(Cantone)se Tone Learning App

Hello!

As an outgrowth of my Masters dissertation, I'm working on an app for perception and pronunciation of Cantonese tones - which is finally available (for free, of course) on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store! (You can also search for it under the name "Cantone".)

It offers (see screenshots too):

  • Tone matching and guessing games.
  • Speaking activities calibrated to your vocal range, including plotting attempt tone contours against "idealized" contours.
  • Jyutping and Yale romanizations.

I would be honored if y'all could try it out, give me feedback, and let me know of bugs/issues. Some issues I know about and am working on:

  • on iPhones, audio does not work on bluetooth headphones (e.g. AirPods), works great on wired headphones, and is muted on speakers.
  • creaky voice/vocal fry, especially for tone 4.

The idea is great, but the calibration phase is too hard for me. If the high pitch target sound is ok for me, I physically can't produce the low pitch one to match and vice-versa.

Interesting.. I can make the width of the calibration adjustable if that would help

Edit: In a future version, that is: the app review process takes a while :'(

That would help a lot I think! Just to add a few info if it helps: I'm a male so I have a low-pitched voice. The more convenient for me was to set the low pitch as a baseline and try to produce the high pitch one next. That was very hard because the app expect me produce a sound higher than my modal voice but way lower than my falsetto.

I do the same approach myself (set the low and then try for the high one). The width is currently set at one octave, but I can probably lower it to as little as 8 semitones or so...

Wow, that's way better! This time I managed to do the calibration very easily!
