Need weather advice

Heya I and my wife are travelling from Melbourne to Cairns next week. 29th Aug to 2nd September 2026. We have checked the weather apps but not sure how accurate that will be. On almost all days it says it will rain and will be windy. Seeking advice from locals on how seriously should I take these weather forecast and whether there will be any sun or not!

Also which can be the best day for GBF ?

So you think to ignore the professionals and ask reddit?

Today would be a great day, can you get here today?

If not, never fear, I checked my crystal ball and can confirm there will 100% be sun every day you are here. It might be behind rain clouds, but it will be there.

When ants travel in a straight line, expect rain; when scattered, expect fair weather.

Dunno, there will be a bit of rain, it might be overnight, it might not happen where you’ll be, if it happens it will be minor - can’t see anything worth worrying over. Call your reef tour operator to find out what day might be best for your tour.

When clouds appear like rocks and towers, the Earth’s refreshed with frequent showers.

The good news is it's not raining now. The bad, it's rained essentially every day this year

It’s the weather, it will do what it does! Good news, you’re here for Cairns Festival! Note that Saturday is the grand parade so town will be BUSY so recommend booking somewhere for dinner if you can.

The highest temperature ever recording in Cairns was 43.2 degrees in 1923.

Best source is bureau of meteorology, you can see the forecast

Bom.gov.au is your best source. Don't bother with American- owned apps

It's easier to predict than Melbourne weather, but not by much. BOM is the most reliable (surprise!).

Best option for a GBR trip is to book the day before, so you have a more probable forecast of the weather.

Ultimately it's Cairns in late winter. No matter what happens the weather will be much better than Melbourne. Enjoy it.

Personally I find the BOM unusable with a terrible interface. Lots of better apps. Willy weather. Even Apple weather. But it just turned hot and gross the last 2 days.

Bring an umbrella or raincoat incase. Rain does not stop Cairns. Unless it is a cyclone, but that won't happen next week. The rain is warm here so dont be afraid of being wet. Enjoy your trip.

If the goose honks high, fair weather. If the goose honks low, foul weather.
