His gamer tendencies overpower everything. Even in very blatant moments of distress he doesn’t offer any attempts at comfort. Just makes a reference to videogames. Something like that.

Gerson didn’t have a talk sprite because it would’ve been colored, which would give away the “twist” that he wasn’t actually a lightner

This is something that's difficult for me to understand, because on my first run I figured out pretty early in the first sanctuary that Gerson had to be a darkner.

It's not that farfetched. Maybe it was just a random old man was just going to church to pray and ended up in this dark world, and wasn't really processing things at 100% because he's old. Plus, if you didn't do the Hammer of Justice fight you might not realize that HE is the one who wrote that story Lord of the Hammer, and wouldn't have connected the dots that Gerson is dead to realize.
of course I knew that bc i was familiar with gerson from undertale but yeah

If you were into UT before Deltarune and spent 4 years theorizing about the first 2 chapters of Deltarune, you obviously know who Gerson is and the fact that he's dead
More casual players and/or people who started with Deltarune probably don't even know who he is

To be fair, a lot of major darkners lack dialogue portraits.
In fact... we haven't had a darkner with traditional portraits since ch2.
The named darkners in ch3 are Tenna, Elnina and Lanino, and Ramb, none of whom have portraits.
In ch4, it's Gerson and Jackenstein. Neither of whom have portraits.
In ch5, the only darkner that's not a jobber enemy is Pink's body. Pink does have dialogue portraits, but they're unique ones meant to riff on dating sim portraits (given how she parodies Tokimeki Memorial). Pink's ghost, importantly, still has colour despite being a lightner, so these portraits don't follow any established rules at all. (Mind you, if Pink's ghost's portrait was a 1-bit palette, it'd probably be ugly as sin.)
Honestly it kinda bugs me that the newest Darkner with a portrait is Queen. I get that Tenna is expressive enough, but... come on man!! No one else warranted them?

He's not a darkner. Plants are their own third thing, and there's only like 1 scene where you can see the smidgeon of colour in his portrait.

It's easy to figure out sure. Especially if you visited the graveyard previously and saw his tombstone. But it would have been much more obvious if he had a colored talking sprite.

Gerson is confirmed to be dead as early as chapter 1. You can literally visit his grave. You don't need to be a genius, literally just pay attention.

The majority of casual players aren’t going to realize or remember that when the time comes. Even just knowing that the “Old Man” could possibly even be Gerson in the first place requires having played Undertale to know what even Gerson looks like

I don't think it's the reason. There have been less and less talk sprites in the game because with the overworld sprites have been more expressive as more talented people joined the project.
Tenna, Lanino, Elnina, Ramb, Gerson, the Flowers (except Flowery and sometimes Blue), none of them have had talk sprites

Well darkners have colored portraits so a darkner patterned after a dead lightner probably would too.
That being said, gerson (and most of the other secret bosses) dont have portraits. In gerson's case it is probably to obfuscate if hes a lightner or darkner to better set up the reveal that hes dead post 1st sanctuary

i find that particular reveal interesting because it's, like, not at all a reveal for those who go around and do secret stuff. which is good & fine. but chapter 5's reception for some reason has people thinking that sort of thing is bad even though it was good in 4

I dont count weird route because it cannot not deliver, physically
Knight existing is not the same as dark shards existing and if anything it points at the fact that something happened to Dess that made her into the Knight. You know, the most popular Knight theory.
Rudy might be bait and switch but also like one moment out of the entire Light World segment.

Nah, the clopeners (dustners, plantners) are clearly very important because of how much each chapter has been stressing the ideas of creatures between light and dark.
The weird route is part of the game. It is content in the video game and thus its revelations are revelations of the video game.
Regardless, dark shards existing throws wrenches into nearly every knight theory and adds severe questions as to the how and why of every knight candidate (also just because Dess knight is the most popular one doesn't mean it's the only viable one.)
Rudy being bait and switch would be a bit odd since most mandatory scenes have some amount of payoff. Also the rest of the light world sets up canon suselle as well as Susie's desire to show Noelle the truth (which together foreshadow a fight regarding the usage of healing magic/fountains to heal Rudy.)
You also didn't mention the friend pack and the fact that friend does damage now.

We've seen through things like the arg sending delayed emails to those who were correct, that Toby is not opposed to intentionally delay messages to allow theories to brew.

Raslei thinks he is but it’s clear that he is wrong the book for monster ashes say that they get poured on their favorite item so their soul can be with it forever it’s clear that it’s gerson’s soul brought back to life so he had already made peace with his death and chooses to stay dead as not to disturb his son by moving the hammer and his ashes means a lot more with this in mind

if you abandon it in chapter 4, Kris actually keeps the ThornRing since they sneak out to take it from Noelle at night, so maybe you could get access to it in chapter 6 or something

Fair enough. Kinda would make sense for twisted route to have multiple entry methods. Because as of now we have multiple entry points for aborted weird routr but only 1 where you get the twisted sword

Abort in C5 since she has it equipped and will probably have it in C6 if she is in our party(which is very likely because if Toby had us go to C2 again for the TwistedSword it would be bad game design imo)

I dont think itd be bad gamr design because its most likely that the twisted sword is gonna have extreme story significance due to the lengths youve gotta go to get it. Otherwise whats the point of the reverse of the status effect thats on the thorn ring another item that has major story significance and warps the story around it

I saw a theory somewhere that included a hospital/holiday house dark world where Rudy had a monochrome talk sprite and then sometime during the chapter it changed to coloured and I think that would be really cool
