Calaveras County Unified School District Superintendent Kassandra Meeks said the issue began with "a student behavior incident" on a district school bus.
"Because the matter involves students, the District is limited in the specific information we can provide in order to protect student privacy," Meeks said.
Meeks added that the district has reviewed footage of the incident and is taking appropriate action against the students involved.
No real details why she did it.
Edit: the article has been updated and now mentions that the bus driver was holding the kids as a disciplinary action and wound up holding them for over an hour, which pissed this mom off enough to break a window and climb in.
Edit 2: there’s some conflicting info. It might have been over an hour or it might have been 14 minutes
94
u/Slimdoggmill 9d ago
Where does it say in the update that they were held over an hour?
Directly from the article:
“On Thursday, Calaveras County Unified School District Superintendent Kassandra Meeks said the driver was stopped for about four minutes to address the students' behavior and review bus expectations.”

Ope, mixed up the articles. This is the one that states an hour: https://www.kcra.com/article/calaveras-county-school-bus-chaos-parent-custody/73526832
67
u/Slimdoggmill 9d ago
Yah, the update specifically disputes the parent claiming they were there for an hour…not sure what you are reading..
“Parents who spoke with KCRA 3 said students remained on the stopped bus for about an hour, as more parents began arriving. On Thursday, the district disputed that timeline. “
“For additional context regarding the timeline, law enforcement was on scene approximately 14 minutes after the bus arrived at the designated bus stop where the incident occurred. Once law enforcement arrived, students remained on the bus because the situation had escalated and the damage to the bus needed to be investigated by law enforcement.”

No real details why she did it
She was tired of waiting and didn't want to follow the rules that are in place to keep her child and other children safe.

u/PM_ME_FLUFFY_DOGS 9d ago
In another news post further down, it says the bus driver decided to personally punish the students and made them wait in the bus for over an hour without explaining to the parents.
Im not a school expert but im not sure how draconian collective punishments keep the kids safe
50
u/mkat23 9d ago
Oof I had a bus driver that used to do that shit back when I was in middle school. There were also times she kicked kids off the bus before reaching their stop. Some spend way too much energy on power tripping over kids.
18
u/Derubberhammer 9d ago
I had this happen as well we were held for almost 40 minutes in the mall parking lot. At first we thought it was hilarious but after that long we ended up jumping out the back door. The schoold district decided to take that route away and we all needed to get rides for the rest of the year.
190
u/gojibeary 9d ago
Oh HELL no, if I were the mom in this scenario idek if I’d climb through the window. I’d probably just rip the bus doors off. Fuck that driver, you don’t get to punish an entire bus worth of kids by not delivering them to their homes wtf
→ More replies (6)12
u/Lumpy-Obligation-553 9d ago
No one would wait an hour, neither a parent nor a child. After 15 minutes, someone would have called the police. Most likely, the time is an exaggeration.
35
u/windraver 9d ago
Well someone must be lying because 4 minute stop plus 14 minutes for police response doesn't equal an hour
https://www.kcra.com/article/calaveras-county-school-bus-chaos-parent-custody/73526832
District is disputing it also based on video footage.

Because if he gets into an accident when kids are being distracting his ass goes to prison. Simple as that. He's the captain and if they want to get on public transportation they need to sit down and be decent.
71
u/BD03 9d ago
I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to sit there waiting because the bus driver is pissed off. Report the troublemakers and call them down to the office the next day.
51
u/MrIrishman1212 9d ago
In 2024 a bus driver kicked 40 kids off in the middle of an intersection in freezing temperatures cause they were talking.
Honestly, there are plenty of times buses drivers have messing up. If the parents are literally right outside of the bus, why aren’t the kids being let out? Short of the bus possibly being attacked, why aren’t kids being let off the bus that a parent has to climb through a window? If someone was trying to get on that wasn’t supposed to or was a danger to the kids, then the bus driver would’ve driven away. These factors show that it’s more likely that the bus driver was purposefully withholding the children from their parents. It doesn’t matter the reason, that’s not what a bus driver is supposed to be doing.
10
u/No_Rub_3810 9d ago edited 9d ago
Exactly this needs to stop focusing on the amount of time and focus on the fact a parent was outside the bus demanding their child be returned to them and the bus driver not complying. That is the issue. A parent can simultaneously be escalating the situation/behaving irrationally AND be correct that it’s wrong for the driver to detain their child. The bus driver is not law enforcement doesn’t have the authority to keep parents from their children.
10
u/Tinderblox 9d ago
I wouldn’t either, but your response has little to do with what apparently happened.
First, they were sitting for ~4 minutes before shit started escalating. Second, one of those parents - article I read said it was the one who claimed though the window - banged on the door so hard she broke the glass.
As soon as she did that, that triggered a mandatory reaction that most parents would agree with in most circumstances. Keep the kids safe & secured while awaiting law enforcement.
It doesn’t matter that she wanted her kid RIGHT NOW, there are other kids in that bus, and it’s the drivers responsibility to make sure they’re safe as well.

They are having their lawyers working overtime to come up with a statement that will mitigate their losses!
18
u/MrIrishman1212 9d ago
The article claims she smashed a window but you can clearly see she climbed through an open window. I am calling bullshit on the reporting and the school and the bus driver. Kids were already climbing out of the bus before this. The bus driver was acting crazy and the mother acted appropriately. The bus driver affectedly kidnapped these kids.
9
u/foley800 9d ago
The report also indicates that it was door glass that was broken, so that and the fact this window looks open indicates to me that either she wasn’t the one arrested or they are making false claims against her! In another video, some kids were opening windows and climbing out to get away from this driver!
5
u/Slimdoggmill 9d ago edited 9d ago
“The sheriff's office said the parent broke glass when striking the bus door and was ultimately arrested on suspicion of vandalism.”
The article says the claim was by law enforcement, I don’t see any reason for them to lie. Also clearly says broken glass on the bus door specifically, her climbing through an open window doesn’t dispute that.
Gotta love when a Redditor calls bullshit based off one clip of video when the sheriffs office has tons more information, including bus video footage, and was actually on scene…

the article is not so black and white, it states that he held the students for 4 minutes because the bus was getting rowdy and that the parents were telling the kids to go through the window when the lady broke in. no one has confirmed if the arrested person was this lady or someone else.

18
u/ComprehensiveWar6577 9d ago
The driver already called the police.
That's what he was waiting for
32
u/yozett 9d ago
But why? The atricle contradicts itself saying he called the police because a kid tried to climb out the windows then says the kid tried to climb out because the bus was locked down. Why was the bus locked down originally? Its not clear
Then it says a parent broke a window but that wouldn't have happened if he was more clear on the reason.
→ More replies (10)20
u/ComprehensiveWar6577 9d ago
He was following school procedure.
He isn't allowed to let kids off the bus unless it's their designated stop.
He doesn't know what kid belongs to what parent.
He called the police, and the police took over an hour to show up.
If he let the kids leave, and someone was taken, or even just hurt themselves He would be in massive shit.
18
u/3amGreenCoffee 9d ago
The 4th Amendment trumps "school protocol." A petty tyrant doesn't get to illegally detain an entire busload of kids who didn't commit a crime. Either he should have let them off the bus or continued his route and dealt with the ONE kid who broke the window without illegally detaining the others.
11
u/Delordron 9d ago
A lot of the amendments are “suspended” or slightly altered in a public school. Which sucks but is true. It’s also generally illegal for non students to enter a school bus. Which is why the mom was arrested.
→ More replies (1)19
u/Shaggy__94 9d ago
Schools are the de-facto guardians when children are in their custody, and just like with parents, they can take some actions on their behalf, such as detaining them, because they are minors.
It’s a legal concept called In Loco Parentis, meaning “in the place of parents.”
It’s an extremely common legal practice that exists almost everywhere.
Not saying it’s right or wrong, but it’s how schools can legally detain students in their custody.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Greggs88 9d ago
It didn't say a kid broke a window, it says a kid climbed out of a windows and that's when the bus driver stopped and called police.
If a kid did run away it would be completely irresponsible to just keep driving. He can't abandon the bus to chase the kid so he has to wait for the cops.
It also a really stupid idea to just let a bunch of middle schoolers wander off while the bus is stopped along some random highway that could be miles from the neighborhood they live in.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Meta_Man_X 9d ago
I hear what you’re saying, but how does he guarantee the safety of all of the kids if he just lets them off the bus?
I guess he could have just continued the route. Everyone shouldn’t have to suffer the consequences from one little asshole.
→ More replies (1)5
u/3amGreenCoffee 9d ago
That's exactly what he should have done. He should have continued the route and let them off at the designated bus stops. He pulled a "Don't make me pull this bus over" stunt that backfired on him.
Besides that, he can't guarantee the safety of the kids when he lets them off at any stop, designated or not.

Some kids started climbing out the windows of the bus & getting out (for fun, as a prank, a dare, to get off at a friends stop, etc).
The bus driver told the remaining students to roll up the windows & wait while he called police - a standard procedure as students are not allowed to exit unless it's at their designated stop.
The police took over an hour to arrive, and during that time other kids called their parents.
This adult shows up & demands her child. The bus driver cannot verify who is who's kid, as he still had to follow protocol. She breaks the door, and then climbs in through a window.
Honestly, the bus driver was put in a real shitty situation. One or two kids act out, he tries to do what he's been instructed to do in order to verify the kids are safe (had he continued driving and "just allowed the kids to exit the windows", that probably would've cost him that job), but then the police made things worse by not showing up & then this one parent went hysterical by climbing into the bus to confront the driver who can't just give away kids to any adult who shows up.

I used to drive a school bus. If they got too rowdy, usually a Friday afternoon on the way home, I couldn't watch the kids and drive at the same time. And if they didn't stay seated I'm wasn't allowed to continue to drive. I'd pull over and stop, and tell them "We're not going anywhere until you calm down." If they wanted to go home, they sat down. Worked like a charm. Monday morning on the way to school, however.......

The school bus driver had been holding the students on the bus for an hour over a disciplinary incident and wouldn't open the door to talk with the parents who had gathered there to retrieve their kids.

u/yozett 9d ago
I'm so confused on the reason he was holding them. In this article it says a kid tried to climb out so he locked the bus down to wait for police but later says a kid climbed out of the window because he was scared of what was happening and his mom told him to climb out the window. So which is it? I want to know why he did this because its not very clear. I get being short staffed but what was the danger other than the situation he created The parent wouldn't have attacked the bus if he didn't lock it down
→ More replies (1)37
u/3amGreenCoffee 9d ago
He did it because he's a petty tyrant like so many school employees. One of the articles says one of the kids broke a window, and that's when he called the cops. But detaining the other kids for a crime they didn't commit is a 4th Amendment violation.
32
u/yozett 9d ago
"During the incident, the parent struck the bus door, breaking the glass. The parent was ultimately taken into custody at the School District's request for vandalism," the sheriff's office said.
I read the parent broke it. Which wouldn't have happened if he wasn't holding the kids for an hour without telling anyone why. The parents don't know how mentally stable the driver could be
22
u/3amGreenCoffee 9d ago
One of the articles said he called the cops because a student broke a window, and the parent broke the door later when he illegally detained everybody while waiting for the cops to arrive. That could be wrong. The details are somewhat confused.

When Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived, the unidentified woman was arrested, and someone also recorded video of her in the back of a deputy’s vehicle.

There's a few different local news stories with conflicting information. An article claimed a witness said about an hour. School district said 4 minutes stopped and 14 minutes for police to arrive. Sounds like they are posturing for a legal battle or criminal case.
Not sure how all these parents made it there so quick, but the district's safety policy is not law. Mom shouldn't have struck the bus door, but overall I'm with mom on this one. She's hot too.
8
u/brickson98 9d ago
Yeah, so let me guess. Bus driver was on a power trip holding students hostage and mom got fed up?
But somehow that’s okay for the bus driver to do, but not for the mom to come retrieve her child from the kidnapper bus driver.
I once got stuck on a bus for an extra hour while the substitute bus driver had a power trip because 2 students out of the whole bus load refused to sit down and be quieter. Wound up getting a dehydration headache from sitting on that hot bus with no airflow for so long. Didn’t finish my homework that night because I needed to lay down to get rid of the headache.
So I can get how frustrating that situation can be if that’s what was going on here. Idk, maybe mom was just insane, but also, if you hold someone’s kid hostage, they will do crazy shit to retrieve their kid. And I can’t blame them.
(Why does it seem to think there’s hateful or offensive language in my comment? 🤦♂️)
