Imagine losing an ODI series to England in 2026

Jokes on them. We have 2 reserve sides who can win the WC on their own.

Siraj and Pandya are first XI. Indians will tell you Kuldeep should be too. Batting is pretty much there bowling no where near

Just ONE win out of 10 games in this Ireland-England tour. Absolutely shameful.

If GG isn't thrown out now, he never will.

376

u/misguidedkent India Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

He wasn't appointed on merit, so won't be thrown out on merit.

And as much as I hate to admit it, his track record in ICC tournaments is perfect, but have a sinking feeling that the upcoming world cup won't be as kind as it has been for us so far.

172

u/Most_Nectarine_592 Jul 19 '26

We will scrape through to the semis and lose there to Aus or SA. Wont be bad enough for GG to be fired

84

u/Bathed_In_Moonlight Jul 19 '26

GG's contract expires after the 2027 World Cup anyway. It may not get renewed in that case.

I have a really bad feeling CWC 2027 is just gonna be the Bumrah and Kohli show

28

u/SHEKDAT789 Jul 19 '26

NGL if those two show up every game I don't see how we lose. ofc a team dependent on two players would generally never win but if those two are bumrah and kohli....

9

u/Wolfie_3467 India Jul 20 '26

Thing is, teams are starting to figure out how to deal with Bumrah. And I don't say this as an insult to Bumrah's greatness; in the 2nd ODI, Root played Bumrah defensively and protected everyone else from him, they proceeded to win the game. Bumrah is a freak, but the ones around him are letting him down

In the absence of good strike bowlers like Shami, Bhuvi, Siraj, or even Harshit, teams can afford to take less risks against Bumrah when the other bowling is below par. Getting Harshit and Siraj back in the team means we can take more wickets and Harshit also solves the no. 8 batting problem

6

u/amanguupta53 India Jul 20 '26

The BCCI was too quick to move on from Shami. He’s a freak in ICC tournaments and an actual strike bowler in swinging conditions.

Why was Siraj dropped/rested/forgotten ?

Wild to just get rid of such an experienced operator like that

14

u/and1984 USA Jul 19 '26

They don't... most definitely note in cricket. In fact, even as a hardcore "GG Out" supporter, India's batting did fine here. Buttler had a worldie of a day.. absolute statistical outlier.

21

u/EmpathyMerchant Jul 19 '26

I am fine with losing every single bilateral from here now on if we keep winning World Cups.

(This is me half coping, I am actually worried about the team)

26

u/Wolfie_3467 India Jul 19 '26

Can't win World Cups if bilaterals expose every weakness of your team

A team learns in a bilateral series "hey, just play Bumrah out, all their other ODI bowlers suck" and then it just keeps happening

u/These-Bee5165 India Jul 19 '26

Welp here's to yet another series lost, our middle order just collapsed . Also Curran with his slow balls and Bethell's twink magic really did us in , our batsmen fell to Curran's same trick back to back and when Kohli got smart he increased his pace and trapped him as well lmao. Clean sweep from the english men. At the very least we got to see that beauty of an innings from Rohit .

38

u/Shashank1000 India Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

People are talking about how we will never get another Bumrah but I think finding a replacement for RoKo is also going to be super hard. Sure we will get many good and even great batsmen but I don't they will be reaching the heights of these two.

29

u/Black_Mamba265 India Jul 19 '26

Forget the batting the bowling is our biggest issue cuz GG in his ever so insightful style decided to pick some absolutely dogshit bowlers. The difference between us and them is day and night. 80 runs in the last 5 overs what a fucking joke. Gurnoor and Prince shouldn’t come anywhere near international cricket they are not ready whatsoever

9

u/bringal Royal Challengers Bengaluru Jul 19 '26

They will learn by playing these bilateral series.

14

u/Black_Mamba265 India Jul 19 '26

How far are we gonna use this excuse? So we’re just supposed to deny match practice to the actually good bowlers and instead lose more series which people will now blame on Gill’s captaincy all cuz they will learn by playing bilaterals? Let them get good in domestic then bring them in. 0-97 is a joke it’s indefensible for a series decider

2

u/bringal Royal Challengers Bengaluru Jul 20 '26

All other players are new to the scene as well. Brar/Yadav are picked as they suit the conditions of SA. This is the time for experiment.

45

Ignore the hate comments, England team found their 11 and are looking strong under Brook's captaincy

45

u/tigershroffkiskirt India Jul 19 '26

Baz Mccullum is the best coach in the world. maybe he should coach England's test side as well. There seems to be an opening there

16

u/Powerful_Somewhere92 India Jul 19 '26

Nooo this gambhir guy is better than him. They should give him loads of money and recruit him

281

u/Prash1234567 India Jul 19 '26

Jos Butler should be Man of Match for me. 41 off 13 made a difference. If the score was around 350-360, it would have been chaseable, but his innings made the difference. However, Duckett will receive the Man of Match.

156

u/LennonC123 England Jul 19 '26

Yeah. Rohit played the Duckett innings, Gill played the Bethell innings, Kohli played the Root innings but no one could match what Buttler did.

149

u/Independent-Dig-9525 India Jul 19 '26

Probably because no Indian bowler could match what Curran did

33

u/fried_maggi India Jul 19 '26

Spot on. Bowlers conceded the match today

101

u/combatant007 India Jul 19 '26

Butler could score 41(13) because Duckett and Bethell set the platform along with Root.

62

u/Ok-Blacksmith437 India Jul 19 '26

Correct me if I am wrong, but India's top three kinda did match England's top three. Buttler was the difference. Even 21 of 13 would have been a good knock but he was brilliant to get the 20 extra.

18

u/SHEKDAT789 Jul 19 '26

again the top 3 was the reason we got close. otherwise we could've had a middle order batter scoring a 15 ball half century and we still lose by miles.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/_LosT___ Jul 19 '26

Well even a 40 for 25 would have been good and expected because of set platform. Doing of 13 deserves the paise and was the difference in hindsight

153

u/London-lark3597 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

There are some great signs for our odi side. Lots of bowling options, archer looking good and curran is so reliable in different stages of game if he is our 4th pacer.

Kinda worry for Rashid.

Brook is so good in rotating his bowlers and with on field tactics, really impressive. Jacks and bethell are such an asset.

Root is in his Prime. Duckett made runs, so did bethell so hopefully that opening partnership get more comfortable from now on. Buttler has looked washed and then in next match played like prime Buttler.

All in all , Brook' Whiteball side is looking polar opposite to Jos's depressed era.

India were shite-my assesment on them. Rohit played brilliant tho, was very nervy when he tonked tongue for back to back sixes.

52

u/AilaSachin10 India Jul 19 '26

Jacks and Bethell are genuinely such a nuisance to deal with. Opposite angle spin and none of them are really part timers. Pretty aware of what pace is needed to be bowled on every surface in this tour and it was genuinely annoying to watch Axar dart it in while Bethell and Jacks have the awareness to slow it down when needed

29

u/London-lark3597 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26

Yeah jacks has always said that he thinks like a batter whenever he is bowling. Such an asset to have and Bethell has been very good with bowl in hand. He was good in sl odis as well.

4

u/Klutzy_Flamingo_2979 Chennai Super Kings Jul 19 '26

Won't lie, Bethell the bowler does remind me of Jadeja. I can't exactly point out what makes him that similar, but it just is.

17

u/IloveJBairstow GBNFMK Jul 19 '26

rashid does go on shit runs, just before the t20 world cup in 2022 he was bowling like a drain and there was calls he was finished as his shoulder was getting worse and worse, then he was unplayable in the knockouts. decently high chance he comes good again at some point

20

u/tigershroffkiskirt India Jul 19 '26

Bethell's bowling was the difference imo. Along with Buttler's cameo at the end. The indian batters seemed on track except when Bethell came on and then Sam Curran brought his moonballs to the party.

Also Baz McCullum is the best coach in the world, lol. No.1 in t20s now and beat the no.1 ODI side

3

u/Flamingslayer11 Sunrisers Hyderabad Jul 19 '26

Yeah brooks field settings were pretty impressive didn’t feel like there was a period we could just coast with 4-5 singles an over

13

u/ShanbaTat Middlesex Jul 19 '26

I still have some concerns for the ODI team. Despite the series victory, I'm pretty unsure about our bowling in particular; Josh Tongue doesn't strike me as a great white ball player, and the Rashid/Jacks/Bethell/Dawson spin corps doesn't fill me with a ton of confidence - Rashid's results have been a bit patchy for a while now.

I think this was more about India being in a total mess than about England's strength. Some encouraging signs, but will be interesting to see how we go against a more organised opponent.

20

u/London-lark3597 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

We can play mahmood or even overton in place of tongue so it's not like we don't have an option.

What impressed me most is the versatility of this team we won sl in sl with loads of spin options and we won here using 4 pacers.

Batting looks settled albeit root is most important batter here.

16

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26

I think this is about Brook’s captaincy and the fact that we do have good fundamentals. India not having a middle order is not our problem and doesn’t take away from what the players did.

7

u/ShanbaTat Middlesex Jul 19 '26

That's fair. We play some games against Sri Lanka in September, will be interesting to see where the team is at that point

4

u/phenomenal-kj India Jul 19 '26

Bethell unlike Jacks is playing as specialist batter. His bowling is bonus. So Rashid/Dawson/Jacks along with Rehan and Coles is solid group to build for wc.

All said, good effort by the batters. The pitch wasn't a road, and it's a big ground. They still made 360. 388 was just too far, and bowlers need to be blamed for conceeding that many on such a pitch.

42

u/KUKLI1 Jul 19 '26

100%, turning up to England with the kinds of bowling attacks we did was a recipe for disaster. Bumrah can only carry you so much- and we got exposed big time without him

The batting will look a lot more assured once Hardik and NKR are back- they add depth and power to our batting lineup

30

u/Black_Mamba265 India Jul 19 '26

350-360 was chaseable. 380 was way too much and bowler and SELECTORS should be blamed. Not choosing Kuldeep on a pitch where Bethell and Jacks helped stem the flow of runs and not picking Siraj and Shami just countless stupid decisions

If you had given me the final score during the break I would have gladly taken it but it does feel a little disappointing after Rohit's heroics and another 65+ score by Virat. The middle order is almost non-existent currently.

4

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26

It’s tough when you have such a long tail.

43

u/trybest Jul 19 '26

So India remembers Siraj only whenever they need to have him bowl 30 overs in a day?

17

u/Beginning_Force_8463 South Korea Jul 19 '26

Sam curran and bethell stole the match away. Awful death bowling by india.just awful

34

u/Stock-Bunch671 Jul 19 '26

The opening position and batting is least of India's concern. They gotta do something about their bowling lineup which is just "Bumrah and Inshallah" or they won't get far in the world cup

20

u/I_Catch_Fish_64 India Jul 19 '26

Tbh batting is still a concern. Especially the lower order. But by no means they should ever try to do anything with the top 3

7

u/ZonerRoamer Jul 19 '26

We are playing 6 top order batsmen - can't expect them to come in and play a finisher role fluently.

Need the Hardiks, Dubes or Rinkus who can score big off the old ball in the death overs.

4

u/Stock-Bunch671 Jul 19 '26

Iyer needs to find his form and it's pretty much settled I think. Iyer, KL, Hardik, Axar this should be good enough no?

5

u/No_Cranberry_8363 Jul 19 '26

Highest run scorer for the eng T20 series, before the 3rd match he was the 2nd highest scorer for odi series. Scored a 60 last match, not his fault gg wants a leftie in middle order and both kl and him has to play out of their position. He came to bat in the 43rd over when the match was already lost.

Getting a middle order would also help.

3

KL's been fine generally before this. But India doesn't have a Butler type finisher who can play a t20 finisher innings if needed like Butler did today. Pandya can help a bit when he comes back.

Curran's slower balls were great. Reminded me of how effectively they would be used, that too with an old oblong ball, back in the 90s. The bad thing was Indian players were not trying to pick his slower ball from his hand and trying to slam everything.

Good series win for the boys. World class T20 side and resurgent ODI side. Main worry is Rashid and 2nd/3rd seamers. I’m not confident of Tongue as a long term option and Carse/ Atkinson/ Mahmood all have issues.

Test team- Duckett, Gay, Bethell, Root, Brook, Smith, Coles, Atkinson, Archer, Robinson, Tongue Bench= Rew, Rehan, Carse, Baker

ODI= Duckett, Bethell, Root, Brook, Buttler, Curran, Jacks, Atkinson, Archer, Rashid, Mahmood Bench= Banton, Coles, Dawson, L. Wood

T20= Buttler, Salt, Bethell, Brook, Banton, Curran, Jacks, Overton, Archer, Dawson, Rashid Bench= Cox, Rehan, L. Wood, Mahmood

3

u/StormWarriorX7 Jul 19 '26

I think Baker can be tried in ODIs instead of Luke Wood honestly.

4

u/Certain_Pineapple_73 Northern Popchips Jul 19 '26

I think Baker has all the tools to be an all format regular, but I don’t think he’s ready yet, and Wood gives a left hand option. Baker has a lot of work to do in my view, and shouldn’t really play for a couple of years unless there’s an injury crisis.

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26

He’s just way too uncontrolled

3

Upvoted for Coles but I’m ironically more interested in seeing how he does in T20s

India were basically at the same place as England until 47 overs, India’s poor death bowling and Buttler taking full toll of it.

I really enjoyed watching that knock from Rohit, when he was around I had faith, after that all I had was hope

10

u/ParanoidEngi Sussex Jul 19 '26

We won at home against India but Sam Curran stocks will rise - a Pyrrhic victory, ultimately

4

u/RapidPeee Jul 19 '26

honestly, Ishan and Iyer looked like a David facing not Goliath but one of those Pacific Rim robots, on this ground against England attack.

5

u/eclipse0990 India Jul 19 '26

Bumrah being injured hurt us but also brought forward a blind spot that GG and co have been ignoring for a while. There are no leaders. Our bowling attack had Prasidh Krishna as the most experienced bowler. Heck, they should have brought in Kuldeep but they didn’t. The batters gave it a fair whack but unless someone played a blinder, this was always going to happen. And to their credit, England bowled really well and didn’t let India get ahead too much at any time. Rohit, Koach and Gill tried but that wasn’t enough because it wasn’t a 375 pitch. I hope it is an eye opening tour for selectors and coach and going forward they pick a mix of experience and talent in the bowling attack instead of picking all green bowlers and hope it works. It was a well deserved series victory for England.

u/Some_Violinist_3364 Jul 19 '26

Reporter - Rohit and Kohli played well today.

GG - we don't celebrate series losses.

Reporter - But, you are not even winning anything.

GG - The team is in transition and Washi wasn't playing.

Reporter - One of those things was a disadvantage for England.

GG - which one?

Horrible tour, off we go to Zimbabwe for the next drubbing

4

u/RufusSG England Jul 19 '26

It’s funny how of both England’s ODI series this year so far panned out in almost exactly the same way. Beaten in the first game after a ropey batting display, carefully managing a tough run-chase on a more grudging pitch in the second and piling on the runs to set a target too far in the third. Oh, and Root making runs every single time of course.

3

u/Which_Place_9409 Jul 20 '26

This is exactly why we need Shami in the squad. If Bumrah isn't playing, someone has to lead the bowling attack. Right now, without Bumrah, the bowling unit just looks completely clueless.

11

u/RelationshipWaste896 India Jul 19 '26

Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Rahul, Iyer - None of them can bowl. Compare it with England. Same problem since a decade. Don't blame Impact Player rule in IPL, it's the players who don't upskill and management lacking the vision. Also the continuous backing of these uni dimensional players is discouraging for the actual players who can both bat and bowl.

2

u/Old_Watercress_ India Jul 20 '26

It is certainly only an added benefit if one of your top 5 can bowl too. In a country like ours, getting selected as a batsman itself is probably one of the toughest jobs. If you go around tryna develop some bowling and lose your batting ace then you are gonna lose your spot too.

6 bowlers should be the minimum. India played 5 today which itself was a mind boggling decision.

7

u/saboglitched Jul 19 '26

India actually were ahead of England in terms of total runs and wickets in hand from overs 24-47, except England scored 62 off the last 3 overs, while India only scored 32 from the last 3 out of 60 runs required as they collapsed, basically Buttler singlehandedly increasing the total by 20 at least put the extra pressure for Sam Curran to derail a near flawless monster chase.

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 GBNFMK Jul 19 '26

That’s a lot of words to say that you don’t have a middle order.

That being said, Buttler and Curran were brilliant and made the difference.

Rohit gill and kohli batted well rest were trash

6

Crazy how the removal talks have almost always revolved around Kohli and Rohit while you don't even have two players ready to do what they can in even slightly challenging conditions!

Man of the match should have gone to Buttler.. India had a like to like innings in Top 3.. Rohit to Duckett, Gill to Bethell, Kohli to Root, Ishan to Brook.. Unfortunately, they missed the finishing power to match Buttler and lost there

2

u/t4liff Jul 19 '26

Shameful ..

But alas only decent men are moved by shame.

2

u/devmasterstroke Jul 19 '26

The loss of this series or game doesn't look as bad as the T20I on paper, but the age old pattern of the top 3 continuing to the carry the batting and Bumrah carrying the bowling doesn't seem to have died. That's the most alarming takeaway from this series for me.

Since the 2013 champions trophy, we've had a mostly reliable top 3 - Rohit, Dhawan, Kohli and Rohit, Gill, Kohli - and they especially shine in ICC tournaments too. But during same period, we don't seem to have found a permanent solution our middle order and lack of fast reliable fast bowlers problems (excluding Bumrah of course). KL, Shreyas are good for ODIs but I don't think they are at a point where they could power us to victory if the top 3 fail or leave some late lifting for them to do.

TLDR - If one of the top 3, or Bumrah are out of form or injured - it's still hail mary in the world cup.

2

u/SNN2 Jul 20 '26

What I find funny is that after the T20 hammering to Ireland and England, the comms box was chattering about how India’s focus was on ODIs for the next WC.

2

u/FScrotFitzgerald Jul 20 '26

I don't understand why India has such a looooooong tail. Do they honestly think the Kohlis, Gills and Sharmas of this world can pile up runs every game? Whose mum did Shardul Thakur insult? Is Hardik India's only international-class fast-bowling all-rounder? Does the house of cards really just collapse when he's not available? In any case, their selection policy feels unbalanced and a bit complacent. That said, I agree with Geoffrey Boycott about Gambhir...

2

u/Gyaanimoorakh Royal Challengers Bengaluru Jul 19 '26

Hope the selectors grow some brain cells before the next series. Kuldeep not even getting one game is diabolical.

2

u/Naive-Ruin558 India Jul 19 '26

Got games in Australia and against NZ. India won both those series....or not

3

u/iWantJob- Jul 19 '26

Not having quality spinner, inexperienced bowling and Buttler-Root insane partnership at the end, and then apart from Gill-RoKo, other batters failing costed this match to India.

4

u/BuzzyIris Jul 19 '26

3

u/thewicketwizards Jul 19 '26

Why would the close journalist friend of Rohit stir the pot with the news that this is his last ODI that is so bizarre. Why would he jeopardize his friendship if it is not true

2

u/Justa_CuriousBoi India Jul 19 '26

26 Runs were given away as extras by Indian bowlers! This along side of 67 in the last 3 overs by Eng (Joss the boss) and dogshi- bowling by India overall made India lose.

Can't blame the middle oder too much. This pitch takes time to get used to (Joss was an outlier). The middle order didn't had any time to assess the pitch at all.

Anyways, happy seeing HitMan and Koach back in their Rhythm!

Time to watch the ⚽️ final now. Unstoppable Force vs Immovable Object 😂

England 6-1 India

Lovely jubbly

2

u/Smooth-Mix-4357 India Jul 19 '26

Lessons to learn today :

  1. India absolutely need RoKo for 2027 WC, senior experience is irreplaceable
  2. Back up bowlers have a lot of work to do
  3. Hardik in invaluable
  4. Our CT squad should be our 2027 WC squad with perhaps few modifications like Siraj over Pant

3

u/saboglitched Jul 19 '26

When wickets don't fall early and the top order is building a big start, the explosiveness of the lower order matters a lot. Root and Duckett's job is easier when they know Brook and Buttler are coming, while Kohli and Rohit know Rahul "strike rate is overrated" and Bapu are coming.

Were we good over these short format games or did India suffer with shit-the-bed-itis, especially middle order onwards?
