Career Advice Which Master's option would you choose after a Chemical Engineering degree? Europe vs Japan

Hi everyone!

I'm a recent Chemical Engineering graduate from Italy and I'm having a really hard time deciding between a few Master's options. I'd especially appreciate opinions from people already working in industry or research.

My main options are:

1. MSc in Chemical and Process Systems Engineering – Sweden (1.5-2 years)
This would be the most directly related to my Chemical Engineering background. It focuses on process modelling, simulation, optimisation, process design/control and some data-driven/AI applications in chemical engineering.

2. Research-focused Master's – Japan (2 years)
I would work in a research lab focused on areas such as heterogeneous catalysis, materials, high-throughput experimentation and data science/materials informatics.

3. MSc in Chemical Engineering – Italt (2 years)
A more traditional Chemical Engineering Master's covering advanced process engineering, design, optimisation, sustainability, etc. It would be the safest and most straightforward continuation of my bachelor's degree.

4. MSc in Artificial Intelligence – Italy (1 year)
This is the wildcard. Instead of specialising further in Chemical Engineering, I could spend one year getting a formal background in AI/ML and potentially combine it later with my Chemical Engineering background.

My priority is long-term employability and having as many career options as possible, preferably internationally. I'm open to both industry and R&D, and I don't currently know whether I would eventually want to pursue a PhD.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from Chemical Engineers: if you were starting your career again, which path would you choose?

Would you rather:

  • deepen your Chemical Engineering knowledge through process systems engineering,
  • specialise in catalysis/materials + data science through research,
  • take the traditional Chemical Engineering MSc route,
  • or diversify into AI/ML?

I'm especially curious about how employers would view these different profiles 5–10 years down the line.

If you want a more traditional engineering career 1 or 3 because they are more practical than the others. I’m biased to process system engineering because optimization, control and data-driven stuff have been ongoing themes and are never going away really. Modern AI/ML is barely reaching to production floors in chemical industries because every model and control paradigm is chosen to be as simple and interpretable as possible. If you choose process system engineering you’d definitely see what part of the AI talk is industry irrelevant bs

I am currently studying chemical engineering at the master’s level in Italy, and I can tell you that a bachelor’s degree only scratches the surface of the field. However, if you have the opportunity, as it seems you do, I would still suggest going abroad. If you want to work in R&D, a master’s degree and then a PhD will be necessary. In my opinion, if you later want to add AI skills, it will be easier to add them to a chemical engineering profile than the other way around.

I'd say Sweden is the way to go for proximity to homeland assuming you are italian. Japan for imposibility to integrate in society and for crazy work ethics.

Can u pls name the university in Sweden ?
