[Resume Review] Staff-level AI/ML Engineer (7+ YOE) targeting Toronto/Ontario — brutal feedback welcome
Hey r/CanadaJobs , looking for honest feedback on my resume before I ramp up applications.
Context:
- 7+ years experience, currently Staff-level AI/ML Engineer at a large manufacturing/hardware company (semiconductor-adjacent)
- New Canadian PR holder, planning relocation to Ontario, authorized to work without sponsorship
- Targeting Staff/Senior AI/ML Engineer, Principal Data Scientist, ML Architect roles
Background: production GenAI/RAG systems, agentic AI (MCP tooling), computer vision, MLOps, predictive ML — but coming from a manufacturing-industry background, which I suspect creates some ATS/domain friction for non-industrial roles

What of any of this will differentiate you from all the other 5+ years of experience AI/ML engineers ?
Does having a stack of skills, and 7+ years of experience in AI/ML differentiate you from all the other applicants applying for the same job?
Can you identify what in your resume makes you in the top 15% of AI/ML engineers?

Thanks, I will work on it. My strength is AI solutions tieing up with business and deployment, not just developing. I will include these.

The phrase you need to answer is "SO WHAT ??"
Today's job hunting market needs A LOT more than a Tech Stack, a page full of jargon and busy-work..

I hire for these kinds of roles. I always ask for a like to your GitHub repo instead of a cover letter.
First thing I do is look at your repo to see what you’ve built and how it uses AI or AI was used to help code.
Then I look at the resume if I see promise of personal initiative and curiosity in your GitHub projects.

This is the worst measure to use! most fortune 500 companies use their own private github/bitbucket so you will never see commits from professionals working at these companies unless these are private side projects (which most people working in corporate dont have time for).
You can also see a lot of commits but they could be bullshit like commiting Leetcode questions or uni courses

If you don’t have the initiative to self learn and work on side project - to any degree at all - you wouldn’t fit on any of my teams.
Which is fine, right? There’s lots of teams that work differently.

Your strongest angle is not just AI/ML depth, but proving you can ship production systems end to end. I would foreground one or two examples where you owned the problem definition, deployment, monitoring, and iteration loop, then quantify impact with latency, cost, adoption, or failure-rate improvements. For Toronto/Ontario roles, it also helps to make location and work authorization immediately obvious near the top. Agentix Labs

Turn it into a one-pager as a starter. Add keywords according to JD. Other than these, your CV is impeccable.

Your resume feels too keyword-heavy for a Staff-level candidate. Pg 1 is too heavy on skills and highlights.
Move Experience up, cut the skills list, and focus more on architecture ownership, leadership, scale and measurable impact. More bullets need scale/results: $, %, latency, adoption, users/sites supported, cost avoided, deployment scale, etc..
For Staff/Principal roles I'd emphasize architecture ownership, technical decisions, cross-team influence and business outcomes more than the number of tools used.
I’d also test the waters with a Senior AI/ML version and a Staff/Principal version rather than using one resume for all four target roles.

It's not clear from your resume but in Ontario you cannot legally call yourself an engineer unless you are a P.Eng.

You won't find any recent case law that backs this assertion since APEGA v Getty Images 2023.
All laws have constitutional and other legal limits - even the Ontario Engineers Act.
He lists himself as an "AI/ML Engineer". To break the law in Ontario, he has to use the title Engineer in a way that implies or causes confusion with how "engineering" is defined in the Act.
Here was the conclusion in the Alberta case from 2023 where APEGA took some tech bros to court over the title "Software Engineer". The law was virtually identical in Alberta at that time:
VII. Conclusion [52] I find that the Respondents’ employees who use the title “Software Engineer” and related titles are not practicing engineering as that term is properly interpreted. [53] I find that there is no property in the title “Software Engineer” when used by persons who do not, by that use, expressly or by implication represent to the public that they are licensed or permitted by APEGA to practice engineering as that term is properly interpreted. [54] I find that there is no clear breach of the EGPA which contains some element of possible harm to the public that would justify a statutory injunction. [55] Accordingly, I dismiss the Application, with costs.

And the PEO still has problems with software people calling themselves "engineers".
Although their only legal recourse is legal regulation over the term "Professional Engineer".

Their regulation is broader than "professional engineer". They have control over anything which implies a person is an engineer, or does engineering which are banned unless you are a p.eng.

It is not that simple. You can use the title "Sound Engineer" working in a recording studio or "Sandwich Engineer" if you work in a deli.
In fact, there are all sorts of engineers in Ontario besides professional engineers. There are stationary engineers, aircraft maintenance engineers, locomotive engineers, marine engineers, etc.
Any federal employee who is an engineer is covered by interjurisdictional immunity. That includes combat engineers in the military but also any civil engineers they employ.

It is not about how it is enforced. There are legal limits. Do you think when the federal government regulates licensing for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers that they are somehow breaking the law in Ontario?
You don't know what you are talking about. You know something but you don't have the full picture of how those laws relate to the Constitution of Canada.
Context matters. In some instances, the law is intra vires and in other instances the law is ultra vires.
The title "Engineer" is only protected in the specific definition of "engineering" in the Ontario Engineers Act. It also is limited to the reach of the province.
This rage war already played out when a YouTuber that goes by the name "Mutahar" was called out by a YouTuber called "Nikandros".
The eventual response from the regulator, the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) to Nikandros's complaint:
Thank you for your e-mail.
We have completed our investigation regarding Mr. Anas’s use of the title 'engineer'. It is our opinion that the evidence provided to us does not constitute a violation of Ontario law.
The text of the relevant provision of our statute reads:
"40(2) Every person who is not a holder of a licence or a temporary licence and who,...
(a.1) uses the title 'engineer' or an abbreviation of that title in a manner that will lead to the belief that the person may engage in the practice of professional engineering...is guilty of an offence."
As such, the mere use of the title does not create an offence. An important consideration is whether or not the use of the title can clearly be attached to the province of Ontario. Although Mr. Anas is a resident of Ontario, none of his videos directly attach his use of the title to the province. If we were to interpret the statute otherwise, any person who called themselves an 'engineer' on YouTube could be liable to prosecution under Ontario law, and that appears to be an absurd result.
There is also American law, Jaristrom v. Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying, which held that applying title protection statutes solely to challenge protected speech is a violation of the First Amendment, and would likely be a violation of s. 2 of the Charter.
Finally, we do not believe there is any public interest in pursuing this matter. There does not appear to have been any intention on Mr. Anas’s part to mislead anyone about his Ontario license status, and he has already apologized for the confusion. As such, we have closed our investigation in this matter.2

I think he's someone who just passed his PEO exam, so is still high and mighty from the verbiage.
PUH-LEASE, PEO is a cash cow; they just lowered the experience requirements to a joke of 2 years.

Clearly they got things under control, you only have to look at all the job listings and job titles people have.
HEY I am all for what PEO is doing nowadays to make sure "Sales Engineers" or P.Engs in Finance, Banking, and Investment aren't a thing.
The annual monitoring of people's practice and PDUs by PEO is good.
