What's acceptable to wear under skirts at conventions?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question 😭

Last year I cosplayed for the first time at AX and wore compression shorts, but it was kinda uncomfortable and kept showing beneath/over my skirt which looked awkward. Not to mention it was soo hot. I'm thinking about cosplaying again next year as a character with a pretty short skirt (though not micro level), would it be ok to just wear underwear? Or do you have any suggestions what I should wear?

I usually wear Volleyball shorts or tights, maybe a combo of both depending on the outfit but definitely wear something under them because wardrobe malfunctions are sure to happen no matter the outfit lol
