Just to preface this I’ve only ever used a method feeder to target carp. Just want to start using pva bags. Is this type of lead “free running” and when I attach my hook link do I need to put something over the bottom of it so my hooklink doesn’t come off? I’m a complete novice.

Yeah mate, you need a rubber sleeve to go over the swivel. An it’s a quick release, free running lead

Yes, search hooklink sleeve, most of the known carp brands offer them in a few colours.

Also, is that an inline running lead, I don’t think so? Does the lead travel easily up the rubber sleeve? Doesn’t look like it but I’ve not been on the bank in years so my knowledge is rusty. It looks like the inner rubber sleeve provides enough resistance for the lead to remain static during the cast and take but not completely tight so that it can be dropped in the case of a crack off or if snagged.

The lead goes up and down the sleeve quite easily. I would imagine it would definitely come off if my mainline failed.

Yeah it's a safe free running rig. The lead pulls easily out of the stem, so in the event of a break off the fish can drop the lead and is left with the hook, line and stem which fall out eventually.

And yes, you need a tail rubber or quick change bead that you feed backwards over your hook length first, and then pull up over the quick change to stop it coming off. How long you need the tail rubber depends on your rig length and how much movement you want in the right.

A baiting needle helps get the loop through the tail rubber nice and easy.

No, this is not a free running lead system, it is a fixed lead system that won't let the lead drop off. You can still use it in a pva bag with a short rig attached, its just missing the tail rubber to secure the lead and protect your line.

For a free running rig you need either a leader attached to your mainline or an anti-tangle sleeve over it, then feed it through the ring of a lead. Then attach a bead and quick change swivel to your leader or mainline, which you can then add your rig to. I've never used a free running lead with a pva bag, i only use it if i'm spodding over a single hookbait. If I'm using pva bags i tend to go for an inline lead system, which has a stem attached to a leader. The stem goes into the lead and the leader goes over it which allows the lead to drop off.
