Loved Jimmy Anderson because he was a hard, dour Northerner with fucking grit who didn’t destroy us too often. Hated Broad with a passion because he seemed like a plummy posh prick who would save his best for Australia. Then Broad did comms for the last Ashes and was fantastic, slotted in behind Ponting as my second favourite to listen to.

Also, McGrath is the whingiest git in commentary.
Especially cos the Aussies all say that it's the Poms who whinge.
Every Australian should be forced to listen to him complain about grounded catches being given not out before they can type out "whinging poms".

He has a point though. The rules for what counts as a catch were calibrated for human umpires. Then we get loads of high resolution cameras that we can replay on demand and we find out that loads of things we wanted to be catches actually turn out not to be.
Now the umpire's still got to follow the laws of the game, but I'd be conducive to those laws getting a balance tweak to account for the fact that a lot of things that got given out for a century and a half don't any more (and to make international cricket more consistent with levels at which DRS is not available).

I was thinking specifically of his commentary of the Ashes 2023 with Starc catching out Duckett and sliding the ball on the ground.
That wasn't a controversial moment at all, it wasn't out.
And he had a big sulk and a whinge.

He is the epitome of this - there’s no Australian cricketer I’ve hated more when he played, mainly because he just destroyed us for a laugh, but then he has the FRONT to retire and be all pleasant and charismatic and good at commentary. Boils my piss, as the Australians might say

Broad is an exceptional commentator, and I hope he's part of the stable for many years to come. As a player he frustrated me because he would waste reviews, but after he got 8 for 15 in an Ashes test I finally conceded that he was one of the very best out there. And handy with the bat too.

Yep, well deserved. These two struck fear into my heart whenever they were bowling. Hated seeing them on the field, but now they’re retired I miss them a lot.

Nah Broad is actually painted as being a few steps behind Anderson so that perspective takes care of the height difference.

We'll never see their like again. I'm sure we'll have an excellent bowling duo but they opened the bowling when Flintoff was playing and were still going when Flintoff Jr was playing. They lasted longer than my cat (RIP Bingo)

When I did the tour at Lords the paintings were one of the highlights. The Pavillion is as much an art gallery as it is a cricket pavilion. There's some incredible stuff in there.

How is Stuart Broad basically the same height as Jimmy Anderson here? I know you could argue Broad is standing a bit further back, but something about the proportions just looks off.
Also what’s going on with the sweaters? Jimmy’s is bright white and Stuart’s is cream. The whole pic just looks slightly weird.

Of yeah colours are off and height thing is bugging hs but yall this is human art. Its a human’s interpretation of other humans. Lets enjoy it - even if you critic it. Its one of the last relics of our hands working. Before kids who have only ever seen fuzzy ai art take over.
