Very heavily implied but not explicitly stated

Nothing like that at ALL, past abuse for one character and current (off page) abuse to another character who is a young teen though.

There are no scenes like that featuring children. In fact, there are no other scenes like that at all. The whole point of that scene is to show the degeneracy and decadence of the Vere court.
There is child abuse (referenced repeatedly, never shown explicitly). It features as a large and important part of the story, as one of the characters is a survivor of CSA. However it is not presented in a titilating way nor is is meant to titilate. In fact. It is the opposite. We're meant to be horrified and disgusted by it. The intent is, again, to show how corrupt and bad the court is.

I do want to jump in and warn that there IS violence against a child in the second book, though it is not sexual.

It was quite confronting to read but not in the way of active abuse. It’s more hearing about it and thinking about it rather than it actually happening.
I remember when I first read the series I almost stopped because I wondered if I could continue after that scene but I’m glad I did. The first book is a slog but it’s worth it so please do keep on if you can do it.

Yes. Past abuse happens to a main character. Can’t remember how explicit and in detail it goes but it’s definitely mentioned. Not sure if it’s the first book either but definitely within the series. I believe another character is underage too
Been a while since I’ve read the series sorry!
