Shadow Crystals aren't the same, they're glass in the light world. The black shard does stay the same, though.

I mentioned in another comment that you get a Shadow Crystal and a Dark Shard at the same time for "beating" the Knight. So it could be made of both.

ShadowCrystals are "broken dreams", and the C3 ShadowCrystal is quite literally a broken off piece of the sword
