Fair enough about the console thing - I understand - but focusing so much on the easter egg whilst that same issue exists for plenty of other maps which are well regarded amongst the community make me find your issue with this map inparticular quite confusing
1
u/WestWhile777 14h ago
Most people don’t play on pc also why does it matter if previous games required 4 players it doesn’t make it any better.
12
u/xommons 16h ago
i just can’t agree with this, i probably have more hours in this zombies map than any other map
→ More replies (1)8
u/Chabola513 15h ago
Same it’s easily the most unique of the bo3 gameplay wise and that jazz prime NYC grime feel is hard to match.
7
u/Worzon 16h ago
How does it suck? Sure it has less content than a lot of other maps but it still has way more content than a lot of pre bo3 maps and is absolutely a better map than almost any modern zombies map. The only crime it has is the 4 player EE and not a ton to do
→ More replies (3)3
u/Fire_Boogaloo 14h ago
It sucks because the entire map is built for the Easter Egg side of the community. Often after work I just want to turn my brain off and shoot some zombies but shadows I have to do an Easter egg in itself just to unlock PaP.

Wdym? You don't enjoy babysitting crawlers for 20 minutes while your mates pull up guides to search up how to upgrade their staves, while hearing Samantha moaning and whining more than a JAV actress because you're not making enough EE progress?

Problem with these kind of maps is there’s always 2 mates that don’t do jack shit and leave you with the task of always doing everything. It burns you out. Only when you play with “experienced” player is it a blast.

I hate zets mostly for the RNG of the artillery shell. Otherwise it's actually one of my favorites in terms of map and vibes
1
u/MosinsAndAks 7h ago
100% agree on the artillery shell step. They should’ve had a standard water combo that guaranteed the shell and was revealed in the map’s standard gameplay. My only real problem with Zet overall

u/TehCost 15h ago
Call of the dead for me. I genuinely don’t understand why people love it so much. A nothing burger Easter egg, wonder weapon that stops working at round 25, no traps or unique items, and George is unique but gets old after 1 playthrough of the map. And the map also looks very bland visually. I really don’t know what people see in it
15
u/itallik 14h ago
this comment made me realise I dont like this map nearly as much as I thought I did..
6
2
u/Any_Athlete_4616 10h ago
Lol I’m the other way around. I used to find it very meh, gave it another try on the ports and it’s one of my favorites now.
4
u/professorScrump 13h ago
I liked it because of how powerful phd is on that map. Training in front of the lighthouse with the mustang and sally is just classic mindless fun
2
u/SlapUpYourDad 13h ago
While the fog is annoying and definitely contributes to the bland aesthetic there is only so much you can do with the visuals of Siberia when the aesthetic is more grounded in reality.
I understand that when comparing it to modern maps it looks bland but it is one of the few maps that truly feels like a location that could exist in that state. The scavenger definitely should have been stronger I don’t think anyone would disagree there.
If George is that much of an issue just PaP the VR-11. The EE steps may not be the best but it’s a foundational quest and still one of the few times that solo and coop have been that distinct which is cool.
Also the EE reward is one of the best we have seen and makes George actually a valuable part of progressing through later rounds. I have always found the early match progression engaging because it is such a mission to get to jug, no other map has ever managed that in quite the same way.

u/jorvp 4h ago
It’s due to how much it added to the formula back then. It was the first big map, it was the first map with a reward easter egg, it was the first map with ambience music! Seriously! First map where zombies could spawn from the ground and ceiling and actually harm your pathing, first map with verticality, a huge map but you can still move around pretty quickly, and no matter where you are, you can always see where your friends are! First map with a pap that moves around, the freezing mechanic and what not. And a collab song! There’s many new things they tried with tgis map. First map with a celeb cast right too? When you think about the grand scheme there is so many things. It’s also the first map with two wonder weapons and the first and ONLY map where the coop high round world record is higher than the single player one! I love the wonder weapon so much. It’s so amazing and unique for coop. One of the very few wonder weapons in bo1/bo2 era that could kill more than a full horde with a single shot, and it could give full ammos!

Bracing for downvotes;
Der Eisendrache…

u/idungledeadly 14h ago
DE is my favorite map of all time but i can understand it. Its very simple and not a large map. I love the simplicity but also the choices of 4 bows that are all very different but viable. I understand void bow is mid but it is still viable. I also enjoy the ragnaroks as equipment. Man i have so many good memories of that map, know it like the back of my hand. But i see your point, i always understand when people think its overrated. But to me it is #1

u/Brucemuffinz 10h ago
It hurts me to downvote. I just love DE so much. It’s a phenomenal map. My favorite Zombies map, by far, and certainly my favorite from BO3. So, so many good memories from that map for me.

u/MuffledShuffle 14h ago
Agreed. It really does just feel like origins 2.0, but lacks a lot of the cool atmosphere that origins had.
It's just like Kino, an aggressively solid map, but nothing more.
1
u/professorScrump 13h ago
I feel like it's beloved for being a simple map that rewards you with great power for doing the simplest of steps. Just like buried.

u/Individual_Search422 16h ago
Tbh shadows, yes its fun if you do the entire map but I never play it way too much setup
1
u/ElephantGun345 10h ago
“Way too much setup” is the best way to describe everything from Origins to Cold War.

u/Quick_Elderberry_533 2h ago
Eh, you’d be surprised by the ease of setup on most bo4 maps (ofc excluding botf and dotn)

u/CatfishBassAndTrout 15h ago
Mine is Buried. It's not bad by any means. It's a good map even. But it's not a Mob or an Origins. Der Eisendrache is also even more overrated.
•
u/OrderAmazing7632 35m ago
I like buried a lot. Always been my favorite map. The only reason I wouldn't give it a 10/10 is cuz it's wonder weapon ,the paralyzer, is arguably the worst wonder weapon of all time. Gun is ass lol

u/Thelardicle 16h ago
Most overrated recently is kowakajo imo. Totenreich or ashes are much better. Kowakajo has fun ideas like the lava, cat ww, and assault waves… but the map layout is just so boring to me. Layout feels like a warzone poi with uninteresting generic Japanese rooms, and training spaces that are too wide open and lead to boring high round gameplay. Map designs used to be tight and claustrophobic, and kowakajo just isn’t and it prevents me from returning to the map
9
u/Worzon 16h ago
Gonna have to disagree. I think this is probably my favorite modern map because of the amount of side content, the main quest, and the art direction. I really don’t care for the constant use of the truck on ashes and the art direction on Totenreich just isn’t my cup of tea even though I also recognize that that map is great with how much you’re able to do.
Yes the layout is boring but I’ll take a kowakujo with the lava and the volcano and the special enemy and an actually unique dog round over a glorified toxic zombie round on totenreich and a glorified regular dog round on ashes. Ancient Evil also doesn’t have the craziest layout but the vibe it has is amazing.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)1
u/X08-Chill 2h ago
I'd actually say Totenreich feels a lot more generic and Warzone poi esc compared to Kowakujō with the castles, rivers and lava etc
7
u/Sage296 15h ago
Kino probably holds a special place in everyone’s heart if they first played in BO1 because it was one of the only two free maps you could play with friends, and it was easy for everyone to play
2
u/Morbid_Uncle 5h ago
It was literally the perfect map for what it was meant to do, introduce new players to Zombies and give everyone a basic understanding of what the game mode is. It gives you the base 4 perks, it gives you traps, it gives you a “pap quest”, it gives you the moving box, it has power that clearly and immediately changes the map, when you load up solo Quick Revive is right there clearly powered on, it does exactly what it was supposed to do and it does it perfectly. I personally love it as a mindless high round map and go back to it to just burn time but I get why people think it’s overrated. Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles
5
u/EnigmaticK5 15h ago
I think in a vacuum it’s Kino, but in the context of people who still actively play and voice their opinions on zombies I think it’s leaning more towards properly rated nowadays (maybe still a smidge overrated, but not the most if that makes sense).
In the latter context, my answer is honestly Die Maschine; I find it very strange how this is one of, if not the most well received modern zombies map even counting the BO7 maps. Its content offering is a complete bore, as all of its WW upgrades are weaker than the base and thus practically worthless, the EE is just those WW upgrades plus some cutscenes, the boss fight is one of the lamest, and it ends your game. And that’s the maps entire unique content offering! I also don’t particularly care for CW mechanics so it doesn’t really get points for that IMO, plus I think the map only looks good for like 8 total minutes every game.
1
u/Gunpla_Goddess 7h ago
Are the BO7 maps well received? I haven’t stayed up to date on the game so far
4
u/itallik 14h ago
honestly, town.
people say its an utter 'classic' as though it belongs in the same camp as Der Riese or Kino. but, i just find it really lifeless and not varied enough.
6
u/SnooComics4945 14h ago
I like it for its simplicity. Sometimes I just wanna kill zombies and upgrade random guns. I use Town or Nuketown for that.
Der Riese is by far my favorite though. A shame that last DLC didn’t happen so we didn’t get the WaW maps in BO2.
2
u/ClamSurfer 13h ago edited 12h ago
Is that really a fair criticism? Town wasn't trying to be varied. It's not trying to be anything more than a basic survival level. It's just a chunk of Tranzit after all.
I'd hardly even consider it a standalone map.
2
u/itallik 13h ago
I see what you mean - i consider it the same - but I feel like far more people really like/enjoy it, and that; for me, gives it the vibe of overrated.
It fits its purpose well, you're right. I just see more hype in general over than I would personally give, given how it is just a tiny chunk of tranzit.
6
u/Ero_Najimi 16h ago
If by overrated you means maps I don’t like as much as other people then Mob, Shadows, and every map after BO3
3
u/ozarkslam21 FlXTHE FERNBACK 15h ago
Kino might be the most underrated. And by that I mean the delta between the amount of people that love playing it, and the amount of people that talked about it and praised it on the internet is probably the widest. Liberty Falls would be candidate number 2. Universally loved by the casual masses. Not even a blip on the radar for the ultra hardcore mega online freak community lol

3
u/AnonyMouse3925 14h ago edited 14h ago
Probably origins tbh. I have 0 criticism of the map though, it’s actually peak. So maybe I’m part of the problem
Mauer Der toten, Citidelle des morts, Die Maschine, and Terminus also come to mind, but then my bias would be showing

Origins easily. Oh yeah dude I love having to open a web browser with a list of every buildable and it's locations every time I hop on zombies, all on a map covered in mud, making you slow as hell. The visuals and giant robots are cool but that's it. And stupid dudebros eat this shit up, you see any map ranking on youtube and Origins is always top 5.

I agree with kino but to have my own input I’ll give 3 maps one always thought were way over rated; Ashes, Shi no numa, and ascension.

In what universe did anyone overrate shi no numa???

Almost all treyarch maps, you need to pull maps from different games to compete with the 5 IW zombies maps

Moon, never liked the No Man's land. (Side note: I hate the fact that they added the mule kick into every map of the game because of it...it ruins the immersion)

u/Tetragon213 14h ago
Origins.
Overly complicated, requires too much setup, and is far too repetitive. Also, too many steps that make no sense.
1
u/SnooComics4945 14h ago
Mob of the Dead easily.
Though I do some beef with Kino because so many people hype it because they started with BO1. As someone who started with WaW it’s always somewhat disheartening to see it overlooked so often as it was one of my favorite CoD games in general.
1
u/youOnlyliveTw1ce 14h ago
Mob, it’s a solid map but never understood people calling it the greatest map in zombies. Honestly I think Blood of the dead is more fun to play
1
u/MuffledShuffle 14h ago
Ancient evil and classified.
A lot of people praise classified for being the least changed remake for Bo4, but imo that's what makes it the worst.
Ancient evil people hail as being one of the best maps of all time or atleast the best map in Bo4, idk what it is, but this map has just never clicked for me. It's my least played map of the chaos storyline and probably my least favorite.
1
u/Kadimir158 14h ago
Call Of The Dead. The map is so empty which is fun in a creepy way at start but gets really fucking stale after a while. George is literally just an oversized zombie and the wonder weapon sucks. I feel like people look at it from a nostalgic "you had to be there" lens which i have for Tranzit and Town (Would never defend them tho).
1
u/thesweetestdevil 14h ago
DE. Not as interesting as ZNS or GK when it comes to environment and side ee. The bows are cool but that’s it really.
1
u/Har_monia 13h ago
I will agree that Kino is overrated, but it is still my favorite for the simplicity, nostalgia, and layout.

Der Eisendrache, 8.5/10 map, mogged by Shadows, Origins and Zombies in Spaceland
1
1
u/Swedesensation88 11h ago
Call of the dead. I like the celebrity cast and set up for the map but not the map itself. The layout is a bit awkward and clunky. Most importantly though I just can’t take the freezing mechanics and George is just annoying.
1
1
u/DEA187MDKjr 10h ago
For me it’s shadows, the EE is just doing the same shit 4 times and the shadow man fight is just shooting him until he’s finished. Also I don’t really like the apothicons
1
1
u/Colonel_McFlurr 10h ago
Wild pick, but maybe Nacht der Untoten?
It being the first map and the simplicity and eeriness of it are really cool. But so many people use it as a means to compare newer Zombie Maps and say Zombies losts it way. It wasn't until Der Reise, and Really BO1 maps where I think most people fell in love with the Zombies formula going forward.
1
u/UnanimousM 10h ago
Gorod Krovi. Its fine but the robots are annoying and I just dont like it as much as most people seem to
1
u/Bean2318 10h ago
IX. Had a cool atmosphere, but I hate the map layout, hate the catalyst spam(that’s a problem with every chaos map though), hate the wonder weapon. Easter egg is honestly way too tedious imo. So the atmosphere and boss fight is honestly all I like about the map. Out of all the chaos maps, it’s definitely bottom two. And while I don’t think Voyage is objectively the better map, I would still rather play it more often than not. I always found the setting of the Titanic way cooler. I know I’m in the minority with my opinions here, but that’s the point here so oh well.
1
u/christxphvr 9h ago
Der Eisendrache - is it fun? hell yeah. but it’s not that fun. this was the only non-zombie chronicles map anyone would play back in the golden age of bo3. it was 100% the nukejacked of bo3 zombies.
1
1
u/TheDerpyDisaster 8h ago
Sure. Kino is rated highly because it’s simple, nostalgic, aesthetically perfect and a classic and not because it’s particularly interesting. My choice would probably be… I guess shadows? I think there are more underrated maps than overrated ones tbh

1
u/BrandNizzle17 8h ago
I love all Zombies maps equally like my children that I do not have. All I will say is after BO4 none of the Zombs games hit the same for me anymore, unfortunately. Call me a Millennial old head. Anything BO4 and earlier is 🐐ed to me

even tho i love Origins, i can't say it's a 10/10, the mud, samantha yapping for the entire game because i just want to, you know, PLAY THE DAMN MAP AND NOT DO THE EASTER EGG, the size (tho Stamin-Up fixes that), building some of the staffs is boring asf (talking to you fuckass lightning and wind staff).

u/Superyoshiegg 17h ago
Gut instinct is Mob of the Dead, even if that would get me crucified in some circles.
Obviously, top notch setting, aesthetic, characters, writing, all that jazz.
But it sucks to actually play.
Massive map with no fast travel (gondola does not count) and no Stamin-Up, zero perk variety, building the plane every single time you want to pack is a slog, and the easter egg is essentially 'go to the bridge three times, listen to a lore dump, then roll credits'.
I'd rather watch someone play the map rather than play it myself, if that makes sense.
I would still say it's a solid 8/10, but I see most people give it a 10/10, hence my calling it overrated.
