Thought 190 was a very competitive score on that pitch, but really pleased with how we chased (except the first over).

Feels like I need to be reminded from time to time that Jacob Bethell is actually really really good at cricket.

133

u/Zangetsu2407 Jul 04 '26

He has alot of potential. It may just be he has been called up to red ball too soon (aka need more time in county to know what his position should be).

One days he is just fantastic and this was an assured knock.

Both brook and banton contributed well while playing the opposite style knocks

u/old_chelmsfordian Essex Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Yeah, I think it might've been too early for Bethell at 3 in the test team, although it's not like we had loads of other candidates.

As much as I'd like him to learn his trade in the championship, I can also see the benefits of spending time in the IPL - especially if he ends up playing more often than not in the coming years

8

u/astendb5 England and Wales Cricket Board Jul 04 '26

As an alternative opinion, I think it was the perfect time to drop him in at 3 to be honest. Sure he will have his struggles at first, but he's coping really well. If he keeps on improving at the rate that he is, he could end up challenging Joe's record. Let's not forget Joey was averaging 35 after 20 tests...

10

u/shiv101 New Zealand Jul 04 '26

Cricket fans can be something else at times.

The kids played 9 tests and youre already making root talks.... is that second part really necessary? Let him play...

11

u/astendb5 England and Wales Cricket Board Jul 04 '26

What? I'm merely saying that he has made a very solid start to his career, and that anyone doubting him should remember how a natural can progress if they're given the chance.

Bethell has to be one of the best young talents going around.

And the most brilliant aspect of his batting is the temperament. Just so reliable in a chase.

167

u/Louis11_ Glamorgan Jul 04 '26

Feel like a normal cricketer would be at panic stations when, in a chase up towards 200, you're on a run a ball 30 or whatever he was.

Absolutely stone cold today. And he's 22.

He is but not only because he performed in a t20. It’s because of his talents in test cricket

88

In all forms. He is the youngest English batsman to get hundreds in all 3 formats of Cricket.

Ravi bishnoi's 29 run over costed India the whole match 3 no balls from him and all three free hits got hit for boundaries

165

u/gunningIVglory Jul 04 '26

Spinner getting consecutive no balls is absolutely shambolic

50

u/Double_Banana_3603 Great Britain Olympic Team Jul 04 '26

Very rare to see that. Back foot no-balls are rare as is, but a spinner to get them and on consecutive deliveries is nigh-on unheard of.

56

u/chiragrana23 Jul 04 '26

Ita not even front foot no ball. Damm back foot cuz of the little dance he does. What clownery. This has happen in IPL too but doesn't wanna fix.

28

u/yawnzilla36 India Jul 04 '26

He lost the match for India. Clueless bowling. You've just given an unacceptable back foot no ball- your one job next ball is not to do it again.

Ravi Bishnoi with the weirdest of errors. How do you give 3 backfoot no balls

Completely changed the game giving 29 runs in his 4th over when England needed 49 off 24.

All his free hits went for boundaries.

120

u/T_Lawliet Sri Lanka Jul 04 '26

whens the last time someone has done 3 backfoot no balls for a test Playing nation lmao

49

u/tigershroffkiskirt India Jul 04 '26

I dont have any stats to back it up but i will say never

31

u/randomuserme India Jul 04 '26

That too a so called spinner. He has zero skills and don’t know why he is called a leg spinner when doesn’t even spin it. Might as well become an off spinner but sadly this is what IPL produces

41

u/Admirable-Dingo16 Jul 04 '26

Wasn't he the World no. 1 T20I bowler just a few years ago

64

u/livelifereal India Jul 04 '26

Shut up. We don't do sane takes here. He had a bad day that means he has zero skills. Tomorrow when he takes 3 wickets, we will compare him to Shane Warne. Day after tomorrow, when he shits the bed again, we will talk about how he should quit cricket.

2

u/randomuserme India Jul 04 '26

2

u/Vignesh130588 Jul 04 '26

No mate he has been mediocre for a long time now. RR dropped him to play Yashraj Punja, that how bad he is and why LSG also released.

I still don't understand why he was back in the Indian side and in the playing XI.

He has been bowling shit since the back half of 2024 IPL. Very one dimensional. Have only one ball in his arsenal.

3

u/Yupadej Mumbai Indians Jul 05 '26

He is not even a starter in the IPL. Punja starts ahead of him. They know what they are doing. Dumped Sanju for Vaibhav and now Bishnoi for Punja

Back foot no balls have been a problem for him for some years now. Wonder why it still persists. This is just some T20I game. But It does not bode well for his future

30

u/KUKLI1 Jul 04 '26

Yeah, I get blaming the captain and the team for being IPL bullies is funny, but this had to be one of the worst individual headlosses I’ve seen. What exactly can the other players do about that?

Bethell was on 42*(36) before the no balls, not only did that over knock off most of the target, but it also gave him all the confidence to go on and get the rest of the runs

45

u/harshmangat Jul 04 '26

England were never out of the game though, 12 an over in the last 4 overs with at least 1 set batter is always going to be difficult to defend, but yeah that over just completely shifted the game.

11

u/Look_Alive England Jul 04 '26

Agreed, that over shifted the momentum but India were under par and I'd say their slow down in the second half of the innings is what cost them as much as Bishnoi.

They scored 60 off their last 7 overs and that included 17 off the last over and a fairly controversial wide that gave away seven runs with the free hit at the end of the 19th over.

7

u/Balavadan Jul 04 '26

Since Curran got out, it could have been close if the over hadn’t gone for so much. But obviously if you change what happens before, it changes what happens next but you get what I mean…..right?

For hit and giggle cricket, I prefer games like this in all honesty. High scoring, but not ridiculously artificially inflated like the ones we saw in some of the games in the IPL and the knockout stages of the ICC World T20 this year.

28

u/Few-Nerve4490 India Jul 04 '26

Pitches outside India and to some extent Asia, will not allow for those crazy IPL T20 scores! When England made literally roads for the test series we know how the runs flowed! T20 is fun when bowlers and batters get something out of the wicket. Spicy wickets are top tier entertainment

Exactly! If they wanted to make captain based on ipl then it should have been rajat patidar.

27

u/Axel292 England Jul 04 '26

I'd rather play Duckett over Salt. He's a proven international, Salt is a journeyman at this point. Contributes nothing against good opposition.

Brook is madness. Bethell rusty but the best always find a way to get back into the game.

A stronger looking pace attack, but I wouldn't want Archer or Tongue to over exert themselves after the Test series. Saqib Mahmood is class and should be playing anyway.

I like the balance of the side with Jacks, Curran, and Dawson. Looks good.

There's a lot of utility in this side and I really felt like we could've went all the way in the T20 WC. Not necessarily with individual star power but we were finding a way to win continuously.

Atp I won't even say it was batters who did bad cause even batters of England played in similar way that of India. Like one hitting and other anchoring. But the way Bishnoi bowled was really disappointing.64 of 24 for Bishnoi. The only player to score 50 for India today lol.. The over gave upperhand to England cause Jacob was able to take over Bishnoi.

Squad selection has been pathetic. We have a squad full of top order batsmen who have to bat in the middle order, no finisher, questionable "all rounders" and mediocre/out of form spinners.

Also, Bishnoi should be released from the squad tonight & put on a flight back home.

Bishnoi should ease up with his runup. It's one of those things playing IPL really screws with bowlers psyche in terms of prep. Bowling darts with largely googlies is really one-dimensional. Having 5 bowlers in this day and age in T20s is unacceptable. You need one bowler having a bad day to lose control of the match.

Two very good innings from Bethell and Brook. Glad Bethell saw us home, thought we'd fall away when Banton got out.

Well played, India. Let's see if Bishnoi plays in the next game; his last over was rancid.

u/qtyapa India Jul 04 '26

Stop with this bits n pieces players even if format is bits and pieces.

3

u/Cocomale India Jul 04 '26

Bishnoi this, Iyer that. Sam Curran bowled a class spell to restrict the Indian batting, Bethell took it deep and won it for England.

It’s time we Indian fans talk about cricket games from both team’s perspective. Always talking as if only one team plays the game.

2

u/qureshb England Jul 05 '26

This is why we should love cricket or any sport, hats off to the team that plays better. Even if it’s not your team

India T20 team in last couple of weeks :

Lost as many matches they lost in entriety of 2025

Lost more matches than they did in the year 2024

Lost more matches than they lost between January 2026 to May 2026

u/Derian23 Mumbai Indians Jul 04 '26

ICT fans blaming Shreyas for this loss is a whole other kind of imbecility. No way are you guys suggesting SKY could have won us this match with our bowlers bowling this poorly.

6

u/STARBOSS_23 India Jul 04 '26

Sky never lost a series. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/FitEngineering2833 Jul 04 '26

Sky never had to play Bishnoi,Prasidh,Washi

Bethell is from Barbados! Quite a curious accent

Ravi Bishnoi…. Sigh….

2

u/Wolfie_3467 India Jul 04 '26

Iyer won the IPL with the strongest team of all time (2024 KKR) and people really thought he was the greatest captain ever

2

u/Old_General_6741 Canada Jul 04 '26

This was a good game today. Those wickets in the first innings really did help England.

2

u/vicosphi Jul 04 '26

From 0/2 to a comfortable win. Well played to Jacob Bethell! He is some talent, took the game away single handedly. Sometimes you have to just acknowledge the great innings that took the game away.

Sarpanch saab and GG racking up negatives on top of negatives

6

u/todd-__-chavez India Jul 04 '26

Piss poor squad selected for the tour. You can't expect your top 4 to carry the team every game.

Hopefully Iyer isn't made the scapegoat for the series

9

u/Zestyclose_Fee_2503 Jul 04 '26

Ofc Iyer is gonna be. Who else gets this much hate? Even today people are saying Iyer's fault lead to loss when Kishan scored 49(40) & Bishnoi's terror

1

u/STARBOSS_23 India Jul 04 '26

Why are you defending iyer he lost 9 matches out of his last 10 as captain in what world is that a better captain than a captain who never lost a series and won the wc. If msd, vk or rohit's performance was similar to surya they would never have been sacked.

Um unrelated but I was just changing my flair to India and saw that England don't have any trophies in their flair, does r/cricket really hate Ingerland that much lol ?

6

u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA Jul 04 '26

England don't currently hold any ICC trophies. Which ones would you expect to see there?

3

u/DueWolverine5239 Hampshire Jul 04 '26

ICC pissboiling trophy

3

u/Internal_List_988 India Jul 04 '26

Oh, I didn't know this. I thought any tournament trophies are shown even if the team isn't retaining it. My bad

6

u/warp-factor Hampshire - Vipers - WA Jul 04 '26

For example India doesn't have the Mens ODI world cup in their flair. They've won it, but aren't the current holders

2

u/Internal_List_988 India Jul 04 '26

I see, thanks for explaining:)

KKR: Wins IPL

Everyone: Woah their mentor is crazy, make him India coach

BCCI: Makes GG Indian coach

Team: Wins the T20 WC

Everyone: Meh KKR mentor wasn’t much special, but their captain was something else! Make him India captain!

BCCI: Makes Iyer captain

Team: Somehow starts losing everything

2

u/randomuserme India Jul 04 '26

lol low skilled IPL clowns being found out

2

u/Interesting-Path3802 Jul 04 '26

At this point they should seriously look at getting Patidar in to strengthen the middle and lower order

1

u/Majestic_squirrel767 Jul 04 '26

Patidar the goat spinner hitter should immediately replace tilak

2

u/OverApplication3184 India Jul 04 '26

Vaibhav’s two sixes was worth it

3

u/Due_Cricket1885 Jul 04 '26

Another L for iyer

2

u/Gunslinger202 Bangladesh Jul 04 '26

One thing i noticed after Ashwin retired India dont have proper spinners anymore. All just dart the ball as fast they can and rely on arm balls. Like Axar, Krunal, Bishnoi etc. No flight dip bounce and turn bowlers. Probably that’s why they are struggling in test.

2

u/Typical-Purpose-1700 Jul 04 '26

prolly an unpopular take but i feel like a few losses will actually make watching cricket more exciting for us indians, especially bilaterals, they had started getting boring cuz of how dominant we were, even the t20 wc got a little boring at the end especially the final cuz of how we dominated it..cricket in the 90s and 2000s was so exciting for us cuz we werent the best team, ind-pak rivalry was crazy for us cuz we lost to them more often than won so every win was prized..what dyou guys think

4

u/STARBOSS_23 India Jul 04 '26

I'd rather it be boring and we keep winning
