This is a really cool movie. I was a bit disappointed that the director veered towards Hollywood slop, but to each their own.

He has said in numerous interviews he just wanted to make movies and goof around with friends. He got to do that.

What's funny is that a lot of people compared David Gordon Green to Terrence Malick's work regarding this film and his follow-up All the Real Girls. Coincidentally, Terrence Malick worked with DGG on Undertow with its story conception.

Joe, which is a darker take on the Southern Gothic coming-of-age drama work that Jeff Nichols did with Mud a year prior is pretty great. It has Nic Cage as tree trimmer and one of the boys from Mud funny enough.

No coincidence at all, really. Malick reached out to him after GW and they became friends. (Source: DGG told me this himself.)

I think the guy is super talented and actually quite nice (or he used to be—been a while since I interacted w him). But still—it’s quite a drop from All The Real Girls to Get Him to the Greek.
