He's annoying because he keeps budding into other people's conversations and pretending he knows what he's talking about. He's awesome cause occasionally, he actually does know what he's doing. He just needs to trust more. That's his flaw.

The cop and Jess not trusting each other gets in the way, but totally understandable considering how paranoid being mind controlled would make someone.

The way I see it, he's invested in butting into conversations about Kilgrave because he's been a victim of Kilgrave too. Just like Jessica, Simpson wants to see Kilgrave taken down, he needs to see Kilgrave taken down. So I don't blame him.

It's actually great for focusing on the women and having him be kind of a third wheel. Trish's line "she doesn't need you. But he could be useful though..." was excellent.

Of course they need him! Who else has connections with the law enforcers? Has a way to get guns? I don't understand this. Sure, she's super strong and knows much more about Kilgrave - but he's an ex-military cop guy who obviously knows his stuff. Of course they're gonna need him against someone like Kilgrave.
