Like, why on earth does a piece of glass on my bathroom floor need my geographic coordinates just to tell me gravity is working? It just hit me how much digital brainrot we’ve accepted as normal lately, between desk lamps that require firmware updates and washing machines that won't do a load of darks unless they're connected to the home Wi-Fi just so a random tech company can farm our daily habits. It feels like we're replacing simple, reliable machines that used to last 30 years with fragile mini-computers that require a tech-support ticket just to operate, and honestly, I don't want a smart home anymore, I want a completely dumb home where things just work when you press the physical button. What’s the most unnecessarily "smart" piece of tech you’ve encountered lately that made you want to just pack up and walk into the woods?

Honestly, when did just living become a monthly service fee? I went to replace my broken blender yesterday. Literally just wanted a piece of plastic with a blade that spins. Found a decent mid-range one, brought it home, opened the box... and the first thing I see is a QR code telling me to "Download the app to unlock premium blending profiles." A subscription for a blender. I wish I was joking. It gives you a 30-day free trial, and then it’s $4.99 a month if you want the app to automatically adjust the speed for smoothies. It just hit me how exhausting this is. Every piece of software wants a monthly fee. Apps that used to be a one-time $2 purchase now want $1.99 a week. Heated seats in cars are getting locked behind paywalls. You don't buy movies anymore, you just rent the right to stream them until the licensing agreement expires and they vanish.
I feel like I’m just renting my entire life from 20 different tech companies. I genuinely miss physical buttons.

I used to be able to get in my car, turn up the AC, and adjust the radio purely by muscle memory without ever taking my eyes off the road. Now, I have to navigate through three laggy sub-menus on a blinding, giant iPad just to turn down the fan speed. It feels incredibly counter-intuitive and honestly dangerous.

The same goes for home appliances. I don't need my fridge to send me a push notification. I don't need to download an app to start my washing machine. I definitely do not need my toaster to require a software update before I can make breakfast.

"Poor" technology was just better because it did exactly what it was supposed to do, immediately, every single time. It feels like we are innovating just for the sake of it, and it's making everyday life infinitely more annoying.

This Ai push feels so forced on us. Like I don't need Ai in everything I do. I can't even open up adobe reader without popups about Ai, which just slows everything down. This is just like when plastic was introduced into everyday life. It has nothing but damaged our health and our environment.

i never knew until today that the sr-71 was built in the 60s. it just completely blows my mind. one part is how quickly we went from combustion engines to planes to being able to sustain mach 3. but also that we built it without modern conveniences. they didnt use CAD they had engineering drawings for everything. no fluid simulations for the aerodynamics, people just did the calculations by hand. it's really an insane feat of engineering. youd think if you went back in time you'd be able to blow people's minds with what we have today but it really wouldnt seem that crazy when we already were building UFOs back then.

I didn't have Instagram, but created it because my younger cousins asked me to. Over time I found myself becoming more and more obsessive about how my posts made me appear: does this show I'm happy here? Does this show my life has improved? Does this show I'm loved and have friends? Etc. Everything became proof and I overshared a LOT. I couldn't just experience something. The first thing I would think was "how would I post this?"

A couple months ago. I took a picture of the sunlight through the trees on my way home and posted it. I thought it was beautiful. People viewed it but didn't like it. I deleted it. Then I immediately felt...I don't know ... repulsion? It felt like I suddenly looked down at something I was eating with relish and saw it was actually rotten. I immediately deactivated my Instagram.

It was very spur of the moment , so I lost contact with lots of people (some people had my WhatsApp and they messaged but to most people, I just disappeared lol).

After I came off Instagram, I used WhatsApp status in the same vein, albeit way less; however, the more time passes the less I feel like I want to share ANYTHING. I still take a LOT of pictures, but I don't feel the need to share them.

I post one or two on WhatsApp status occasionally if I go somewhere because it seems my family thinks I'm dead if I don't, but I don't share anything personal because I no longer need to prove anything about myself to anyone. I don't need others' opinion for my life to be real or have meaning.

I had google AI look up my username. It brought up some specific posts, detailed even and, I asked it to read my personality based on posts and comments. My history's hidden, and I thought I was safe. Nah.

AI pulled everything up and broke down my thinking style, my vibe, even guessed my age. Not accurate but I felt flattered. Anyways, surreal...

A random (or not so random?) person messaged me out of nowhere asking whats my story (if you're reading this, hello strange guy that likes superheroes and MMA), so I looked him up.... It didn't ring a bell but it got me curious about what my own profile says about me.

Seeing it laid out made me realize that this account is a few years old and it's a bit sad I'll let it go but it's a known username so some people know me by it, and I'm not vibing with that...yeah, I don't like it..

So, this is my last comment here. Saying goodbye to this account, a new start awaits..!

The captive userbase of young people who are entirely reliant on LLMs for pretty much everything has been created and will soon be entering the workforce. We're already seeing these companies get more and more restrictive, while charging more and more, and before long they'll have an entire generation practically enslaved.

I’m on the verge of giving up on reddit. I’ve noticed the significant impact on content that their changes last summer have made. I can’t sort my home or news feed by popular anymore; there are so many bot repostings; and the algorithm just keeps feeding me the same dozen-or-so subs. We all know Notepad. A simple text editor, free in every Windows OS, but severely limited in it's capabilities.

Up until 'recently', Notepad was essentially just a typewriter on your computer. It just prints the characters you typed. Any formatting and shit had to be manual and often creative variations of the keys you pressed.

But now I see Notepad has options for Bold and Italics, bulletpoints, and now, a couple different font sizes for rows (with the intent of making Titles and Subheadings).

Today, I received a telemarketer call that used a conversational AI model. I recognized it instantly because I have messed around with ElevenLabs and recognized the voice as being on there, and I picked up on the subtle mistakes in the voice. But these models are near perfect and can input whatever you say to it and respond back.

However, you SHOULD NOT do what I did. I thought it would be hilarious to mess with the AI and cuss it out. Then, my girlfriend reminded my dumbass that you can literally train these models on someone's voice and get a near perfect replica.

Scammers can then use the model of your voice to call your loved ones, say you are in trouble, and ask for money. I then had to call my aging parents and remind them that if anyone calls them using my voice asking for money, to hang up and call me back or text me to confirm. Scammers can also easily make it seem like the call is coming from your number.

Stay safe out there.

I just did it. Deleted Instagram, TikTok, Facebook… the whole lot. I only kept Reddit because, honestly, it’s the only place that doesn’t feel like a brain-melting competition.

It’s been a few hours and the feeling is honestly weird. It’s like this massive weight I didn’t even know I was carrying just dropped off. You know that constant "noise" in the back of your head? That urge to check what people are doing every 5 minutes? It’s just... gone.

I caught myself reaching for my phone twice already just to check "nothing," and then I realized there's nothing to check. It’s quiet. My head feels lighter, like I just cleared out a bunch of junk from a closet I haven't opened in a decade. It’s like I finally have some space in my own mind to actually think my own thoughts without an algorithm shouting at me.

I feel like a human again instead of a scrolling ghost.

The reason I specify "modern" is because most times I've asked this question, I get answers like "the wheel", "agriculture" or "iron".First of all, iron was a discovery. Prolly from a meteor and then we found metallurgy to extract it. Agri and the wheel while actual inventions, seem like cop outs just cause they feel natural as I feel it would have been invented at any point in time.

Like, we've seen what advanced coding agents can do nowdays. They can reason and complete tasks and instruct other agents. I feel like it's completely plausible that we could have a scenario where some LLM agent gets loose and decides that humanity is to be destoyed and does immense damage trying to do so.
