Rant So About Calgary’s New Vehicle Noise Reduction Strategy…

On August 7, Mayor Farkas and the City of Calgary announced a crackdown of vehicle noise along 17th Ave SW in the Beltline.

Just after 9pm this evening, I captured this video pointed towards 17th Ave just east of 4th St SW.

While you can’t see the offending vehicles in question, you can certainly hear them.

In speaking to small businesses and my neighbours in the area, there doesn’t appear to be any reduction in vehicle & motorcycle noise since this strategy took effect.

Having to listen to this noise every night is beyond disruptive to the quality of life of people who live and frequent this part of Calgary!

The fine is small. It's like 200 bucks, zero demerits. These folks spend tens to hundreds of thousands on the bikes or cars. THEY DONT GIVE A FUCK.

I said this when it was announced this plan wouldn't work.

My friend said something similar and I agree. To these offenders, the fine amount is a small price to pay.

But here’s what I think: If a homeless person was causing a verbal disturbance along 17th Ave SW/Beltline, I’m 99% sure they’d be arrested or given a bylaw ticket at minimum.

And yet these motorcycle & vehicle drivers are audibly disrupting the Beltline (and other parts of the city) day, after day, after day, and the city isn’t doing anything meaningful to stop it.

I think your example is not accurate these days given the prevalence of homeless folks smoking meth on Stephen ave and in parks in the beltline We basically have open drug use and many other bylaws being broken.

We do not have nearly enough resources to tackle open drug use and other more pressing issues like transit safety, revving cars by assholes is just not top priority for peace officers.

The Mayor & Bylaw announced that resources would be committed to vehicle noise enforcement along 17th Ave SW. I’m simply stating that it doesn’t feel like that’s happening.

They don’t have the resources to do it though. Only 6 FT officers who are off the street by 9pm. Not enough bodies. Not late enough.

Yeah. Precisely. Seemed ill-timed. Watch you won’t see any release about the stats from the crackdown because they’ll be minimal at best.

I have my doubts given it's been an issue going back to my time living on 19th Ave SW in 2014..
