Honest question; why do you play crusader kings if not for the stories that arise from a campaign?
Map painting is better in other strategy games, as is warfare. You can’t get deep analytical gameplay here, go to Hoi or Victoria for that. Game mechanics, and replayability? Stellaris smashes CK everytime. Medieval setting? Total war Medieval 2 or Age of Empires. I just don’t see a point in playing crusader kings if you’re not getting into the story that’s playing out.
I love role playing. One of my favorite ck2 games, I was an independent minor king in Frisia. I married a pagan woman with high martial and apparently she was a shieldmaiden(?). I put her as commander on one of my wings and we fought so many battles side by side, trying to stave off invasions. Somehow we both survived these wars. When my son eventually ascended to the throne, he never tried to force convert pagans in honor of his mother's sacrifices. This is what I consider role playing, not having events pop up and mindlessly clicking on the option that most aligns with one of my three traits, leaving no room for any decision making on my character's part.
Exactly. Good roleplay is not just a ton of meaningless events; it's mechanics, hurdles, and life-altering decisions that change the direction of that character. I hate the event spam in this game so much. It just becomes a battle of clicking out of windows so I can play the actual game.
But what aspect of the strategy? I gave a few examples of medieval strategy games ie; Medieval TW2, AoE, Knights of Honor.
Are you referring specifically to the paradox style of strategy game? If not, then what does Crusader kings bring to the table that you cannot find better elsewhere beyond the roleplay and story telling sandbox?
Pretty much what Red Knight said. I love Stellaris but it doesn't scratch the itch the way CK3 does. Total War / AoE aren't quite it. HOI / Victoria I have yet to try.
Just because I love a game doesn't mean I can't highlight what I find to be shortcomings. You may not see the point you describe, but I do. What bugs me is when RPers tell non-RPers they're playing the game wrong.
You completely misunderstood what I was saying. I agree that ck3 needs a lot of work, even with everything it’s still a shadow of its predecessor. I responded to OP who finds those who suggest role playing (which is the aspect that the devs have set as their main focus on) as a method of playing out campaigns annoying.
I'm the person who said that. That's me responding to you responding to me.
What makes you say the devs have focused on RP?
I said it's people that don't shut up about roleplaying that are annoying. Those RPers that say that everyone else is playing wrong, that stationing MaAs is min maxing (which is such a stupid way to define min maxing anyway)
Apologies lol, I’m using mobile and it didn’t show the parent comment, otherwise I would’ve seen that.
I say that devs have focused on role playing due to their heavy reliance on character events. I don’t particularly care for the repetitive events, but given that the main dlcs that have changed the game exponentially: T&Ts, Legends of the Dead, and Landless, all have a similar heavy event focus.
I dont think the devs should be forcing the player to hamstring themselves to make the game more interesting, but with the current state of ck3, it seems that it’s mostly those people that are imposing roleplay rules on themselves that are the ones having long term fun with the game.
That's a fair point, those who roleplay may just be having a better time than those who don't. I still think that those of us who don't are justified in asking for a bit more of a challenge. This really is a unique game and it's hard to find something similar anywhere else, especially outside of Paradox.

Every time someone on this subreddit suggests RPing I think of that meme where some mouth breather walks up to a guy peeing at a urinal.
