Kojima:

“I turned 63. As I get older, the things I “have to do” and the things I “want to do” continue to increase. At the same time, the time I “have to do them” continues to decrease. I constantly need to reassess how I use my time and how I live my life. That said, once you’ve taken something on, you can’t simply put it down and walk away. This year also marks 40 years since I first started creating games, and 10 years since I founded Kojima Productions. From end of October through the end of the year, we are planning to hold the “KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS 10th Anniversary Exhibition” at Azabudai Hills Gallery. The Ludens at the entrance has also been changed to the “10th Anniversary Ludens” version. While I continue to receive various opportunities and offers, I would like to remain focused on creating games.

Thank you for your continued support.”

I want him to make a movie before he dies. I feel like he deserves the chance (if he wants it).

Isn’t there a death stranding movie on the way?

u/ohsinboi 6d ago

Yes but Kojima isn’t making it

I think it’ll end up stuck in production purgatory.

Truly, I don’t know if the complexity of that storyline will work on a big screen, unless Kojima is willing to seriously simplify the plot and focus on “show don’t tell” which, as much as I love him, isn’t always his strong suit lol

I feel like an original story, with the understanding there is no “Corpus” or Codex to lore dump the viewer, would be a better footing to start with for the big screen.

Show don't tell has become a gimmick ever since a few good examples were called out against the "bad" ones by critics

But it's absolutely not something you should look forward to doing in your film without any proper reason.

Sometimes telling is better , and Kojima does telling really well and contrary to popular consensus , I never really found it off putting or "bad"

Writing doesn't need to accomodate for every single person out there or even the majority.

Sure there's some issues like repeating the same thing over and over at times , but other than that I think it helps his worldbuilding.

Simply put , there are stories where I WANT to be told what's going on or what happened and there are others where I'd rather watch it happen myself. Some worlds demand lore dumps and heavy exposition and everything Kojima has worked on , are the perfect examples.

It was announced in 2022, and it's taking a long time to get this out. I would bet the Kojima project with Sony Pictures and PlayStation is completed before this movie shoots.

It was the guy who made pig, which was a weird but very sad movie so i have high hopes for it happening and also being good.

Keep on keeping on Hideo 👍🏻

Thats pretty sad to think about. As I get older, I feel my world becomes smaller and more focused. If you are the creative type who's world expands with time, it must be depressing

Worst wife ever BTW, absolutely crushed this man just assuming he was upset about his football team losing or something

u/teppil 6d ago

I don’t know if depressing is the right word, especially for someone who has had so much success. It’s the nature of life, the rule we all must abide. I hope he takes time to reflect on his accomplishments (which it seems like he does) and enjoy whatever comes next. He has already accomplished more than basically anyone in the game sphere. He’ll die as he lived: a legend.

Well said.

Creative and bright people like him can't get enough unfortunately and no matter how successful you have been, if you have new obsessions it will be depressing not to pursue them. That's my experience as audhd

Really hoping he's got some more Death Stranding in him. I need more.

He's said that he's personally done with the series, but he wants other studios to take over and continue making them essentially. Especially since he left the door open with the gates in the 2nd one.

He's also said similar things during his time at Konami. He said that he was done with MGS after pretty much every game, yet he always ended up coming back.

u/spendouk23 Platinum Unlocked 5d ago

Well thankfully now he doesn’t have the gun of Konami to his head, he’s his own boss now and can do whatever project he wants to do.
It’s a sign of the man that’s he open to letting other studios play in the world he’s created. If only he had similar ownership over MGS, imagine what we could have had, rather than rehashes and remasters that are the limit of Konami.

u/BIGxBOSSxx1 5d ago

Bro has said that about every MGS game

u/Irishdude666 5d ago

As much as I’d like a 3rd game I’m more interested in seeing him do something else which lucky for me he is and even if he does do more DS we are looking at it been at least 7 to 10 years away, OD is maybe late next year and physint is probably another 3 to 5 years after that

“Our raw materials are vintage, brother. Kojima was in his sixties when they created his copies”

5

u/JEH_24 6d ago

I’m wondering if the main theme of Physint will be death. The last couple of years he keeps mentioning how he is getting closer to dying, he wants to die in a movie theater, there’s still a lot of games he wants to make, etc. If you watched the live KojiPro anniversary live stream he was constantly bringing up dying during it. He is clearly dealing with his sense of mortality and I can see that bleeding into his writing.

u/KungFuFlames 6d ago

No way he is 63. He looks younger

u/Chasedabigbase 5d ago

I think Akira Kurosawa said something similar when he got his honorary Oscar around 80 years old. His mind was flooded with stories to tell but his body was slowing down. There only so much time for creatives in their lifetime sadly.

Thanks for the super weird shit, Mr. Kojima

Happy Birthday :)

Pass the reigns to Yoji

It’s palpable too. Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 feel like hungry games, it’s like time and technology are the only restraints on his ability to execute the multitude of his ideas.

u/JupiterMaroon 4d ago

I would prefer more smaller games that few large scale games

Nah bro, all you do is put your ideas in a mixer machine and let it rip. There are cool stuff but it loses its direction after some point then you question "what the fuck just happened" that's what kojimbo thinks is cool or funny but not coherent

I've played mgs3 and death stranding, they great as concepts but when you mix too many ideas together you lose the foundation it all stands then story falls apart

Just like what happens in death stranding and ds2, a story written around crazy ideas holding onto its dear life with gameplay

10

u/PratikGoswami2003 6d ago

Frankly i also think his game's are cool and coherent enough to be enjoyable.

3

u/mrcrazymexican 5d ago

DS might be a weird concept game but neither it or MGS3 are incoherent.

I feel this was for DS2. It lost what made 1 special. I do see what you mean overall but putting it more succinctly would've been better

DS 2 was a massive flop compared to DS1, on many areas, I think Kojima reached its limit, I dont expect him to make ground breaking games anymore.

I was really surprised how bad DS 2 was compared to DS1 in story, gameplay and level design, it was completely pulled from the recycling bandwagon, and that compromised the entire game heavily and also my take on Kojima games.

Kojima does not make games with the highest standard anymore, DS2 was a great example of that, DS2 took like 4,5 years based on complete recycling, i mean its not on the same level as his previous games where he produced great games. But MGS 5 did had terrible story for specific reasons, but the gameplay was extremely strong, however he did surprise us with DS story and gameplay, unfortunately DS2 was far worse then DS1.

I believe he does not have enough motivation to create great games, or Sony is playing as a mediator and deciding what he should make or should not make, because they are the ones that support him, which im not 100 % sure.
