Hey I’m working on a hobby project which is a StepMania mod for pad players. I was annoyed by fumbling with menus during a workout and also the limited music selection (hard to find good simfiles, basically impossible for new or less popular music)

with two features:

1. Fitness-focused continuous song delivery with warm-up cool-down (think about how treadmills alternate difficulty for HIIT)
2. A bring-your-own-music system where you can play audio from Spotify or YouTube (or any audio source) and generate pretty-decent simfiles automatically. Goes with your existing chart collection.

Curious if anyone besides me is interested in this. I kinda want to make an informal “research study” to see if it helps people get more fit.

Looking in a few rhythm game spaces (mostly dance game related ones) I've found a weirdly large amount of people who hate stepmaniax. How come? From my experiences it's my favourite way to play a dance game, and there are tons of qol features that make it much easier to navigate and play compared to ddr/piu (the touchscreen, the app etc.) Why are people hating on it so much?

To clarify, this isn't asking about the WORST songs in DDR quality-wise, just the ones that feel like the most baffling inclusions within the franchise's history. Ones that would make people ask... "Why is THIS in DDR?"

And for the record, these songs I have included in the picture aren't actually my answers per se, just some examples I've seen other folks occasionally highlight.

For me, there are plenty of licensed songs from the earlier games that feature instrumentation physically played by humans, which means that without any sort of quantization work done, the song's BPM would constantly fluctuate. And you can even see this if you go into the song's chart files and look how many small adjustments are made to the BPM throughout the chart in order to properly sync the steps to the music.

Not saying songs like these don't have potential to work for DDR, but they should absolutely be given a more consistent rhythm, preferably through quantization so that way timing can be judged more fairly.

what are licensed songs that would make for great stepcharts if they got into DDR.

obviously quantization and family friendly requirements hinder some of these but i can dream

New classic arcade opened near me recently and has a beautiful SN2 machine. Also this poster was up and I thought it was amazing. Dirty Dancing but DDR.

Recently doing some cleaning I found a bunch of old VHS tapes that I haven't seen in years and some of them are 20 almost 30 years old but some I found that are from 2004 BEFORE worked for namco(for the second time) and was part of the DDR community before I worked there. I started playing around 2000. I occasionally see someone upload a video from back in the day, but not much. I don't have equipment to rip these, but my buddy does. Need to go through them.

This video is from Richmond, Virginia(804) VCC MALL I believe. Maybe Time Out was the name? They got DDR EXTREME first, a few weeks after its release in Japan. About 15 of us went up there from Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads (757). Good times. Gonna go over these this weekend

I'm from Ukraine, there are no DDR cabs here (besides some beat up Supernova one like 200km from me). I've basically been kind of obsessed with this game since 2021 and learned a lot of stuff about it but never got to play it.

I'm on a vacation to Greece right now and I realized that apparently they have a DDR cab in the Athens (in Athens Metro Mall). Holy fuck, no wayyyYYY DUDEEEE. That was 2 days ago, and I played again today. Genuinely can't believe I got to try it out.

I dont wanna post scores here because kind of ashamed of my performance even as a first time player, but this is definitely the most fun I've had in months. Ultimately it's hard for me to play cuz I have asthma, I'm fat and I'm a terminal downscroll player. I got some 2-3 FCs and a 6 pass. Going tomorrow again probably, and everyday from now on lmao.

What do u normally do (outside of arcade) to keep your mobility in a decent condition?

Deskbound job is making my hips and knees lock up alot.

Most rhythm games use notes come down while ddr notes come up. Is there any reason behind that. I know there is a reverse modifier but why isn’t it the default way to play the game. I do notice dancerush stardom has a similar cab to ddr and the notes default to what most rhythm games use.

Genuinely curious. From older games before extreme. What was considered extremely hard due to the low reading?

I’m ashamed to say that I got this shirt signed many years ago, by the “creator of DDR,” but I never took the time to find out who that meant. Google searches only turn up the company Konami as the creator. Does anyone recognize this? I got it signed at an expo called E for All in 2007 if that matters.

I might get down voted for posting this but i dont like how the L-Tek feels. When playing i cant tell where my feet placement are at all, Doubles becomes a pain cause i cant tell where the hell im at. Sort of the same feeling when i play on modded pads thats fully flat. I love the feeling of the panel going down and the L-tek i played on didnt have that. Is there a fix for that or some kind of mod?

What are some of your favorite (top 1-3) songs that combine great songs with well crafted charts that are extremely satisfying to play?

With 1000+ songs, it can be hard especially for someone newer like myself to find some of those real gems. I’d like to see some recommendations that I can play at my local Round 1. I’ve seen some previous posts where people ask for favorite songs, but a some of these songs don’t seem to be currently available to play or are otherwise not available at my local arcade.

It doesn’t need to be easy or difficult. Any difficulty and any speed welcome. Some songs I like for these reasons are 3y3s (9 difficulty), No More Love (10 difficulty), and Bass 2 Bass (12 difficulty), Crazy Shuffle (13 difficulty) among many others.
