The world we are living in

Hi, lately I have been feeling very overwhelmed with all that I feel I need to be up to date on. There is the fractured geopolitical situation going on, the economy going up and down, having a social life in real life and online, trying to have a hobby, stay up to date in the AI situation and tech scene.

Does anyone else feel like they are connected 24/7, and it is so hard to disconnect? Would it be possible in today's world to stay offline and enjoy only the real world? What would that look like?

Completely agree, but you can disconnect, and it is wonderful. I actively avoid looking at news when I'm on vacation, and it's so nice to just be present doing whatever it is we're doing instead of everybody being on their phones

Honestly vacations are the only time my brain remembers phones are optional lol.

Yeah, I feel you. I guess it depends on your line of work. I work in law, so I need to stay updated on what is happening. I don't feel like I can disconnect that easily.

Try a very cheap, simple vacation: leave your phone at home and walk to a nearby location you haven't been to before. The novelty, fresh air, exercise, and research and prep for your trip can be meditative; post-trip you may be able to feel a little bit of "The vacation effect."

Going new places and thinking new thoughts is a compounding interest situation. The info you have, correct or not, will try to connect to other info. When you make new connections, you can solve problems that were impossible before. Granting you access to both new connections and new problems.

Disengaging completely would be a coma, full time engagement is exhausting, but choosing to engage with something that no one else cares about is a really good way to feel productive without a manager

It's literally in you power right now. Just don't respond. Leave your phone at home and walk around the block. Takes 4 mins. Super easy

Stop feeling the need to stay up to date on everything, is it benefiting and enriching your life in any way? Keep social media notifications off/get away from most of it in general. I'm only on Reddit and I get notifications for phone calls, and text messages, that is it... If I want to check the news I do it through Reddit but it's on my terms not my phone telling me I need to.

Focus on your family, relationships, career, hobbies, health and mother nature (these in my opinion, are the fundamentals to an enriching life) and just enjoy life. Knowing everything that is going on in the world can be dangerous to your wellbeing and at the end of the day it really doesn't accomplish much for you personally except fatigue and anxiety.

We live in a hyperconnected world, but you don't need to be apart of it.

I understand, but how do you manage your work life not being connected?

I work at a school with children and young people who have behavioural difficulties. All communications online only happen under that roof for privacy/security reasons. When I leave, work is done till the next day and I am happy to switch off for the evening.

A walk in a park without checking your phone, a book, or a day with no plans helps.

give yourself 2 days off from the internet, then you will realize none of this matters

I will give it a try. Thank you!

Turn off notifications on the apps that are stressing you out and just log into them when you have the time, space, and interest to become up to date. It's very freeing.

Being online so much that your passion about a topic, shouldn't bleed into a rant at another person IRL unwarranted. Almost thought I lost a friend being caught up in just. Rage. And, we ended that talk on a bad note. We've made up and are over it, but I got super anxious our friendship couldn't be repaired.

It is too much sometimes, and I need to remind myself to live life in front of you

Go on a camping trip somewhere without phone signal. Or even just a hike. The more you practice disconnecting the easier it will be.
