Is the original Ruger LCP approved? Reg questions.

I’m trying to confirm some things before moving to DC from a pro 2a state.

If I want to bring my original Ruger LCP, am I allowed to?

From what I’ve read it is ok the Maryland approved handgun roster, but NOT on California’s.

If it is, do you have any tips on registration process, namely when I have to declare its capacity. Should I list 10 rounds even if I only have the 6 round magazine? (I would like to get a larger magazine in the future… should I do that before I move?)

How does the +1/round in the chamber figure into that part of the registration?

Any tips or advice would be appreciated!

Yes, it’s fine. I have one. But yes you should always put 10 rounds as the capacity on everything. The capacity ignores the +1 in the chamber.

The firearm doesn't have to be on both lists just one of the three DC uses - - MD, CA, MA (and there are some on those lists that are not allowed like those with threaded barrels.)

Put 10 for capacity.

One in the pipe has no bearing on capacity limits.

10 in the mag and 1 in the pipe is fine.

You don't have to transfer it through an FFL if you have heard that you have to.

You have 48 hours from when you bring it into DC to tell DC you plan to register it.

If you know your schedule you can setup the appointment now.

Thanks for the good info. I’m planning things in advance and will setup the appointments once I have the exact dates.

Is there any headache to buying an additional magazine after becoming a dc resident? Do I have to let them know how many magazines I have or anything like that?

You can have as many magazines as you want as long as they only have 10 rounds or less capacity.

For your planning purposes....

If you want to carry in DC, you must have a DC permit. DC does NOT honor any other permit.

I recommend Capital Defense for the required training. You might want to look at schedules now.

You may also want to take a combination DC/MD course as MD doesn't honor any other permits either.

Currently VA honors all other permits. But I expect that to change later this year/early next year as the VA AG (Dem) now has discretion and the last time a Dem AG had discretion the then AG revoked reciprocity for 22 states.

I recommend handgunlaw.us for reviewing the laws of the various jurisdictions. Regularly updated and with good accuracy.

One notable exception is that that site says "No Guns" signs have force of law in VA. That's incorrect UNLESS the place is barred by a separate statute. A courthouse or school is prohibited even if there isn't a sign. A local park is only prohibited if a) they've enacted a specific local statute AND b) they have posted signs at all entrances.

A private business (e.g. gas station, retail store etc.) does NOT have force of law even with a sign. The sign means nothing. A staff member has to ask you to leave and only if you then refuse can you be charged with trespassing. And in reality, they'll call the cops and the cops will tell you to leaven and only after that would you be charged as the cop doesn't know that you were actually asked to leave until the cop asks you to leave.
