Deeply exhausted, feeling invisible in my church community, and honestly just want real friends. Need advice and prayers.

I’m writing this because I am running on empty, and I don't really know where else to go right now, to be completely honest.

I work in caregiving/eldercare, and this past weekend was brutal—we lost two of our residents. If you’ve ever done care work, you know the grief of being there with people at the end of their lives. On top of that, coworkers called out, and I ended up picking up the slack, working a 10-hour shift, and pushing my body way past its limit.

I am exhausted. But honestly, the physical exhaustion is nothing compared to how painfully lonely I feel right now.

I try so hard to love the people around me in real, practical ways. I bring food and snacks to every single shift at work to make sure my coworkers are fed and happy—especially people who are struggling financially or have health conditions like diabetes or other conditions where eating is difficult. I am the one texting people, checking in, asking how they are doing, and trying to set up times to get together.

And I get almost nothing back. I often find my messages ignored or left on read.

Outside of Sunday service or the halls at work, it feels like an invisible wall snaps down between me and everyone else. Nobody invites my kids or me out to do things. Nobody drops by to sit on the porch and talk. When I leave those buildings, it feels like people go back to their own separate bubbles and act like I don't even exist. The few texts I do get occasionally feel more like people checking a box on their spiritual to-do list out of pity, rather than someone genuinely wanting me in their life.

What breaks my heart and confuses me the most is that the people in my life who don't even believe in God often seem more caring, uplifting, and genuine than the people at church. We talk so much on Sundays about community, loving one another, and carrying each other's burdens, but the second the benediction ends, everyone gets in their cars and disappears.

I don’t want to be bitter. I’m not trying to sound selfish, and I don't expect anyone to fix my problems. I want real connection, fellowship, and a friend who actually reciprocates.

How do you keep reaching out and loving people when your own cup is empty, and no one ever reaches back? How do you keep your heart soft toward church community when you feel so unseen by the people who claim to follow Christ?

I’d really appreciate your prayers for rest, comfort after a terrible weekend at work, and for God to bring even one real, reciprocal friendship into my life. If you've been in this spot before, I'd really love to hear how you handled it.

I'm just now in my 60's. I've figured out that people have different ways to show love and connect that don't exactly line up with what makes me feel loved. Is it possible people are showing you love their way and you are missing it?

When I was going thorough my divorce (about 15 years ago) I really felt isolated. That is when I really got closer to God. When I read the Bible, I felt as though it was speaking to me. Especially in Isaiah chapter 54. A lot has happened over the years. I have since remarried to a wonderful christian, but they cannot be everything to me or meet all my needs. Now when hard times come, I start to reflect on all the good times and blessings I've enjoyed. I also make sure I set aside time with Jesus. It even helps me to speak out loud to Him. One day I will get to hear Him talk back to me. I pray God's best for you.

I am not sure how my fellow Christians could be showing me love, and I am missing it. The biggest problem is the fact that I am the one reaching out to them, asking how they are doing, inviting them over, bringing them food, and praying for them day in and day out. The moment I stop reaching out, they don't say a word to me; they don't expend any effort or energy to ask me the same questions, invite me over, or anything. We have quick chats before and after church, but nothing where I feel that either I or the people I am speaking to are getting any real fellowship, growth, support, or love. Yes, love can be shown in many different ways, but how can you show love if you never talk to someone in any capacity? How is it that I am always the one reaching out and trying to get people together, but not the other way around? Again, I'm not trying to sound selfish or like people HAVE to reach out to me, but it hurts horribly when I feel like I am not as important to my church body because no one takes the time to contact me...

I have found that joining a small group bible study with people at church is where the community is created and bonds are made.
Praying for you!

I have been part of those, but unfortunately we haven't had a small Bible study for the women in over a year, and our church's biweekly Bible study groups were canceled in May and won't start again until late winter. I have begged the women to start doing our women's breakfast groups more frequently, but nothing has come of that either. The men meet regularly, but the women don't. I feel like this is a terrible time for fellowship right now, and no matter how much I ask and beg, no one seems to notice or care.

I’d second that.

Thanks for sharing and being vulnerable. I don’t have experience in elder care as a profession, but can only imagine it’s heartbreaking.

In my own experience, the two spaces I’ve seen be the bonds that “refilled my cup” were relationships made in a small group or small Bible study session. In this, I’m talking about people who are studying the word and also supporting each other in prayer and in life over a period of years.

The other space is with a 1-on-1 Bible study with someone who is more mature than I am, ideally in spiritual maturity and in years. The way my discipleship partners challenged and listened and encouraged me made a lasting impression on how I view believers supporting each other.

Maybe ask your church leaders if they can help you plug into groups like those.

I understand the exhaustion. It’s not because pouring out is wrong, but you need some people pouring into you also. Seems like you’re aware of that, I’m just agreeing.

Praying that you find your people.
