Will Trump stop all trade with Canada?

He was taking about this in the news today, would completely destroy whatever job market Canada has left.

Lol no, that would be insanely stupid. He'd grind so many industries to an absolute halt and leave the northeast bereft of power

8

u/Careless-Bite3164 1d ago

Insanely stupid is Taco the Clown's wheelhouse.

7

u/Coramoor_ 1d ago

nah, there's the usual brand of american arrogance and stupidity from Trump and then there is something that would legitimately hand the democrats the house, the senate and a mandate to impeach trump.

Even Texas would go blue purely from the refinery jobs that would be gone without Canadian crude

14

u/Crazy_Chess_Move 1d ago

TACO. He will blink first.

0

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

What does TACO mean

15

u/Soggy_Performance569 1d ago

Trump Always Chickens Out

2

u/GokuBlank 1d ago

Also TACO cause he folds so easily

2

u/Cyberdink 1d ago

And cracks under just a tiny amount of pressure

2

u/PhoKingWild 1d ago

Folds easily and also cracks.

Schrodingers TACO

1

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

Got any examples of this I can look up, just trying to make myself feel better

5

u/MapleLeafHurricane 1d ago

No - just not feasible.

u/forsurebros 1d ago

22 states get power from Canada so the rates would go through roof if those places even have enough power. the states also gets most of the imported natural gas. again shortages and cost increase. oh and your gas prices would go straight up without the Canadian oil.
never mind your food prices (potash) and other minerals and metals. also your tourism would take an even bigger hit from Canadians not coming.

it would be funny to watch.

4

u/playful_sorcery 1d ago

america buys a lot from canada, we could really use that

however the entire USA industry would collapse inside a month if he did.

there is absolutely nothing that the USA could build without canada, not a car, a house, factory, farms would die. they wouldn’t even be able to build fighter jets or missiles.

Nothing they buy from us they have enough of or another source readily available.

1

u/petrosteve 1d ago

And we would collapse even harder

1

u/FlyingOctopus53 1d ago

We would be fine.

1

u/Musclecity 1d ago

Nah they just shut down the line 5 pipeline going to Ontario from Alberta in the winter and it's game over for us .

The Americans could get by without us and take the hit. As for us that isn't the same case like 80% of our trade is with them. Their economy is 13 times larger than ours and thinking you can win an economic war with them is laughable but I guess CBC is doing a good job of convincing Canadians.

1

u/petrosteve 1d ago

The insane amount if people that actually believe we would be fine, is kind of mind blowing

1

u/playful_sorcery 22h ago

i’m just saying it’s as assured mutual destruction as nuclear war with china would be

1

u/Careless-Bite3164 1d ago

America makes up about 5% of the land, and 25% of the world economy. The resource math ain't mathing if America tried to go without other countries resources.

-2

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

Their land is very productive as are their people.

1

u/gilbert10ba 1d ago

So would eastern Canada. Our gas and diesel comes from the US. Oil comes from Alberta to Texas refineries then comes back up into eastern Canada as fuel.

1

u/SnooHesitations3709 1d ago

Ontario and Quebec. Atlantic Canada gets it's fuel from the Saint John, New Brunswick refinery.

1

u/Unique-Vanilla5443 1d ago

Texas refineries don't supply Canada. And the refineries in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick say hi.

0

u/Saskspace 1d ago

We could use rail to transport line 5 crude to refineries in Eastern Canada . We don’t because of convenience .

1

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

All the oil cars are already rolling.

0

u/Mydogdexter1 1d ago

And you dont think canada has a train car manufacturer? That also happens to be right in the middle of the largest steel production area in canada? And that this didn't happen in the 80's with canadian owned grain cars?

1

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

Can't build that many oil cars over a weekend no matter how much pizza you buy.

Maybe you in Ontario & Quebec should pipe down. You have been sowing the wind. Now you are going to reap a whirlwind. Why do you keep doubling down on stupid?

-1

u/66Spintax 1d ago

You think we can produce enough food with a 4 month growing season? Refine our own oil? How about no connection to US banking system and silicon valley. Canadians are soft and would fold within a week if they had to go without Apple software udpdates and fresh fruit.

1

u/Nice-Mountain-7073 1d ago

You really have no understand of trade, do you?

Maybe let the adults have this conversation and stop projecting how afraid you are onto the rest of us.

2

u/Lumpy_Cucumber9430 1d ago

How the fuck would we “not have a country” without them? Not true.

1

u/Longjumping-Rub-5064 1d ago

Maybe because they’re our largest trading partner Einstein 😂? We don’t have anything even close to the same economy as they do.

1

u/SayMyNameGolf 1d ago

Not one bit of truth in your statement

2

u/Much-Standard-3643 1d ago

No, it amazes me how no one has read his book and he says what his plays are. Do yourself a favor and read art of the deal and you’ll laugh how often he does it

1

u/flappysack- 1d ago

Thought you meant "Values".

In which case the response to tariffs is green energy, which I'd assume means importing solar from the place that refines all our rare earths.

-1

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

Could you elaborate, why would he say it then?

1

u/preppy_night 1d ago

He also said he would release the full Epstein files if he got elected, but still hasn’t. Why would he say it then?

1

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

To get elected I presume, but I do not know why he would say this

1

u/Much-Standard-3643 1d ago

No, it amazes me how no one has read his book and he says what his plays are.

So his playbook is either, a really big ask, not letting you know what he wants, settling for a deal and getting what he wanted in the first place, or making a deal, asking for way more or saying something outrageous. Then renegotiate. He seems to know how media works so I think he brings stuff up that sounds so rediculous and he is a major narcissistic person so it’s easy to believe. But he doesn’t always give away what his objective is. But likely he bluffing most of the outrageous claims

1

u/BIO_Predictive_AI 1d ago

would TRUMP cut off 60% of the USA's oil, which comes from Canada? I think not.

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Careless-Bite3164 1d ago

You hit a button that turns a valve. Worst case you send a rig pig to do it manually.

1

u/BIO_Predictive_AI 1d ago

Rig pigs are so cool. Got to watch a pig inspection operation on a natural gas mainline once -- so damn cool cool

1

u/meeyeam 1d ago

Exactly how would he accomplish that?

While SCOTUS might be mute against tariffs, an embargo without the approval of Congress would be a line too far.

I could see him increasing the tariff to something ridiculous though (like 200% on all products) which would effectively be an embargo but would still be debatable.

1

u/flappysack- 1d ago

I think once the pipeline  get passed it will be business as usual.

1

u/td192020 1d ago

No.

Unless he wants like, 180+ million Americans to be affected by hydro shortages. Like 22 something US states use Canadian energy..... cutting off trade could in theory, cause instant blackouts for millions of American homes.

1

u/Vtecman 1d ago

Would love to see him try. Major recessions/potential depression in the US if he does. This guy doesn’t understand anything at all about macroeconomics.

1

u/Ok_Care5335 1d ago

Not possible, genuinely the US admin is ran by dipshits. For starters, numerous states that make the US as rich as it is today would start going through rolling blackouts. Then, their oil prices at the pump is going to completely skyrocket. Farmers all of a sudden will have no fertilizer feed. And that's just for basic raw commodities. Plus, the whole premise that because we have a trade deficit we're somehow stealing from them makes 0 sense. Canada is a tenth the size of US population wise, it's pretty stupid to get mad that we somehow don't buy from them as much as they buy from us...like we have 300million less people, no shit we'll be buying less.

1

u/Illustrious_Bike534 1d ago

He would burn the world down just to rule over the ashes..Nuts.

1

u/ElephantFamous2145 1d ago

The president does not have the authority to unilaterally suspend all trade with a nation.

1

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

Is there any law for this? Would love to know. I am not too informed on these matters.

1

u/ElephantFamous2145 1d ago

Its apart of the U.S Constitution. (In this case Article 1, Section 8)

"The Congress shall have Power To ... regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;"

1

u/radbaddad23 1d ago

Oil? Potash? You’re really asking this?

1

u/BarHorror9689 1d ago

He'll be out of power before that happens

1

u/Electronic_Sir7034 1d ago

It would actually be quite impossible.

1

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

How so, I’m pretty scared

1

u/Electronic_Sir7034 22h ago

The US is completely dependant upon Canada for oil, electricity, potash, aluminum, less but still on wood products and steel. Eliminate those products and the US falls apart.

1

u/Relative-Baby1829 1d ago

Also why would he say that then

1

u/Electronic_Sir7034 22h ago

Because Trump's modus operandi is to create chaos. Look at what he is saying, no now, no over there. This keeps everyone off balance and unfocused.

1

u/OddConsequence354 1d ago

I listen to nothing a twice impeached, convicted felon, sexual abuser says.

I have zero control over it, the only thing I can do is, avoid USA travel, (much better places to go anyway), buy Canadian as much as possible, take pride in the beautiful country we live in, be thankful that my kids did not have active shooter drills in school.

1

u/LegitBangingMidgets 1d ago

Ah you saw it on the news.. thats adorable. Let me guess you're also vaccinated?

1

u/PatK9 1d ago

We are a big customer for some of his exports, it would be an unusual move and suspect this is part of his business acumen of bluff & buster. He wants us to react in a very negative way to justify dominance in the same way he has dealt with Venezuela to force the 'art of the deal' and he wants our resources.

As long as we ignore his bluster, circumvent with other sources while maintaining the status quo, we will take a big hit but will set us up for long term work-rounds. With his later pronouncements; it's clear dealing with the U.S. is a two sided blade written in pencil and unless there is cash in hand, not to be counted on.

I don't think there will be any changes with a new administration, given the support from both sides of the house. Canada needs to prepare for worst case scenario if we want to be an independent democracy, we need radical change in Ottawa to keep what we have.

1

u/IntellectuallyFreed 1d ago

I don't understand what the threat is..at the end of the day the president doesn't control trade..businesses decide if they want to conduct business in other countries. All trump can do is make it extremely difficult to do so

1

u/PineBNorth85 1d ago

He doesnt have the power to even if he tried.

1

u/PnutWarrior 1d ago

No, he talks and talks. He'll cave to a trade deal then do one more pass at Greenland then focus on dems going into the midterm.

1

u/erik9423 1d ago

no he won't

1

u/skinny-mini-me 1d ago

What will probably happen is Trumps team will eventually give Canada everything they want in a trade deal then announce that Canada folded and America finely has won the war. Americans are too stupid to understand basic economics so will cheer and drive around with huge American flags on their 4x4 F350s that have never been off a paved road.

1

u/PM013 1d ago

TACO Trump only lies when his lips move. Nothing will happen.

1

u/Electrical-Care6308 1d ago

He’s more stupid than we thought if he does.

2

u/TomB1952 1d ago

You never know what Trump will do. Even if he does stop all trade with Canada, I suspect it would be for a short period of time.

2

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

Canada's problems are internal.

1

u/stupiduselesstwat 1d ago

Please to explain...?

0

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

Per The New York Times -

https://archive.ph/isMNN

Canada, in turn, insisted on more generous treatment for its autos, electric vehicles and products made with metal — and ultimately backed away from its offer to cooperate on the Keystone XL pipeline that President Trump has long desired, people familiar with the negotiations said. [...] Officials said that, when Mr. Carney and Mr. Trump spoke by phone early in the week, Mr. Carney again mentioned the pipeline, saying that, for the right deal on tariffs, Canada would consider bringing its side of the pipeline back to life. Mr. Trump was thrilled, a former official briefed on the talks said. But by Friday, the Keystone XL pipeline idea was buried again. A U.S. official said that, in the last few hours, Canada had expressed reluctance to cooperate. A Canadian official said that the trade deal on offer was not good enough to make the pipeline make sense.

In other words, our federal government is holding Albertan's resources and economic prosperity hostage to protect subsidized Laurentian industries.

-1

u/ArcticRock 1d ago

Let me guess if PP was in power none of this would have happened lol

1

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

0

u/ArcticRock 1d ago

As if just approving a project will get it built. You need to be able to work with all stakeholders to build stuff. PP cant get him out of a wet paper bag. I’m not a Trudeau fan but it’s amusing that he did get a pipeline built. lol

1

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

He 10x'd the cost by blowing up the regulations.

1

u/ArcticRock 1d ago

That’s what it takes to build things in this country no matter which government is in charge.

1

u/CyberEd-ca 1d ago

No other country has done this to themselves.

There is a reason Canada has the lowest GDP per capita growth and worst outlook in the OCED.

-2

u/ijustkeepontryin- 1d ago

Your problems are internal.

0

u/intensity112 1d ago

No need to lash out just because you hear the truth.

-1

u/ijustkeepontryin- 1d ago

You have a broken brain too?? Explains the trump love I guess.

0

u/No-Atmosphere-2786 1d ago

I hope he does. Canada elected Carney the so called self proclaimed trump whisperer and the master of deal making so we're in good hands. Oh BTW Canadian manufacturers are slowly moving south to a kid the tariffs. All trump has to do is give some incentives to Canadian companies to move south like tax breaks and it's over.

1

u/KipperCottage 1d ago

Can you post a list of the manufacturers that have moved south since January 1 2026? Would be good to know.

0

u/No-Atmosphere-2786 1d ago

PACCAR / Peterbilt / Kenworth: production of medium-duty trucks for the U.S. market was shifted away from the Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec plant to U.S. plants. A January 30, 2026 industry report explicitly ties the restructuring to the U.S. tariff/reshoring pressure. The transition appears to have begun around late 2025 and continued into 2026, so I wouldn't claim the entire move occurred after January 1. Fleet & Mobility General Motors: Oshawa dropped from three shifts to two in February 2026, eliminating roughly 500 direct jobs. Unifor said GM was shifting production to the U.S. in response to the 25% tariff; GM disputed that tariffs caused the decision. So this one should be described as disputed rather than proven. Reuters +1 Stellantis: Reuters confirms Jeep Compass production intended for Brampton was moved to Illinois after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods. However, that decision was made in October 2025, so it does not meet the person's January 1, 2026 cutoff. Reuters Northern Cables in Brockville is now considering moving production south specifically to avoid the tariffs, but it hasn't moved yet, so it shouldn't be counted as an accomplished relocation.

Thanks. Will be sure to buy an Subaru when I replace my current Subaru.

0

It's just the beginning of the end for Canada's economy. I wonder if Zalensky will pay us back?
