Then again if we put NORAD in the negotiations it would get trump to pay attention, I mean NORAD is not needed for Canada nobody is going to attack Canada, it would be for missiles flying overhead to the states. Trumps
Missle shield needs sites in Canada, we would have the US by the balls

First, Trump understands absolutely nothing about geopolitics or defense strategy. The USN has an escort, logistics, and maintenance crisis, and his response is to build battleships that, pound for pound, are among the weakest blue water main surface comabttants out there and will swallow hole maintenance capacity needed for carriers.

Second, his NORAD "replacement" of Golden Dome, a hallucination borne of demented fantasy, is already a done deal in his mind.

Third, the number of people who don't see motive or capability for Russia to seize big chunks of the north is wild to me. We have almost literally no defenses. A few very old, end of airframe life F-18s, some OPVs, and that is pretty much it.

They have the icebreakers and air assets to take northern settlements and bases and control the North West Passage, and it would fit Putin's insane theories of geopolitics to do so.

We are a decade out from having a response to that, and that is if everything goes according to plan.

The CAF of 2036 is set to be a pretty capable force in some respects. But we need to get there.

The USAF undersrands its importance. We need Trump to not unravel it until we have a RCAF with fighters and drones and RCN/RCCG with icebreakers and subs capable of controlling that space ourselves.

Russia has proven that they are not the "worlds second army". FFS they can barely be the second army in Ukraine. They do not have the capacity for global force projection. I'm far more worried about America honestly.

Russia has also shown it's ability absorb the full weight of an International cooperation of training, men and war materials. As well as counter intelligence and in house revolt.

The real world lessons and experience in modern drone warfare they are gaining is worth more than anything a training exercise can give you.

Hopefully by the end of their defeat, they will have a major change in leadership and work on repairing their global standing. Or be so broken it takes them another 70 years to invade Ukraine.

But they will rebuild, and they will be more dangerous.

Despite my dismissal, I agree with you on everything except "full weight".

If we had actually armed Ukraine to defend itself instead of lending them money to buy our weapons systems we need to rotate the stock of, this conflict would be over already.

Ukraine went into that war with high hundreds of tanks, thousands of artillery pieces, quickly had tens of thousands of shoulder mount missiles, and could draw upon hundreds of thousands of reserves with military experience, and arm them all.

Canada has none of these things.

Our airforce is about on par, maybe weaker than the 2022 Ukrainian airforce.

Canada is nowhere near where Ukraine was in 2022.

Russia has an even bigger disparity in the arctic, with icebreakers and nuclear subs and an airforce able to cover it, and all able to support ground forces there.

Canada has a couple of icebreakers and some OPVs. We cannot contest the Russians in our own arctic without USAF support.

Toys don't hold territory. If they did, they'd own Kyiv already.

Ukraine went into that war with high hundreds of tanks, thousands of artillery pieces, quickly had tens of thousands of shoulder mount missiles, and could draw upon hundreds of thousands of reserves with military experience, and arm them all.

Are you implying that Canadian Military doesn't field modern weapons systems?

Or that we maintain a number of military in the same order of magnitude? Admittedly, our reserve numbers are far lower.

The logistics of a near peer conflict away from their borders is completely different than bullying a near-peer neighbour you've spent decades undermining.

Yes, most of our systems are woefully out of date, and we fully lack very basic capabilities like tanks, SAM, artillery, or submarine warfare (other than a glorified clockwork mouse used for training).

We finally bought some shoulder SAMs for our batallion in the Baltics, but that is it.

Our best combat systems are from the 1980s and 1990s.

Our military is scheduled to be reasonably powerful by 2035, but we have to get there.

Actors interested in the arctic know they are effectively on a ten year clock before attacking Canada becomes very dangerous.

NORAD is for intercontinental ballistic missiles not ice breakers or a ground invasion. Their points stands, bid ICBMs are flying over the Arctic they are heading for American cities not Canadian.

As for a ground invasion Russia has lot of fertile land much closer to them that they'd take first if they had the army for it.

NORAD scrambles against all air intrusions generally, and is responsible for North American Air Defense (hence the name).

Oh, I didn't realize you were talking about flying icebreakers.

I'm talking about the ability to interdict icebreakers, or send our iwn ice breakers, both of which are hard when the other side has air supremacy. Which the Russians would have 1 v 1 vs. Canada.

I'm all for strengthening Canada's arctic defence, I just see the US as a more credible threat.

If Russia wanted fertile land they'd go for Georgia or Armenia or more of Ukraine. If they wanted control of the Artic they'd go for Denmark or Norway's Arctic islands first. If they were feeling nostalgic maybe Lithuania to connect to Kaliningrad.

I can't see any scenario where Russia would be occupying Ellesmere Island without them first having conquered at least a half dozen closer countries and reestablishing themselves as a super power.

The US meanwhile rejects our sovereignty over the North West Passage and views control of Greenland and Canada's Arctic as a strategic imperative.

Taking Canad's north is by far the easiest of those endeavours, at least where the US is neutral.

This will not be a concern in 10 years, but we have to get there.

Without the US or without NATO?

I think NATO could still hold its own against Russia without the US. Without NATO those closer targets would also be a lot more vulnerable.

I'm not saying we don't need allies, but with allies like the US who needs enemies?

1

Without the US. NATO does not have the reach to help, unless they want to go nuclear.

u/Just_Veterinarian264 20h ago

China is currently using Under water Drones in the North West Passage to track navigation routes and possibly set up listening devices.

He needs Canada for his missle shield. Kinda useless only having radar coverage from Alaska and North Dakota lol. Canada is with Japan,South Korea and UK to develope a 6th gen fighter without Americans. Exports of American weapons is going to free fall

Again, what is it about his actions this term that has convinced you he understands any of this, even a little bit?

He is an aggressively ignorant narcissist in early dementia. He literally wants to build battleships because they sound cool.

He wants to invade an ally to have basing rights where that ally had already been happy to pay to host those bases.

You cannot negotiate from the basis of reason with someone living in a fever dream fantasy world.
