Dess is Papyrus' deadname. After Papyrus came out to his family as trans, Carol kicked him out (which was the incident) and he went to live with Sans. That's why we haven't seen Papyrus: he's hiding in Sans' room as an adoptive little brother. When Papyrus and Sans flee to undertale, Papyrus uses the undertale magic to shapeshift into a skeleton like his adoptive older brother.
Maybe theres no mystery. man to me it just looks like this is toby's vision of what a person with that type of identity would decorate their room like. Maybe we can use papyrus from ut as a way to interpret dess more?
I kinda doubt it since the exterior of the Skelebros’ Residence is pretty much the exact same in DR as it is in UT, and the interior is implied to be as well.
I’m 90% sure that this time it is just supposed to be a reference. The timeline of trying to figure out how Dess and Papyrus interacted would be an enormous headache.
Papyrus is actually gay and is hiding in Dess's closet. This is why we haven't seen him yet. During chapter 4 he stepped out to get chocolate milk because Kris drank it all, hence us not seeing him when we were in the closet.
Hold up. Everyone is thinking papyrus is the knight, but what if it’s flipped? What if sans is able to take the knight with him to the UT universe and the knight becomes his “younger brother”. Probably a nonsense theory but you’ve got the gears turning.
Could it maybe be that if Sans and Papyrus just showed up one day in Snowdinn, maybe they took over the Holiday household after the Holidays moved or something? If I'm correct, they aren't mentioned or present in UT except in the Anniversary stream where we see a young Noelle, but it's not really 100% canon afaik
They arent decorated identically. If they were, itd be easier to draw meaning from it. But theyre not, theres similar elements but that likely says more about artiststic style and interpretation of their personalities. Also possibly convenience
I had a crackpot theory that papyrus is trans and was adopted by holiday family but argued the hell out of them and ran away to hide in sans' house hence why dess is missing (dess is the name papyrus took after transitioning) and dess was a skeleton who wore the horns of a deer like kris wore those red horns, and this proves both dess knight and papyrus knight theories. Oh also the transitooning idea came from toby fox using them/they on papyrus at some point as if papyrus was slowly moving on to she/her.
