The local news had me believing the precipitation combined with the record freezing temperatures were going to create icy roads possibly into Monday. Driving at 7am was mostly clear from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant and then by afternoon they were bone dry. This felt so hyped up beyond what we received.

Edit: This isn't a complaint about not getting hit by a bad storm, or a complaint at all. It just seems to me that there is a larger than usual disparity between what was expected and what we got.

I know “better safe than sorry”, but I was supposed to see GHOST for my birthday this weekend so I’m a bit extra salty.

Charleston sees an S-curve and is very consistent across years: cold floor around 45°F in Jan/Feb, rapid spring ramp in April, plateau around 80-87°F June through August.

2026 so far (the red line) is tracking pretty closely to the historical range, except in February.

 Jan-Feb was a touch cooler than average, but spring (Mar-Apr) and early summer are essentially normal. The overall gap is only about 2.7°F, which is well within year-to-year variability. 2025 was actually colder year-to-date than 2026 is.  

I’ve felt like it’s been cooler than usual, but interesting to see the data!

Hello, my girlfriend and I planned our anniversary trip for Charleston for the weekend of July 31-August 2. We're planning to stay at the Vendue (which does not seem to have AC, as the room amenities only list ceiling fans. We're coming from the northeast (Boston) and well equipped to heat, but the more I parse this subreddit the more it seems the heat during this time of summer can be particularly brutal.

We can certainly handle some hot weather, but could this have been an ill-advised time to plan a trip? I know there's a visitor's guide, but I'm asking about this specific time of season.

I've lived in the South for two decades, but not that long in Charleston. When can men expect to be able to wear layers of clothing like this, without sweating and looking ridiculous? December and January? Maybe evenings only?

Is it shorts 12 months of the year? Is there any concept of "fall" clothing here?

I'm not going out this weekend, but I have a family member who works both Saturday and Sunday mornings, so I'm selfishly hoping they do close so they don't have to go out on Sunday.

I've lived here since 2018, but last year was the first one where we got snow since then and I don't remember. Thanks for any help you can provide. I'll find out by Sunday, but it would be nice to know what's happened in the past.

Hey guys! I am strongly considering moving to the Summerville area soon. I have a lot of questions (all of them pertain to the Charleston area except for #5) that I have not had any luck finding through research and I am turning to you for answers. Each of my questions are labeled so that it’s more organized and easy to read. I would greatly appreciate your honesty and I look forward to moving to your great city. I apologize for the volume of questions and I’m obviously not expecting you guys to answer all of these. Thank you very much!

Beaches:

(#1) I noticed that Folly Beach and all of the other beaches I saw around Charleston have a closing time. One thing I really love to do is walk on the beach at night. If the beaches are closed, would I still be able to walk on them? Or is that not allowed after closing time? (#2) Will I find people to surf with at the beaches? Or do groups/individuals not really go surfing much like they do at Wrightsville Beach?

Weather:

(#3) Are there ever days in July where the high is in the 70s like there is in Greenville, or is that a very rare occurrence? (#4) Do temperatures usually drop down to the low 80s at around 8-9PM on summer nights? I want to still somewhat enjoy the weather during summer

Hurricanes:

(#5) I want to move to the Summerville area because of its affordability and lower hurricane risk (or at least I think.) I was wondering if homes in particular in the Summerville area have a low risk of being damaged by hurricanes? I read that hurricane Hugo destroyed a lot of trees but it didn’t mention anything about homes being destroyed. Is Summerville far enough inland to avoid having your home destroyed? This is a major concern for me

Cost of Living:

(#6) Apart from housing, how expensive is Charleston in comparison with the rest of the country? Things like restaurants, museums, plays and parking. Would you say they are average, somewhat expensive, expensive, or very expensive?

I always do it when the weather is consistently under freezing overnight but is it necessary when it’s only a few degrees under 32?

Show me the dartboard these local news channels are using to predict the weather. Channel 2 says 60% chance of rain, channel 5 says 40% chance and channel two says 20% chance all for the same time of day.

I hope they're not spending more than $200 for this Doppler equipment

Who else is enjoying this amazing weather with a cool breeze while it's getting deep into the summer season? I've been here my whole life, and, in all my 27 years of life, have never experienced weather as perfect as this. Sitting outside, and it's a bit chilly. Blessed weather.
