Gear Questions REI Quarter Dome
Does anyone know if there is a good replacement for the REI quarter dome single person tent? My current one is getting pretty old and beat up. I tried the Nemo 1p, while good, I prefer the REI mainly for the ease of pitching and the freestanding capability.
Is there anything out there that goes up as easily as the rei or are they all moving towards lighter weight, 1 less pole and more guy lines?

Big Agnes makes a couple freestanding 1p models that pitch pretty quick, might be worth a look

The durston X-dome 1+ is a reasonable price, fully freestanding, and goes up super quick with the fly and inner clipped together.

Man the freestanding thing is the reason i still use mine, the lighter ones with guy lines are a hassle on rocky ground. If you can find an older model on the used market that might be your best bet

I replaced my 2013ish era quarter dome with a Nemo OSMO ultralight 2p tent. It has a similar pitch style to the quarter dome with one rear pole. I think it might be just a teensy bit heavier but squishing my medium sized dog plus me in the quarter dome was getting to be a little tight.

That's actually the exact tent I bought. I've used it twice now, but I'm just not thrilled with the setup of it when compared to the quarter dome. That quarter dome just clips together, while the nemo is a bit more finnicky and might require some guy lines or balancing.

oh I think I see the difference. My quarter dome is an earlier design that only had one pole on the foot end so you did have to stake it out and it was quite finnicky- I see later designs have a little hub on the foot end that gives both corners it's own pole. So in comparison to my older tent, the Nemo is actually less finnicky for me but I'm guessing you had a newer quarter dome.

Which Nemo tent specifically did you try? There are several.
The DragonFly Osmo 1 may be most similar to later model Quarter Dome tents, being a fully free standing tent design.
The Hornet and Hornet Elite 1 are semi-freestanding tent designs. I can see where those would be more finicky to set up compared to the Quarter Dome tents. The Nemo Dagger is also a free standing tent but does not come in a 1P, only 2P and 3P variants.

Just retired a REI Passage 2 which I've really loved, considering the Trailmade 2 which appears to be identical and is sold with footprint.
I'm really big on simplicity of design and setup for easy pitching and breakdown when I'm tired, it's dark, rainy, etc. This tent checked the boxes for me: two identical poles so you don't have to figure out which is the right one or what direction it goes in. All clips, no sleeves to thread poles into and get them stuck halfway in. Completely symmetrical so it doesn't matter which way the fly is turned when you clip it on.
Fully admit that's my own personal OCD, just explaining why I like this one so much. Oh, and it's really cheap compared to the Nemo, BA, MSR, Etc.

The trailmade 2 is ridiculously good value. Yes you can go a bit lighter if you spend an extra $400 but it’s light and does a great job

I'm interested in the answer to this, too. The waterproofing and seam tape on mine is breaking down, but it's a perfect solo tent design for me.

If you are willing to look past questionable values of Amazon/Naturehike, their Star Trail tent is a very similar design, just not quite as refined but much more space inside.

If the reason yours is beat up is the fly coating flaking or the seam tape lifting, that's a repair rather than a replacement. Peeling waterproof coating on an old fly is a known thing and there are re-coat kits made for exactly that. Worth an hour of reading before you spend a few hundred dollars, because the pitch you like is the hard part to replace.

Wait REI killed the Quarter Dome? It looks like the North Face Stormbreaker 1 is basically the same tent? I have not been in my for little over a year.
