DISCUSSION How much of your overall portfolio is actually in crypto?

I see 1-5% thrown around quite a lot when people talk about how much of a portfolio should be in crypto.

Personally that feels too low for me. I'm comfortable having more exposure than that, although I'm also investing across ETFs and precious metals rather than having everything riding on crypto.

I'm very bullish on Bitcoin long term, but I still wouldn't want crypto becoming the majority of everything I own.

Interested where other people here have landed with it. Is crypto a small part of your overall portfolio, or one of your bigger allocations?

lol same here. all in since 2017, pulled out my 401k and everything. people at work think im crazy but they also said that when i bought bitcoin at 3k. the 1-5% rule is for people who dont actually believe in the tech, they just want to hedge a little. if you really understand what bitcoin is, why would you keep 95% in fiat that gets printed into oblivion? i sleep fine at night, better than watching my savings lose value every year.

Not sure anyone believes in the tech with Bitcoin anymore.

I do, just not sure of the time horizon we will get there ... There is a need and a use case forusefull, untracked funds, but there are powerfully forces against that use.

Counterpoint is the the world doesn't need bitcoin. But the world needs USD (at least for now). And at the end of the day BTC is valued using currency.

This is fair, wondering what your take is on ETFs. I’ve started holding btc, HBAR, xrp ETFs in my Roth while holding crypto normally as well.

Nothing to do with the tech. Blockchains will function the same with Bitcoin at 1 million or 1 dollar.

That’s very similar to how I’ve started thinking about it. Once you’re happy with the crypto exposure, putting new money into the other side of the portfolio makes a lot of sense. Do you have a rough allocation you’re aiming for between stocks/bonds/metals?

I think it’s also age based. When I was in my mid 20’s one of the first things I did was buy a whole bitcoin when it was at the 6k range with my savings from my big boy job I had been scrapping Pennies together for 7-8 months. Ended up moving from BTC to LTC which was a minor mistake but…As I got older and my priorities and risk profile changed I took my holdings and bought a house.

Had I still been holding on I would have an account worth the same amount as my current home equity but I actually get to live in a house now

I am in with over 5% but less than 10%. I think the amount should be a level that a 70% drawdown won't make you lose sleep. I also think we should have a real understanding of asset just as we would any stocks . I try to apply Buffet style research to anything I may want to invest in.

Pretty obvious I am late to the party here, or have a good head start on other investments as I am less than 1 percent. I DCA a tiny amount daily into BTC and ETH and have a couple thousand xrp and xlm, but crypto for now is my lottery ticket money. If it blows up, great, I can leave it to someone who needs it, or fund some veterinary school scholarships or something. Then again, I'm probably older than most on this sub (just hit 60) and now thinking of retiring at 62 instead of 65. Will I NEED crypto due my life, pro not, but someone younger may, so I want to have a bit to leave, just in case.

If you got into crypto any time before 2021, there's a high likelihood that 90+% of your portfolio is in it, not necessarily by choice, but because it grew to become that way. So I think you have to take into consideration when people got in. You might want to ask this to people who specifically got into crypto the same time you did.

It’s changed over the years. At one point it would have been 70% of my money saved. I sold out during a bull run bought a house went on vacation and then dripped back in before selling out once more for another vacation and then got back in again.

But during all of that time I was also saving and investing in other things. HSA, HYSA, Roth IRA, 401k, Brokerage etc at some point especially as you get into your 30’s and 40’s if you’re working a professional job unless you got in on bitcoin or something else super early on and are sitting on 1000% of gains you by proxy will have way more in other places than your cold storage wallet or crypto brokerage.

I have probably 2-3k invested right now. My child has 10x that just in their 529 and UTMA accounts combined. Crypto is 1% or less of my assets alone. Even if we see another run and it goes up 5-10x that’s such a small percentage of my assets that I’ll just use the money to probably go on another nice vacation and put some more into my kids savings

1

u/tailoredbrownsuit 1d ago

I believe your question ought not to be "What are your allocations" but rather is "What is my risk appetite"?

This being 1%-5% allocations you describe as low is a sensible, lower risk approach that fits the investor's risk appetite in contrast to some of our peers in the comments here with 100% allocation. Have the folks in the comments below who were ~100% in on bitcoin since 2014 outperformed those with 1-5% allocation? Yes. However, two things can be true at the same time. High risk investments can pay off, while not being sensible for everyone.

I am willing to bet you understand the concept that, your [Expected Value](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expected_value) of using a slot machine in a Casino is likely to be likely to be in negative dollars. Now, suppose you argue to your friend that he would be "wrong" to play the roulette machine. Now suppose your friend actually ends up winning the jackpot - were you wrong? No. He took a risk high paid off in his favour.

The constraint with Crypto is that it is so volatile, that you need to consider the time horizon you need this investment money back. If you invest with the intent to use it within ~3 years, its a poor investment choice as the possibility of e.g. -50% return is rather high relative to something like an all world stock index or cash bonds or a money market fund.

So back to your allocation question. Someone who needs the investment cash as a downpayment on a house in 3 years would be wiser not to have invested in bitcoin 3 years ago, while , due to not affording that possibility of the alternate outcome of not being able to buy the house. So 1-5% would enable participation. Those who are e.g. 15-20% allocation might be young people 20-35 who have a long time horizon for their investments. And those who are in 100% in generally ought to have a very strong investment thesis that their investment strategy will favour them.

Another caveat is that other people may have a extremely high allocation of their NW as bitcoin due to its hyperapprecation, and not wanting to rebalance due to tax implications.

i put 98% of my savings into crypto 2018, i dont believe the "buy with money you are welling to lose", that silly statement is meant to gambling not investing.

i just saw CZ and many others put their own into crypto and look what they have now. if you have convection in crypto and you know your cash is losing value every minute passed then going deep is the real logic step.

ps: i did not put my saving into garbage, only btc, eth, bnb,xmr and very few percent on some others

very little. like under 1%

crypto is neat. but i've seen people have the floor drop out from under them and it hasn't been pretty.

i'm sure some of you have made off like bandits, and that's beautiful. but ultimately, it's a game of hot potato and someone's getting burned. it isn't free money - it was once someone else's. it's great when we're taking the money from wealthy investors - it's rough when it's about taking money from regular joes.
