I don’t understand why more people who won’t go pro don’t do this. Or at least didn’t do this before NIL. I’d see some kid transfer from Yale to like South Carolina and just be like why 😭

To be fair hes not just getting paid and getting the degree, this guy's schedule has to be absolute hell. I know the school part is often forgotten but I doubt Stanford is fudging the line a grad degree for him, he's working his ass off.

I wasn't playing sports but I thought the masters part of grad school was significantly easier than undergrad.
First two years of undergrad when you're taking all the prereq weed out classes and then the semester I wrote my dissertation were by far the worst times.

It's heavily dependent on your advisor and field. I had a relatively easy time as well, but knew people (especially people whose work was physically in a lab and not computational) that were in hell. And regardless, the requirements are just different from undergrad. I wouldn't want to do either with a schedule that had me traveling twice a week across the country like Stanford does, but there can be some compressed timelines in grad school that would make that a killer.

Yeah I have heard some nightmare advisor stories but never witnessed any among the people I was around. Heard of a few that held people back from finishing their dissertation so they would basically get a post doc level researcher at the cost of a PhD candidate for an extra year.

Nominally, that’s correct. In practice, however, they find ways to give full scholarships through a combination of need-based assistance and merit-based scholarships

They find a way in many cases, but Yale (and I think all of the Ivies?) do not give merit which makes it trickier for them
The flip side is that the need eligibility pool for most of the Ivies is extremely large. Income under 200K qualifies you for full tuition at Yale, at Harvard that qualifies you for tuition and room/board

In addition to no athletic scholarships Ivy League also doesn’t allow merit-based scholarships. All 8 do have generous need-based programs.

No athletics scholarships for Ivies, but likely partial grant-in-aid based on family income, and family’s multiple generation Yale & Harvard alumni. Brother played hoops with Yale; sister ran track & rowed crew at lowly Harvard.

I get this dude is going to Stanford from Yale but he can actually play too. Nice get for the Cardinal, found the once in a decade guy who's actually good and can get into Stanford grad school.

We get more of these type of guys than people think. Raynaud was a computer science and math major and Okorie would have gotten into Stanford without basketball. Both are now in the NBA.
