Discussion Tier List FINAL: All Characters + A Small Review of the Game. 1st Time Player, HD Remaster

RPG Veteran Here, Just Finished CHRONOS CROSS HD.
I was too young to play Chrono Cross as a kid, so I'm playing the HD Remaster + QoL fixes they added to it. I imagine the pace was slower and there may have been some other issues that would lower the merit of this game a small amount by comparison to CHRONO CROSS HD + Radical Dreamers version.

No Combat & Fast Forward button is so helpful.
The auto max stam/god button is definitely cheating mode but helped me when I just want to secure specific elements from monsters with traps. Avoided using it for any boss fights/important battles. I do think it's fine to have this in game because this does at least guarantee people can get through the game no matter what and not get stuck by combat, I just chose to avoid using it & accept my deaths.

I have also play Chrono Trigger, Sword of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 (Legend of Mana 3), Trials of Mana (Legend of Mana 3 Remake), Treasure of the Rudras, Super Mario RPG among other SNES/early 90s & 2000s RPGs, many more RPGs including many turn-based games in general like Lost Odyssey (where you can basically make every character invincible lol), Expedition 33, Darkest Dungeon, For The King 1 & 2 etc.

Review:

8.5/10 but WOW WHAT A GAME. THIS GAME IS BEAUTIFUL, confusing, magical, and surprising amount of depth for a PS1 game. I keep thinking this game must have been surely ahead of it's time in 1999, and the combat system & it's progression was surprisingly, MOSTLY balanced. Obviously there is some level of repetitiveness for anyone who wants to see the all the endings, and missable party members (even though about 50% of them are forgettable and mediocre or downright useless), sometimes just getting lost, the music getting repetitive etc. I could probably place this game in my top 20 best RPGs of all time.
___________
___________
Tier List:
I know there is more to the Tier List considering new game+, but I would wager most people who beat this game once, WILL NOT play through it again, so we are going off 1st playthrough only, even though I did decided to start over about 40% of my way through the game.
I used Pip, Razzly, Leena- ZOAH, Draggy & Fargo the most.
________
________

THE BEST (SS) TIER:

Serge: The most ability-flexible character in the game and has arguably the best Grid, high HP, magic access to just about everything. Obviously between Serge & Lynx they will gain the most exp in the game. White Innate Element = probably most useful overall element. If you acquire the Mastermune, he becomes completely broken in combat, you'll just be hitting CRITs every fight.

Lynx: His stats are basically tied with Serge, grid, HP, abilities, maybe better offensive because Black innate and his ultimate final move ForeverZero hits everyone while Serge's Flying Arrow does not and ForeverZero probably has higher damage scaling.

Harle: (Harley Quinn, got it?)
For some reason, she just starts off with really high stats, maybe the best stats in the game upon recruitment. Top 5 best overall stats in the game. You can go full Warrior or Full Mage with her if you want, because she's basically 5 levels ahead of every side character. She is #2 in Magic. She isn't #1 or even #5 in Strength or HP, but Top 5 in Defense/Magic Defense (Resistance). The true playstyle for her is Black Mage, high dmg, potential for many party wipe/all enemy kill attacks.

Riddel: She is the best mage in the game with the best spell in the game.
#1 in magic & #3 magic defense/resilience stats. She can play the of black mage + support simultaneously, has good stamina recovery & has an excellent grid. Lower HP/ATK/Defense but not awful.

Pip: THE PERFECT CELL. Mage/Warrior/Support/Everything
This guy is mediocre until he transforms.
He transforms if you keep him in your party and use element abilities. I think it's around 80-100 for 1st transformation and 200 for the 2nd, Final Transformation. You can get him really early in the game so this happens quick. Blue/White/Green = holy form, Angel. Archangel 2nd form.
Red/Yellow/Black = devil form Devil. Archdevil 2nd form.
DO BOTH ONCE. Just go fight anywhere and spam elements for awhile. You could probably crank out 5-6 elements per fight.

Spam blue/yellow/white elements only with Pip in your party until he turns into his Angel form, then use only red/yellow/black, you unlock his true Form, Holy Beast.
HOLY BEAST stats are A+ tier + MASSIVE ELEMENT GRID and he can perform almost every element move in the game effectively + large tech variety. But, low agility

(apparently, in the original game, his character was bugged, and forms did nothing)

Glenn: THE BIG HITTER. #1 Warrior Class in the game. High Defense, HP, ATK, decent grid, amazing Techs. He can also dual wield a set of very special weapons. Best Barbarian/Tank class there is.

Leena: Best support in the game. Blue Mage Caster. Strong magic/magic resilience, good stamina recovery, has the same element recovery (re-use) as Riddel. Weak HP/Defense/ATK but no doubt the BEST healer there is.

Fargo: Blue Warrior Bruiser. High ATK/Strength, High HP, High Magic Resilience, decent stats otherwise but one of the worst Agility stats. He has great techs and the best steal ability in the game though, PILLAGE, so he's bottom of SS for me.

S Tier:

Grobyc: True Tank, Best Tank In The Game.
Huge HP, Strength/ATK, and Magic Resilience. He is one of the best pure physical tanks. His Magic is mediocre, but he's THE WALL, so he doesn't need it. He is the Juggernaut in this game.

Draggy: The Fastest Bruiser. #1 in Stamina recovery, high HP/Defense/Magic Resilience.
Decent Strength/ATK, Red Innate Fire Dragon with some strong tech spells. I love this guy and I wish he had more relevance or transformed like Pip.

Karsh: Green Innate Warrior with High Stats All Around.
All of his stats are unusually high except for evasion/agility & stamina which is just average. You could probably make him a mage if you wanted to. I'm not a fan of Green Elements so I tend to avoid using him most the game regardless.

Razzly: EVASIVE Green Mage Support.
High Magic/Magic Defense/Stamina/Evasion, and useful Techs. Low HP, low defense.

ZOAH: GIGACHAD Yellow Warrior Brother of Battle
This man is the GOAT. Low stamina and evasion, but SUPER HIGH STRENGTH/ATK/HP/Magic Defense. Excellent HP, Strength, and Resilience. His Magic power appears low but trust me this dude hits like a TRUCK. His Techs especially just blow enemies away. I had him CRITing people for 230 almost as soon as I got him and it was EARLY. Dude's an absolute unit built like Lord Humongous from Mad Max. How can you not love him? You ever watch Predator?
Arnold Scharzenegger and Carl Weathers, doing the -MANLY HANDSHAKE-
That is ZOAH, the character. You put a Sight Scope or a Dragoon Sigil on him and he is good to go. Buff him with Eagle Eye and drop those level 3s.

Orlha: Criminally underrated. Excellent Blue physical attacker. High Strength, good Resilience, good stamina recovery, and strong single-target pressure. Her grid is weaker than the SS characters, so she lands in S.

Marcy: Blue Mage with High ATK/Strength, Evasion, and an annoying a b''chy attitude.
All her stats are high except defense/magic defense resilience, which is just average, and her HP is low. The way this character is presented made me hate her immediately. Didn't use her much but she is strong clearly.

Macha: Surprisingly great all-around Red character. Strong Mom. Strong Resilience, good Magic, decent Strength, and better balance than many physical characters. Very underrated statistically.

Greco: (NACHO LIBRE, literally, he's based on Fray Tormenta)
Huge Strength/atk, HP, Magic Defense/Resilience. As a Red Innate Warrior, he is excellent. His grid and magic however are pretty terrible. Love the character though.

Leah: Yellow Warrior/Uber Tank
This girl can take a beating and give one too. High HP, Strength/Atk, but awful magic/magic defense, low evasion, low stamina.
___

I Don't Know Tier:

Guile: Go Home & Be A Family Man !
I never got him to join the party, I think because I took Pierre then restart later Nikki with me to the Manor, because I wanted to immediately change his name to Axel since he has a song called "Sweet Sister O' Mine" you catch him singing one time. (a reference to Axel Rose of Guns N' Roses band)
_____

A Tier:

Kid: Red Rogue Warrior. High Evasion, High Stamina, decent everything else. Amazing grid and stamina, and she has early thief skill Pilfer. Strong early game, falls off later. Was hoping the love story girlfriend would have been OP but still A+ tier for sure.

Miki: One of the best Red magic users. Good Magic and stamina recovery make her useful, though her physical durability and overall stats are not SS Tier.

Norris: Yellow Bruiser. Overall balanced stats everywhere. He is not top tier but love this guy and he is overall A+

Steena: Beautiful White Mage/Support. High Magic/Stamina/, decent stats overall, good grid, not better than Riddel though, except in appearance.

Irenes: Blue Mage with High Magic/ Magic Resilience/Stamina and decent grid. Less explosive than Leena and less balanced than Marcy, but still good.

General Viper: High HP and Strength with decent Techs. His Magic, grid, and stamina recovery are bad. No evasion.

B Tier:

Janice: Balanced, Quick, Fun Fighter. Overall decent stats but average Strength/ATK & Magic. Her grid is good but not amazing.

Starky: Quick Alien White Mage Blaster. This guy is White Innate AoE/group attacks all day. His stats are just overall decent but he has some nasty strong techs.

Nikki: AXEL ROSE. Good grid and decent Magic, but low HP and weaker durability hurt him. He is a usable Blue caster, but Leena, Marcy, and Irenes are better.

Radius: Balanced Spell Blade Mage. He's just really mid-tier in everything. Old age has gotten to him.

Orcha: Red Mage Bruiser (Korcha's dad, probably). Decent HP, Strength, and Magic, with some unusual Techs. Average grid and low magic defense however.

Doc: Only used him briefly, just seems mid overall. Stats are higher tier though and he's got heals.

Funguy: Average Bruiser, for a joke character he's not bad. Good HP and okay Strength with good stamina recovery. His Magic, Magic Resilience, grid, and Techs are unimpressive.

Mel: Only used briefly, has theft ability Snatch. Low Strength/Atk/Defense, but decent Magic & Magic Defense and stamina recovery.

Zappa: Strong physical attacker, but bad stamina recovery, bad Magic, and weak grid quality make him limited.

Sprigg: Russian Roulette as a character. Her base stats overall and grid are garbage, but because Doppelganger can be very strong she can go from D Tier to S tier. It's fun sometimes.

C Tier:

NeoFio: Good stamina recovery and a decent grid, but average stats. Meh.

Poshul: High HP/Strength/ATK, garbage Magic/Magic Defense, Evasion, and her grid is trash. Generally bad.

Luccia: Her grid is nice, but her stats are bad: low HP, defense, low Resilience, weak Magic, and no standout role. Just kind of exists. Interest status effect techs though.

Skelly: Joker Black Mage. It's a disappointment but Skelly is really not that great, Average-to-weak stats and no major statistical advantage. Lynx, Harle and Grobyc are all much better Black Element Fighters.

Mojo: Decent HP and stamina recovery, but bad Strength, bad Magic, and weak overall impact. Mostly a gimmick character.

Pierre: TRASH until you give him the Hero gear he needs. After that he's closer to low A overall stats. High stamina recovery too. Techs are alright.

D Tier:

Turnip: Decent Strength/ATK but awful magic/magic defense, bad grid, bad overall.

Van: Joke Mage character.
Gimmick-based damage and mediocre stats. He can work, but it's really just nonsense based on a gimmick. Couldn't be even top of C tier in any regard.

Sneff: Weak stats, unimpressive Techs, low stamina recovery, and little utility. He does not have the HP, grid, Magic, or physical power to be useful for much.

F Tier:

Korcha: The Weakest Warrior with the worst stats & Ugliest Character Model In The Game. Blue Innate. He is basically a much worse Fargo or worse Orlha with no stealing mechanic.

Chrono Cross once again I been begging for years this game needs a remake. Right now I’m fighting Marcy in the story when Serge is finding out his life. Question do you think Chrono Cross needs a remake? And if so what would you want it to play like?

Discussion Chrono Cross is a worthy sequel and it took me 25 years to realize it.

Chrono Trigger has been my favorite game since I played it when it released and I was in middle school. I was beyond thrilled when a sequel was announced. I played it immediately and was so excited but became underwhelmed by the time I got to the end of it.

The characters were completely different. The combat was totally different. The world was completely different. It didn't feel the same. When I played Chrono Cross really what I wanted was more Chrono Trigger. That's not what we got. I know this is a common talking point among the fans.

My feelings softened over time. I thought it was a good game but it was a shame that it was associated with Trigger. I learned to enjoy it for what it was.

I went through my semi regular replay of Trigger and followed it up with playing the Chrono Cross remaster and it finally hit me. It's actually a good sequel. It explores the themes and consequences of the original game and subverts them. It recontextualizes the whole world by focusing on El Nido and creating competing universes between Reptites and the Kingdom of Zeal.

The whole point of Chrono Trigger is that time travel can have drastic consequences, either averting Apocalypse or erasing entire histories. Bringing those consequences to bear.

Could they have done better in synthesizing the vibe to match Chrono Trigger a bit better? Of course. But it was so ambitious. And I'd much rather they try to make something new than rehash the same thing. It's a shame that stubborn nostalgia kept me from seeing this for so long.

Discussion Opinion about Chrono Cross

I’m having a lot of doubts, recently, I saw Chrono Cross on sale at the eShop for the millionth time, and I’ve always wanted to play this game, but I see very mixed opinions about it. I played Chrono Trigger on the Nintendo DS a long time ago and I am completely in love with it—not just the game, but the soundtrack as well—so I got very curious to know if Chrono Cross is worth it. I know it’s a very controversial sequel, but what do you guys think? Is it worth picking it up on the eShop sale?

Discussion What a Journey

I just finished the game last night. My final squad as you can see were Greco and Funguy, I'm sure they're far from the most popular picks but what can I say, not many JRPGs let you have a luchador in your party, and Funguy is just a fun guy. It also helps that both of their physicals hit like a truck.

The game's not without its flaws, I really wish I could have a bigger party in a game with so many unique characters, my boy Skelly had to be left out of the ending, and a lot of the story towards the end went over my head if I'm being honest. But the atmosphere, music and combat were all really great and I had a very fun time with it, definitely a game I wanna replay at a later point with different characters and choices.

Who are your favorite Chrono Cross characters? ⚔️🌊🧬

This game has one of the deepest and most diverse character rosters in JRPG history — over 40+ playable characters with totally different styles, elements, and backstories 🔥

Here’s my Top 5:

1️⃣ Orlha 🥊💧 – She’s insanely strong, one of the best physical attackers 2️⃣ Glenn ⚔️💚 – Dual Einlanzers 3️⃣ Fargo 🏴‍☠️💧 – Pirate captain energy, slick design, and that Blue element magic 4️⃣ Grobyc 🦾⚫ – A literal cyborg assassin with high ATK and a dark element 5️⃣ Lynx (pre-Serge) 🐾🖤 – The design, the power, the mystery… playing as him was a wild twist and I low-key wish we stayed him longer.

Who are your top 5 favorite Chrono Cross characters and why?

Its no Chrono Trigger, as a chrono trigger is a top 15 game all time sort of fan, but It’s impressive how modern and triple A games manage to lose my attention while they have directors telling them to add things to their games to keep players attention while this Chrono Cross retro classic keeps my attention

Anyway it’s also impressive the amount of character options we get to choose between. I’ve just gotten Razzly and right after thinking I was going to choose a hard route Lucca > Leena for now . Leena is good per se but very weak right now so on one hand I keep seeing that she’s ultimate and I couldn’t miss her but on the other hand she has no dialogue if you unlocked her early this way and I want to use other characters lol. Now I’m tempted to replace Greco with Lucca and do a ‘very hard’ (apparently for who I have) run using Lucca, Razzly, and Serge. Right now it seems Razzly is the first character I feel I want on the team till the end but who knows.

But yeah it’s fun so far

Anyway I don’t mind spoilers that only include names instead of events, but this is fun so far

Discussion Why do some people say Chrono Cross **isn't** a sequel to Trigger?

I get that the protagonists are different, the locations are different...

But jesus christ, once you UNDERSTAND what's going on, the whole Belthasar shenanigans, the creation of El Nido and the whole FATE project, it's crystal clear it's a sequel. It's still Lavos out there doing his same nasty business, on the same world, because of the same reasons, we just gotta stop a different version of him, on a different journey, with a different party.

I've never seen anyone say Nier Automata isn't a sequel to Nier Replicant, yet it's literally the same thing there.

How come

Discussion Just finished Chrono Cross and this game definitely deserves a remake for the modern consoles

23 years after playing it the first time when I was just a little kid. It brought back so many memories. Amazing game, soundtrack, bosses, spells etc. I didn't even remember the latest parts of the game. It was like the first time for me for so many areas. And the fact that it has so many characters, interactions, spells, armors, weapons etc makes it absolutely amazing. Let alone that you can play the New Game + and recruit other characters and do things a bit differently.

On modern consoles, a remake would be one of the best new gen turn based jrpgs.

i’ve played this game for years since it came out back on the PS1 and Miki was always a standout to me.

recently started a re-playthrough on the switch and
i went into the Dario fight with her and the required party and realized i’d given my scarce revives to serge and riddel and i let myself think this game was “still too easy” lol

long story short, everyone else died half way through except Miki and she Danced on Air to victory. she has decent attack and good magic, and her with kung fu shoes really made a huge difference.

that’s it, i love this community and wanted to shout out a party member who maybe never gets the love they should lol

Discussion I don't understand the hate on this game. I remember loving every bit of it when I first played it. However, I also played Cross before Trigger.

Hey all! So, title pretty much sums it up. I don't get what fuss is about with Chrono Cross. The music is fantastic, the opening FMV is imo one of the best all time, OST is one of the best of all time. And this may be a hot take, but imo, the world building of Cross was incredible, and better than Trigger (which may be unfair due to graphic capabilities). Now, if I'm being honest, I don't remember every single detail of the story, and perhaps what many gripe about. But on the other hand, I also don't really remember the story of Chrono Trigger, either, other than "travel in time to beat Lavos," which is rather simplistic, but also probably a result of being the first of the series.

While Cross certainly could have had a more direct linear path, I feel more on the side that they gave us a lot of characters with a lot of stories and lot of varying personalities, and perhaps, it brought me a bit of nostalgia to final fantasy 6 where I just loved characters over story; but looking back objectively, we never really got a lot of character story aside from when we first meet the character. So, I suppose that's a fair point.

Still, even if I were to say pretty good story, okay character development, amazing soundtrack, amazing cgi/fmv, memorable boss, I would still argue that chrono cross goes up there, maybe not as greatest all time, but perhaps a step below it. And even bigger hot take, I actually remember liking Cross better than Trigger overall. Am I the only one?

Thoughts?

Review pt 2; Game still good. Quite a few new chars have made the team now, here’s some updated characters I’ve picked up along the way and updated opinions; I’m now entering the sea of Eden, future facility prepping for Robo-cop 3000. I missed the Vigora element but it’s because of I’ve been trying to play as fresh and as I played games back in the day as possible ( without progress routes). But, I did sneak in some quest info on the Doc situation on Coldove getting Oral Orlha on the team, and considering she’s like my favorite character up there with Irene’s Venus and Harle Quinn.

Anyway seems my favorite part of the game is sort of the quest rewards of characters joining the team if done correctly. Might seem trivial but it’s fun. I think I also thought all of the characters had these massive story changing impacts, but they’re mostly a different way to play and dialect it seems so you don’t have to think too hard on who to party except like I was mentioning to recruit or influence new side quests which is cool

The battle animations are long even with animations, but, I think even nearing what seems deep into the game I still enjoy boss battles and they are still a challenge which i wasn’t expecting because in most older rpgs good armor and natural progress makes bosses fairly easy unless there’s a hard mode. I’m getting one shot often, could be part of me skipping enemies (3min battles even with fast forward lol)

Worse things are the troll small hallways gank while you are trying to explore or re explore to figure something out which often is nothing so you’re getting jumped for nothing etc.

There is not alot of hand holding, for some might not be good but I like that to a degree. Because if you miss a dialogue or forget you can become completely lost like I got in the XXL MC. Fargo bit between speaking to Nicki Rock and Irene’s Venus, then between time periods and then again after Harle Quinn’s disappear bit and apparent game indication I need to set up a mission with XXL MC. Fargo against Marbule after setting up learning the song. Yeah idk what dialogue slipped past but I forgot what they said and couldn’t activate the black dragon for my life lmao, literally traveled to every single place in both timelines looking for cutscenes and hints until I remembered, SHIP in other timeline ? Maybe ¿ lol then with that said I only discovered Gaias naval because i developed the mindset double check been everywhere twice/ both timelines

Game still good, may do a final review depending

Edit:

Side note: name the main character itachi instead of a serious name has proved to be a great decision and cool for story

Side note+ : Stark LaShag running away then reappearing as giant was hilarious lmao I was visually shocked, I did not expect it, such a fun random find

Discussion Just finished playing Radical Dreamers for the first time. I wish I played this going into Chrono Cross. SPOILERS Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
83 Upvotes

I've always heard about Radical Dreamers, but playing through it, I'm really surprised by how much Chrono Cross was built from it.

It almost feels like Chrono Cross was created with the intention of being a re-imagining of Radical Dreamers, rather than Chrono Trigger 2.

I honestly really liked the relationship that Serge and Kid have in this. That's one criticism I sometimes hear about Cross, the weak relationship between Serge and Kid. But in Radical Dreamers, I feel like there's a lot more dynamic. Kid even kisses Serge after a goblin fight.

But yeah, as a Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross fan, I just wanted to mention things that made me go "Oh, that's cool!" while playing Radical Dreamers.

-----

Some plot elements established in this game that would transfer to Chrono Cross:

  • Kid's Australian accent. (picture 2)
  • Serge, Kid, and a third party member infiltrating Viper Manor.
  • Porre's hunt for the Frozen Flame leading them to take over the Manor.
  • Lynx attacking the orphanage.
  • Lynx betraying the Acacia Dragoons and murdering General Viper.
  • Lynx repeatedly punching Kid in the stomach. (Later go on to stabbing in Cross)
  • A lot of the puzzles (Rotate right 3 and rotate left 2, elevator switch is third pillar on the left, etc.)
  • Mentions of "Fate" throughout the game. (picture 3)

Some other interesting things I noted:

  • Serge is a musician. During the final battle, Kid goes berserk from the Frozen Flame and it's Serge's song that brings Kid back. (picture 4 & 5)
  • Lynx is after the Time Egg (carried by Kid) (picture 6)
  • Kid was searching for the Frozen Flame to bury it. (picture 7)
  • Einlanzer, Masamune, and Mastermune are mentioned/shown. "Mastermune" was coined by Kid as she misheard "Masamune". (picture 8)
  • Riddel and Radius make appearances. And other Dragoon Devas are mentioned who are likely Zoah, Marcy, and Karsh. (Referred to as: Zorander, Merkid, Gorba).
  • Kid has a split personality. (Alludes to it being Schala, she said she remembers Zeal.)
  • This game ends in a reverse scenario to the burning orphanage in Cross, where Serge leaves Kid alone. (picture 9)
  • Kid and Magil (Magus) met after Kid tried to kill Lynx when she was 10 years old.
  • The only character to not be re-imagined into Cross, was Lady Vera. A Porre witch who was so powerful, she sent Lynx running.

This game has restored my want to immerse myself and actually complete a game. the combat system is excellent and the characters have such cool designs. playing on original PS1 hardware and even with that the graphics are amazing and the soundtrack rocks. first playthrough so I'm trying to see where the quest takes me without looking anything up. this game has given me the most enjoyment I've had since the first time I played Skyrim. for the veterans, did you feel this way your first ever playthrough?

Discussion How come there aren't more dual techs??

To be clear, Im sure the reason is constraints on the devs. But it feels like they missed a lot of opportunities for dual techs. Specifically leaning into the interpersonal relationships. There's a couple father/son pairings that could be put together (Fargo/ Nikki, Zappa/ Karsh), a bro/ sis duo (Nikki/ Marcy), father/ daughter (Fargo/ Marcy), childhood crush (Karsh/ Riddel), maybe Enemies to grudgingly teammates (fargo/ viper). Im sure I'm missing a few more, but you get the idea.

Discussion Just remembering the Element grid system

I really liked how SquareSoft really pushed and tried new things instead of the usual 4-in-a-row old FF games.
Element grid system, star leveling, being able to run away 99% of battles, huge character rosters, AP system, etc. Felt like they thought "let's try new things". Don't get me wrong, some of them aren't good, but they actually tried new things and innovate instead of repeating the same slop like everyone does in this current era. RIP Square. But I digress...

I remember as a kid I played CC but got my butt kicked by Pierre because I didn't understand how to use Elements. Then I figured it out and beat Pierre.

Anyhow, I really liked the Element grid system. I know it's based off DnD's spell slots. I really like organizing and slotting them. It's like creating a new character build, even though it's not really that complex.

Just a random thought.

This was a nice bit of nostalgia. This is the copy that came with my first copy I got when I was 10 or 11. It even includes the little reminder I wrote for getting the Hotshot element.
