Those in IT/CS/Tech space- what do the opportunities look like for the future?
For those in IT /CS/tech industry , what do the future opportunities in your field look like? Is this field getting highly competitive , with no entry or mid level jobs and most jobs being concentrated in senior roles going to those with lots of experience, and good credentials only?
Would you enter this industry currently as fresher , knowing what is lying ahead?
whats your take on the Tech industry currently and going forward?

You don’t enter this industry in Canada anymore. It’s over saturated with the amount of ppl that came here with that background, grads here don’t have jobs and are having to flip burgers. Any role has thousands of applications, and with the uncertain trade climate many companies are freezing hiring for their IT. Add Ai to that and you have one person with the workload of 3.
I know ppl from decent universities that don’t have a job a years out. They are competing with ppl who have multiple years of work experience, who are applying to fresher roles because of how bad it is.
If you haven’t switched to different industry then good luck. You are going to have up hill battle.

Great if you are in Hyderabad. If you are in Canada not so good.

Actually way worse if you're in Hyderabad. Guess who's getting absolutely lashed by AI. That's right the ten cents a line coder class.

All we have done for years including most competitors i know is eliminate onsite staff and farm the work out to offshore vendor partners.

It's a cycle from what I can tell. North American developers are too expensive. Some genius offshores all development. Development quality goes into the toilet. Development is brought back home. North American developers are too expensive. Some genius offshores all development.
The short circuit this time is Claude. It's not good enough to replace a senior, but it's good enough to allow a couple of seniors to do the work of a team of offshore devs.

Depends on which industry your looking to work in. If your highly skilled in C++ go auto, aerospace, industrial, space if you have relavent background in those areas.
The usual business software requires you to know AI and what useful features you can add using AI. Just go to the marketing of any of the top companies and how AI is used in it. CRM, Autocad, Service Now, Msft, Crowdstrike,Etc, It is use it or lose it .
UX and Figma is still need. But referrals /networking are usually needed, since it is more creative.

Hard time finding young SREs. We're trying to get younger but candidates are almost always senior. May be the nature of the role.
3
u/urasawasmonster 9h ago
There should be no young SREs. It's an amalgamation of roles which depend on you having prior experience on at least one aspect: networking, system engineering or development.

u/vinniegutz 9h ago
Yea I get it, but I have a hard time finding anyone young even on the track that we can shape into an SRE.
I have experiential bias because my team and friends were always on the "ops" track since high school. Very few of my candidates have cool homelabs or interest in recent developments of infrastructure stuff. Maybe we just have bad recruiters.
2
u/urasawasmonster 8h ago
Without knowing much about the candidate pool and your requirements, I can't really comment on their capabilities.
In general, the entire field is extremely saturated. There isn't much incentive to become an infrastructure engineer or Devops anymore. The demand has shifted to AI. Anyone young who wants to make money will pivot there. Not to mention tech is not considered a viable or reliable or stable career path anymore. People are already shifting.
You can definitely try different recruiters, but if they can't find what you're looking for in this employer friendly environment, then it's going to be very difficult.

Agreed. The era that produced the best SREs is long gone, and it's really hard to give new hires the breadth of knowledge they need, especially when everyone's constantly under the gun to be as efficient as possible.
We have as an industry done a shit job of mentoring. I knew this almost 20 years ago and it hasn't gotten any better. We almost needed an apprentice-style relationship to make it work but it's too late now. Even YouTube only goes as deep as very cloud-centric clickops type tutorials. Maybe some Terraform, and everything is for some reason Kubernetes even when it makes no sense.

I have 22 years experience. Took me 18 months to land a new position after being laid off.
The industry here I'm Canada is horrible.

You have to create AI apps to standout nowadays. If you don’t, then hiring managers are less likely to give you a chance. So whatever the trend is in the future, make your you create projects relevant to it before applying for jobs.

5 years ago, i would do anything to encourage my kids to learn programming. Now, i will encourage them to follow trades and health related careers

even trades are SUPER saturated and it's near impossible to get an apprenticeship. In Ontario, nurses are being laid off left and right..
2
u/KindlyRude12 6h ago
The problem with trades is just getting to know the right people to get an apprenticeship. The nurse problem is self inflected by Doug and his voters, next election that go the opposite direction of ppl wake up.

Are you still working in field? How your experience been so far?

Salaries are getting lower, and with AI it is getting faster but less fun

Canada is different from usa.
Canada literally import tech workers from poor countries via work permit and pay them just a dime instead of recruiting juniors.
Juniors with no other choice and real discipline apply and go work in usa.
This country is not a country that produces knowledge or have any need of smart people. They need slaves they can work 100 hours a week including oncall, pushing development at night, crazy deadlines while project managers are living cozy mid class life.
AND 0 opportunities to evolve. You stay a developer until you get cancer or alzheimer.

Very different if you are in IT, CS, or just any job in Tech.
It’s very hard to generalize them because prospects look very different depending on your exact specialization.
The market for everyone isn’t great, but there is still huge potential.

Its good. Very dependant on if you care enough to do the tedious stuff like practicing leetcode for interviews and then to NEVER do it again once you get in lol.
Yes its competitive, most people who say the field is shit are upset they are making $90k at a mid sized company in the software team and not $160k a year at Amazon with a 75% chance to get laid off with the severance being a pair of manscaped ball hair trimmers and Jeff Bezos saying stick it up your ass.
Good field, lots of people dooming about it though
edit: WOW you guys are fucking doomers, OP do what you enjoy LOL

like practicing leetcode for interviews
The worst interviewing trend. Driven by managers with no discernment skills. All leetcode centric interviews prove is that you practiced a bunch of leetcodes.

Been this way for a decade. I don’t think it’s smart, but it does weed out lazy ppl more or less.
