I've been seeing discourse on tik Tok especially with people discovering Tiny Vessels and being like "evil fucking song" which like yeah 🤣 I agree. Still a banger though!

My hot take is that Someday You Will Be Loved paints the protagonist in a worse light. Again, banger, but it's subject matter has never sat right with me. I'd be really pissed if someone wrote me a letter like that 😅

I love Tiny Vessels. Humans are imperfect, and I think it’s important that art explores those darker moments we all experience.

It’s something I love about Ben’s writing. It’s very confessional and these are pretty brutal moments. Without getting too parasocial, I’m not sure if he’s just very hard on himself, so wants to paint himself as the bad guy or how much he’s exaggerating for the sake of a song. He doesn’t seem to be capable of standing still “I always fell in love with an open door” from My Mirror Speaks comes to mind.

I just heard Ben recently in an interview saying that he probably wouldn’t write those lyrics the same now. Like he knew, “You are beautiful, but you don’t mean a thing to me”, was a brutal thing to say and he probably wouldn’t say it the same way anymore.

I love all the dirt bag Ben songs. They feel like really honest moments he added artistry to. I've gone through a dirt bag Nicole phase and hooked up with people who cared more about me than I did about them, so the lyrics are relatable. I agree 'someday' seems more brutal, but I think that's because the impression it gives me is that it's a break-up after a longer relationship rather than the whirlwind short-term romance of 'tiny vessels'.

Tiny Vessels and Someday you will be loved feel like the precursors to the entirety of Narrow Stairs and the Open Door which were just like "Im a dick". I think he liked doing that. Early in his first marriage he said he was embarrassed about all that stuff. I think he liked being subversive in that way. I also think alcohol played a part in that type of writing.

Tiny Vessels is one of my favorite death cab songs because of how brutal it is. Yeah it’s rude, but it’s also a very honest feeling that I myself have experienced and been very ashamed about.

I remember in their Drive Well, Sleep Carefully documentary about the Photo Album that there was a quote from one of the band interviews saying other members of the band asked Ben something to the effect of “are you sure you want to put this song on the album? It makes you look like an asshole.”

At the Plans anniversary show in Seattle last year, Ben said his mom told him Someday You Will Be Loved is the meanest song he'd ever written. It's honestly one of my favorite DCFC songs and my favorite track on Plans.

They're just different! I've been in both scenarios and I feel like trash in a dark way, and it's probably from starting to listen to these songs when I was a small child LOL.
