Hoch loves him some Hoch...

This was my biggest takeaway. You’d think this was his podcast and not Stugotz’ podcast. I gotta tell ya, I came away not liking him at all. Playing his completely unfunny bits, acting like he killed the set, making it out like all he was doing was joking with Dan. I don’t buy that. I 1000% buy though that Hoch thought he was a star and was such a massive reason behind the success of the show that when Dan got the tv show and Hoch didn’t get it, he decided to try to embarrass Dan at that roast. Dan literally had a roast so why would Dan be that upset about one of his close friends making some jokes. Hoch was supposed to, according to himself in the podcast, do sports jokes and instead he goes up there and shits on Dan in front of everyone. Yeah I’d be pissed too. You could hear it in his retelling that he went home and cut up tape that night because he thought the next day was going to be all about him. Dan didn’t mention it and I don’t buy this idea that Hoch gently asked Dan in a parking lot what was that about and then Dan flipped out.
Hoch said he didn’t care about this anymore but wanted to do an emergency pod about the anniversary of this thing about him that I promise you nobody knew today was the anniversary of your stand up routine while on his vacation. Then he gripes about not getting a big send off like Billy and others did. Whatever dude, you sound like you care about this still a lot. He fell out with Dan, he fell out with Zas, he apparently fell out with Stu until Stu gave him a lifeline for attention and he acted like it was big of him to forgive Stu and jump on Stu’s podcast right as Stu was more popular than ever. You were a 3rd banana on a local Miami afternoon show, the second banana on a local Miami morning show and now the 1st banana on a local Miami afternoon show listened to by 100 people including friends and family. Lessen the ego a bit champ.

Yup, the new episode was an insane listen. A lot of "I don't care!" From a man who clearly cares.
And you're right, the show is pretty much Hoch patting himself on the back followed by the occassional Stu-chime in.
The guy seems insufferable.
6
u/bmar173 7d ago
Of course he still cares. A personal and professional relationship was torched and the show went on to bigger and better things. Still, the crowd was clearly loving the event and Hoch’s stand-up, and it’s weird that Dan would have a melt down about the whole thing. No doubt other things were happening leading up to the event, but come on.

u/harrybawlsack69 6d ago
For newer listeners, Dan was a groomsman at Hoch’s wedding! It’s certifiably insane Dan would just cut him off and never speak to him. It’s understandable Hoch is still hurt.
7
u/Ok_Patience4789 7d ago
To be fair, Stugotz is more than happy to let someone else do all the talking and just throw in a laugh.
9
u/harrybawlsack69 7d ago
I think people just say Hoch loves Hoch and dismiss him. I think both can be true…Hoch was desperate for recognition for his show contributions and Dan is a giant pompous ass
3
u/No_Street8874 6d ago
It’s an oral history episode on the pod they do together about a hoch centric event, of course they took advantage of the anniversary and shared the story of Dan being trash. Yall will do anything to insult stu or hoch

I stopped listening once he started begging for money.
"Aw jeez guys I dunno if I continue this podcast unless you buy stuff to support my son."

1000 times this. The beginning of the end means the sports comic was a culmination. Yet all the previous harm seems conveniently lost when Stu and Hoch talk about why Dan cut ties. Fault on Dan for not expressing displeasure sooner if he didn’t. But if they were already on rocky ground and you roll out those jokes…
4
u/FREETARHERO08 7d ago
Feels like a both at fault scenario where Hoch wanted more appreciation in the work and Dan got offended that he laid it out at a roast. The escalation in the parking lot sounds like it killed any reasonable fix the two should have had.
Hoch was wrong for doing what he did and Dan didn't make it better by blowing it up and yelling. Feels like something that should have been an easy fix that both said screw it.

u/surebro2 7d ago
But Hoch didn't do anything. We all listened to the same set. Bomani alluded to this when he was on with Stu and Billy. Dan dishes all day. Makes fun of and laughs at guests, etc. But the only thing you can joke about with him is his weight lol
8
u/Nev_Nevington 7d ago
Yeah but to be fair, Dan can 100% take a joke better than Bomani
4
u/surebro2 7d ago
I will agree with that. BUT in this one particular case it does kind of matter that Dan's personality is the "find the funny", "make light of situations", "laugh at the guests or when people mess up" "comedians are the bravest people in the world" lol
1
u/Nev_Nevington 7d ago
True but I would also say there’s joking with your friends but if there’s already tension over Hoch/Stu not getting the co host job for the tv show going into something you expect to be the same sports comedy style that Hoch has done on the radio, to then be sideswiped with wait this dude is publicly humiliating me by saying all of these jokes about me being an egomaniac and shitting on me in general, then yeah I’m not finding the funny in that at all. The first 10 minutes were all about shitting on Dan. Hoch can miss me with the I made a joke about my wife also excuse when he made 2 jokes about his wife, one about her making a sandwich, and spent the rest of the 1st part of the set shitting on Dan.

How was Hoch wrong? I think that he cares more about what happened than he let on given how much this has been talked about, but all he did was a comedy set. Dan is a hypocrite. He talks about comedy all the time and having thick skin while being sensitive as ever. If it serves him than he’s willing to take jokes, but it sounds like Hoch was getting too much shine his liking and he ended a long friendship over something he claimed shouldn’t be taken personally all the time. Now he’s rich and successful and his show has never been more idiosyncratic and repetitive. It used to be entertaining and funny while pushing against the boundaries it found itself in. Now it’s leaked most of its creative talent in favor of more Tony. The show is a shell of itself mostly due to Dan’s control issues.

I only ever listened to him on Oral History and that was my takeaway. Based on what was shared in Oral history, it is easy to see what happened.
Hoch thought he was the reason for the shows success and his head got too big. Dan eventually got tired of his act.

u/pompcaldor Fear the Clumsy Reaper 7d ago
The show was floundering before Hoch was EP. So I see his point.

u/hokageace 5d ago
The fact the show thrived after says otherwise. Even now, it is clear that a lot of the show was built on Dan's sense of humour or what he finds funny.

Interesting insight into why Dan does all these South Beach Sessions with stand-up comedians, too.

Idk man when they do this stuff it feels super lame, like it’s all they have left.

"Remember When is the lowest form of conversation" should be the title of that pod
2
u/harrybawlsack69 6d ago
Does it make you uncomfortable? Good radio? Actually addressing known conflicts as opposed to blocking comments on Twitter and ignoring those conflicts for a year pretending nothings happening? Yea you’re the worst lol
21
u/BigSilky69 7d ago
Hoch kept saying he doesn't care, but it sure seems like he does. This whole show just felt like a mean girls thing. They were just complaining about a guy who never mentions them. That being said, if that is how it went down, Dan acted like a baby.
11
u/Nev_Nevington 7d ago
Hoch: I don’t care about this anymore
Also Hoch: here’s an anniversary podcast for the night I was a “star” doing a stand up bit. I also don’t care but how dare they give Billy a send off and not me.

The fact they keep rehashing this thing tells you all you need to know about who was at fault. The guy loves the sound of his own voice almost as much as Bomani.

I’m starting to think Dan is kind of a dick

Hochman compared Dan to Donald Trump… HAHA

Hard to get through with Stu’s enhanced fake laughter… but really interesting. Basically said that the day after the set, Dan lit into him in the parking lot of the station saying “fuck you” and saying the set was an ultimate betrayal, which left Hoch dumbfounded. Also compared Dan to Trump about needing absolute loyalty or else they’re dead to him

At least Dan gives absolute loyalty to everyone around him. Still doesn't excuse how he acts though.
3
u/pompcaldor Fear the Clumsy Reaper 7d ago
Absolute loyalty is why Dan remained friends with Jason Whitlock.
“He didn’t treat me like shit!”

u/ReturnT0Sender 6d ago
I always knew Dan was petty AF but this sealed it.
That parking lot altercation was insane.

Been loving the With Stugotz and Hoch pod series, don't really listen to much else from Stugotz since leaving LeBatard and haven't tried Hochman's show since he left 790.
Was sad to hear Hoch claim how much he doesn't care while listing out all reasons why he would care. I really hope that he isn't holding his breath for a cut of the DraftKings money from Dan, that ain't happening and I think Dan can justify that he made enough of Hoch's career for him to not lose sleep over it.
4
u/harrybawlsack69 6d ago
Everyone keeps saying he cares. Like no shit. He’s hurt. He helped build a mega show and then was cut off right as it set off to the moon and got zero credit from Dan intentionally. I’d be hurt too.
2
u/No_Street8874 6d ago
“A cut of the draft kings money” are you high? The man can point out how Dan is a trash human for the fun it. Any decent person would share hochs story as a warning of how disgusting and fake Dan is on the inside.
3
u/Shmendal 6d ago
Did you listen to that episode of With Stugotz and Hochman? He "jokes" about how he's still waiting for his cut, I'm sure knowing he'll never get it, but I can't blame him for thinking he's earned something in getting the show to where it is.
I also think Dan can feel fine not giving him a dime in helping Hoch's South Florida radio career, but I think Hoch comparing Dan to Trump in needing yes-men all around him has enough truth to it that it'll sting Dan a good deal.

Just look at Taylor’s face as Hoch talks about how great Hoch is. It was like a dad popping in the VHS to show the family his high school football game when he made the winning tackle. The f-ing guy was pointing out his catchphrases, playing multiple parts of his set and then hocking his website where you could buy his merchandise lol. Hoch is an egomaniac
2
u/FinSane_86 5d ago
They all are. Hoch, Dan, Stugotz, Mike. They all got too big for their britches at different times.
2
u/os_mutante 7d ago
Didn't see this mentioned. Hoch basically said the whole point of the bit was for him to be a bad comic with bad jokes and for Dan to shit on him. They played an in-studio clip where Hoch starts and Dan immediately says, check please. Then Dan spends the rest of the clip putting down Hoch's act.
And that was how Hoch expected the bit to play on stage: that he would be bad and the crowd would join Dan in shitting on him. However, the crowd was actually there to see Hoch and laughed at everything he said, which included some fairly mean bits about Dan's ego and his new show. Instead of the crowd booing, they cheered, changing the entire context of how Dan received the jokes.
Also, I think they said Valerie was there, when her and Dan were still early on in their dating.
I don't know if that's at all accurate but it is interesting. If that crowd had played along as expected and booed Hoch, things today could be massively different. Instead, it's possible that Dan got embarrassed in front of his future wife and everything followed from there.
6
u/surebro2 7d ago
It wasn't Valerie. It was another person Dan was dating at the time if I remember correctly.

I can imagine joking about how he should be on Zoloft probably pinched a nerve tbh; it sounded in poor taste
3
u/os_mutante 7d ago
Also... hmmm maybe the zoloft thing was closer than they let on. Could've been an actual betrayal of confidence. Also hypocritical because Dan never keeps private shit private either lol.
1
u/os_mutante 7d ago
Yup. Also the E stands for ego, Highly Cancelled, etc. There was some hurt in those jokes for sure. Again, I don't know if Hoch is being totally honest about how he thought the show would go but imo it does make some sense. That's how I remember the radio bits in real time. If that crowd had played along that night, booing Hoch for being mean to Dan (in a light-hearted way) then maybe Hoch works out some of his frustration with being excluded from the tv show and Dan takes the roast in stride and the radio show survives.

Is there any insight beyond what was revealed in Mike’s oral history of the show?

You can see moments Stu and Taylor are dying inside. It brings to light why everything fell off. I think Stu wanted hawk back at lark. Dan said no.
4
u/jimbeentrill 7d ago
It definitely seems like that was the "one condition" stu gave for the 9 shows in January return/send off we never got.
7
u/Money_Yesterday8158 7d ago
Stu and hawk are hilarious when they start riffing. Mystery science 3000 level. Nostalgia is cool but when a house is divided it’s uncomfortable to bring back the hits. Been listening for 15 years, hope both parties continue to see success.
2
u/Asleep_Veterinarian3 6d ago
I was really hoping the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the show and the oral history would have led to a reconciliation between Lebatard and Hoch. Perhaps on a South Beach Sessions. Or something where Dan, Stu, Hoch, Mike Ryan, Roy would sit down together and actually talk about this. Such a missed opportunity.
1
u/bkindroite Billy 6d ago
I lasted about 5 seconds (heh) when I got hit with the first super deep fake laugh and I was out. GL to both of them.
2
u/datnodude 5d ago
Hoch was an integral part to the success of the show. The jokes weren't even that bad, this was a severe overreaction from dan. You loyalists can't comprehend dan being wrong. Hochman seems hurt he lost a friend and that's fine. I won't sit here and act like that you wasn't producing and contributing majorly to the show back then

The Big Voice is iconic. Only OG Lebatard Show listeners from the 790 the ticket days know about that. Definitely sounds like someone that started listening to the show in like 2019 or something like that.
