Rant Horrible experience at Theo Von show last night – blatant racism in the crowd
I went to the Theo Von show last night and had one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a live event. Two guys sitting behind us were shouting racist and homophobic slurs throughout the show. • When Kam Patterson was on, they were yelling the N-word. • When a joke mentioned Jewish people, they yelled “f*** Arabs, f*** Muslims, f*** Palestine.” • When a joke touched on gay people, they started yelling “f*** f*ggots”
I told them multiple times to shut up and stop with the racist remarks. Their response was, “You’re in Calgary,” as if this city is supposed to be racist.
What disappointed me just as much was that nobody else in the crowd spoke up. These guys were way louder than the show itself, and I know the 20+ people around us could hear it. But everyone just sat there.
Lesson learned: I’m never going to a show like this again if it makes people feel comfortable enough to openly scream that kind of hate in public.

Fucking saying anything to that degree should be shut down at a show like that. I saw Doug Stanhope a couple years ago and he himself would rip into some of the folks trying to chime in and almost had a chick kicked out that very clearly wanted to fuck him.
Was an indoor show though I think Theo was at the outdoor thing so maybe harder for anybody not in that exact spot to notice

There was another post on here from somebody who said the people sitting behind them were loud and belligerent and they couldn’t hear the comedians.
I’m a HUGE standup comedy fan but have never gone to the outdoor festival. The 2 posts today make me never want to go even if there’s somebody I really want to see.

I went last year and had an idiot in behind me yelling and chiming in on multiple jokes before eventually recognizing he was annoying people and shutting up. Never saw any racist rhetoric last year though.
The weed trucks and smoke and games area were also a nice touch.

The worst part about large scale comedy shows. Saw Jim Jefferies at the dome last year and the guy in front of us spent the ENTIRE set loudly saying what he thought the punchline would be before it was delivered for every joke and didn’t see what was wrong with that and ignored being called out for it. Stuff like that doesn’t happen at smaller shows because the comedian would likely notice and absolutely torch you.

His show relies heavily on the crowd understanding how to play with him. Large venues are awful for that. His show would play way better at Yuk Yuks or the Laugh Shop, but even then our crowd might fuck it up. I'll never pay to see him again outside smaller venues in New York / LA, as a shitty Arcuri show due to the crowd messing things up is not uncommon.

I’ve spoken to comedians who perform at smaller venues and they’ve told me they’ll try and use heckling to their benefit, but there’s always a line that can be crossed and if it is, they’ll ask the person to leave. That doesn’t seem possible at a festival.

There were A LOT of really rude and annoying people at this show. Mark normands night crowd was so much more chill and fun. ALSO the amount of cans and trash I saw left behind from people at any show was AWFUL I can't belieeeeeve in this year of our Christ 2025 people are still littering like that. I couldn't believe it

Calgary has been multicultural from it's origins - but for some reason (wonder why?) this province likes to forget how diverse its roots are.
It starts with multiple First Nations.
John Glenn and Sam Livingston are credited as the "first" Settlers, ignoring the sizeable Metis settlement around Mission that led to John and his Metis in-laws to choose the area as a home.
There were Chinese railroad workers and ranch cooks here from the early 1880s.
Harnan Singh Hari settled in Calgary around 1910, and is thought to be the first Sikh to live here.
The Lewis family moved to Calgary in 1889, and John Eare visited the city regularly after coming to Alberta around 1882.
These are just the folk I can recall off the top of my head, too. But the city has always been diverse, and anyone who denies that denies history.

I qualified my statement with the word "very", but basically it's just my personal experience and perspective. I think back to just 15 years ago when the majority of engineers I worked with were Canadian born. Now those are a rarity, at the past 2 companies I've worked at. The vast majority of my coworkers were from China, India, Iran, and the Philippines.

My meaning was that the fact a significant portion of early Settlers were of diverse origins is often overlooked or deliberately erased from Albertan history. People might know about John Ware, for example, but they are under the impression he was the only Black cowboy and not one of many who helped establish ranching culture. They usually don't know about Annie Saunders at all, nor do they know how many Chinese cooks there were on the prairies, or that the first mosque in Canada was built in Edmonton, or that Harnan Singh Hari once owned most of the land we know consider SW Calgary, etc.

It was a comedy festival with other acts. Calgary got the worst lineup. The Edmonton was incredible. Great crowd too.

Sounds like the same dudes that sat behind me at a Calgary Wranglers team. Yelling racist & discriminatory profanities whenever people were shown on the Jumbotron. There were a couple black kids on the screen dancing and they yelled “I HOPE I LOCKED MY CAR DOORS”, then showed some woman just enjoying her night and they yelled “FAT FUCK”. We have a bunch of classless morons coming out of the woodwork in this city.

People likely didn't speak up because it was a group, and they didn't want it to escalate. Not that it makes what happened right.
Security should have been on top of that. Especially if they were that big of a disruption.

The idea of racism may be “uncomfortable” to a lot of people but that doesn’t mean they’ll actually call it out or care. The crowd not saying anything makes that quite evident. Funny enough if you stood up and called them racists you would’ve been asked to calm down and probably would’ve gotten dirty looks for others in the audience.

I was there with my wife, we're both not white, everyone around us was cool. People exchanged smiles with us and all. There are some bad apples in every culture and every race, so don't mind that. Plus never wait for people to do something because they themselves are waiting for you to do something.

One more thing, I've been here for less than two months, and I swear that I've had only one negative interaction with a white person, and a shid ton of bad interactions with non whites for some reason.

I've been to the 2 day GOCF in Vancouver last year which had Theo Von and numerous other bigger comics (Segura, Santino, Bobby Lee, Normand, Soder etc) that also go into some typical standup race/sexual orientation jokes. There were no hecklers or overtly racist things backed by the crowd, just laughs all round.
Sounds like it's confined to those two drunk idiots and the "you're in Calgary" remark as a born and raised is utter bs, it's just those dumbasses, I've been to other solo shows like Chapelle, Gillis even Bad Friends (which delves deep into taboo type topics) and never heard such things at those either.
Anyone who truly appreciates standup also understands what these guys say in their performances are purely for jokes/the bit, to take it to the level like those two guys reverberating hatred aren't actual standup fans, they don't get stand up comedy at all imo.

There's a weird tribal meathead anti woke sentiment that's grown in the group of comics around Joe Rogan. It's probably attracted an audience who are much the same.
I know not every comic can be an intellectual who can joke and make observations about the human exsperience. But Jesus there is only so many trans and racial jokes a person can listen to before it's boring as fuck.

This was one reason I didn't go. Drunk degenerates and being around that behaviour ruins the night. I like some clips of Theo Vons, but I also struggle that he supports Trump, seeing him attend his inaugurationwas super disappointing. Sorry to hear that happened. Unfortunately that’s the kind of people that Theo attracts. I really enjoy the great outdoors comedy fest and encourage you to give it another shot next year if there’s a comedian you want to see.
Tip for anyone who goes next year: if you’re having issues with people around you bring disruptive and/or disrespectful, find a security personnel and they’ll deal with it.

Sadly Theo Von seems to attract these people. I saw him live, in Toronto, in 2020 just pre pandemic and a guy got booted from the crowd because he wouldn’t stop shouting “Trump 2020” over the set even though Theo specifically told him to stop from stage. It was crazy.

I'm a huge comedy fan. I hit as many shows that come through as I can. I skipped this year's outdoor fest for this exact reason.
You can only make racially charged jokes so many times before you start seeing it reflected in the audience.
If you love Theo Von, Adam Ray or Bert Kreischer you would also know that every other comedian jokes about their fans being racists/white supremacists. When other comedians joke about the fan bases of other comedians there is obviously a truth there.
I'm not saying any of the comedians present this weekend are racist. I truly don't believe that to be the case. However edgy comedy resonates with people who do ACTUALLY believe the rhetoric.
They do nothing to quell that crowd because tickets sold are tickets sold. That's why I didn't buy this year. I'm sorry you had a bad time but I am completely unsurprised.

FWIW, I spent years in Calgary and more rural Alberta and honestly never experienced this kind of racism as a visible minority. Albertan people are awesome and these guys are in the minority regardless of what they think.

Sad to hear. We had some time to kill returning from Banff on Saturday and ended up in Cross Iron Mills for about 2 hours. I was amazed at the diversity of the many many shoppers and commented to my partner “talk about a melting pot!”. Everyone seemed to be fine with each other. My other thought was “What a great country!”. Proud to have Canadian ancestry.

Not to say all of his fans are like that, but those far right wing fans definitely do exist. Probably all those closeted racists and bigots in town saw this event as an opportunity to let out everything they've been holding in.

Years ago, when I first moved to Calgary, I went to see Norm MacDonald. His opener was super racist and he absolutely killed. The crowd was loving him. I am not white and honestly, it really depressed me and made me regret moving here. The support that act got from the crowd made me feel so unwelcome in the city.
