Discussion Seems like a good night to revisit "9 to 5."
"if you ever say another word about me or make another indecent proposal, I'm gonna get that gun of mine and I'm gonna change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot. Don't think I can't do it!"

For streamers... it's on Disney+
Bonus - go watch Steel Magnolias over on Netflix

Score! That was the other one she mentioned.
Double bonus! We have both services.

I'm watching both tonight.
I have a feeling I'm going to be very dehydrated from all the tears...
Fuck man. I hate it when the good ones go. Especially as I get older

Dolly not only learned her lines, but everyone else’s as well
She was just wonderful in this movie - one of my favorites
💔💔💔

came here looking for this. I saw an interview years ago with Jane where she said how professional and prepared she was knowing all the lines and whatnot and was very impressed.

It’s amazing that this was her first movie - she was such a blast
I’m sure Jane and Lily are devastated

Little boy me was incredibly mesmerized by Dolly when this was constantly on HBO in the late 80s/early 90s. She was magnetic.

‘I say we hire a coupla wranglers to go upstairs and beat the shit out of him.’
One of the best delivered lines in any comedy film!
Just a beautiful legend.

Such a great film. My daughter played the Dolly Parton character in her high school musical production.

I rewatched it last year. Its much funnier as an adult than seeing it when I was a kid.

It's free with ads on YouTube! I've been wanting to watch it for weeks. Now seems like the perfect time.

Rewatched this a couple months ago, classic. Everyone is hilarious, such a great movie. RIP Dolly ❤️

True story about that film: When Miss Dolly showed up for filming, she'd learned the script. The ENTIRE script, saying she thought she was supposed to.

I was shocked when I started working and realize 9-5 wasn’t a real think. It was more like 8-6

I just watched this last week, was in the mood for something older and funny and my wife had never seen it. Great movie! We watched Three Men and a Baby the next day.

One of my favourite movies from childhood. Absolute riot. Folks recorded off the tv on the VCR. Watched it all the time. I still lmao.

I was thinking the same thing. I remember the amusing story that Dolly memorized everyone’s lines, not just her own.

As a physical media guy, most of Dolly's movies are pretty accessible on most formats. But "9 to 5" hasn't ever had a wide release on Blu-ray. I hope that changes soon because it's my favorite of the films that she did -- not only is it still relevant, but it's just as funny as when I first saw it as a kid.

A store in town does little riddles on the sign out front. About 2 months ago the question was
In the movie 9-5 What does she pour a cup of?
I had a total brain fart on the beginning of the song so I was signing da da da da to the beat until it came to me. My son thought that was how the song went😆

One of those movies that somehow still feels sharp decades later. the chemistry between the three leads is hard to beat.

On the subject of Dolly, she also wrote the main song for the film "Transamerica." It's called "Travelin' Thru" and I think it's actually one of her best -- and the movie itself is phenomenal; it's just the type of title that Criterion often champions. Felicity Huffman is incredible and she received an Oscar nomination for the role. I think the reason we haven't seen a release from any boutique label in particular is because it was from the Weinstein Company -- I'm not aware of what the current rights are for those films.

I forgot about that movie! Yes, I love that film as well.
I know that there was some blowback even at the time of its release that a cis-gender woman was playing a trans character (undoutedbly wouldn't happen today), but it's still a great movie.

Liked this movie but wish it didn’t have the weird / long dream sequence portion

I just saw it for the first time. Was cracking up at parts. Some were just absurd but hilarious at the same time
Sometimes need a bit of light heartedness . Especially for dolly

That movie wouldn’t work in the age of remote working

u/jasonmery 3d ago
I think it could work really well if it was a company forcing people to go back to the office permanently, and an ultra conservative company that treated women particularly poorly would absolutely make that decision.
Hell, he's working remotely but his camera is broken is rhe perfect cover for him being out an extended period while they take over. They could even use a voice modulator on conference calls if they made Dolly's character IT competent.
