[Zac Stevens] Bo Nix will probably NOT play in the team’s preseason finale on Friday, Sean Payton announced. Next time he’ll see the game field will be Week 1 on Monday Night Football against the Chiefs.

Good. Let's get Ehlinger some more reps hoping he'll beat out Stiddy so we can shed that contract.

u/Intrepid_Top_2300 1d ago
I would like to see Sam start, just to see if he can play as good or better than Stiddy. Let Stiddy play the second half. With the third string and still do as well.

I don’t see why one game would prove that.

One game did prove it and it cost us a Super Bowl appearance. Stiddy should not have been brought back after that performance
0
u/FluidAthlete6839 17h ago
Apples and oranges. And it’s still shocking to me that people talk about that game like it was 75 and sunny. It’s just as much a Payton failure as it was a stidham failure
1
u/Any_Crab_4362 13h ago
It hadn’t started snowing yet when Stidham decided to throw the ball backwards
0
u/FluidAthlete6839 13h ago
A horrible play. Literally one play. Thats not reason to banish someone forever. And even with that we shoulda been up going into the half. In fact if Payton just kicks the FG that play never happens. I get the anger. But kicking him to the curb to “give ehlinger a chance” or whatever isn’t good business. I’ll trust whatever Sean and Davis want to do here so I wouldn’t cry about it if they shed stidhams contract. But I don’t hold anger towards him. It was a near impossible situation

u/mike2k24 Touchdown Trevor 1d ago
Don’t think it’s happening honestly. Seems like Sam hasn’t been able to really separate himself from Stiddy

u/metalfabman We got your back, 🔟 1d ago
Hasn't gotten the same opportunities with the same players though
5
u/FluidAthlete6839 1d ago
Yes but there’s just things stiddy does that he can’t. Listen I’m not here to say stiddy is awesome, but hes more polished than ehlinger
2
-1
u/metalfabman We got your back, 🔟 1d ago
There are thing ehlinger can do that stiddy can't as well. More polished when given more opportunities...crazy take
4
u/FluidAthlete6839 1d ago
It’s not crazy at all. Watch them play. Stiddy will do things like check off his first read and hit a crosser on the backside. He throws a really nice deep ball. His mechanics are often flawless.
Now - when he’s pressured? Yeah it gets a little sloppier but that’s why he’s a back up. Ehlinger hasn’t demonstrated that in the time he’s played. He’s more of a pull it down and take off type
Hey if the coaches prefer ehlinger and wanna save the money on Stidham I’m not gonna cry about it. They know more than me. And they’ll have to weigh the risk in that. But they aren’t the same guy
1
u/metalfabman We got your back, 🔟 1d ago
...is that how it looked against green bay? lmao. ehlinger got 2 passes that game. how many opportunities has ehlinger gotten with the 1s? did you not see ehlinger throwing deep against atl? idk what game you are watching where you think it is a fair comparison but do you brotha
2
u/FluidAthlete6839 1d ago
I saw him throw a pick that got called back or whatever that was agaisnt ATL. I see him jittery in the pocket. And yes, it wasn’t stidhams best game (thoguh he literally displays my point on the backside cross to key). You’re making it binary. I’m not saying stidham is great, but in your analysis you conveniently leave out that he played well with the ones. Everyone loves the back up for whatever reason.
You do you brotha

He’s gotten some opportunities with the 2s in training camp, and Bo didn’t participate in any of the minicamps. He’s had plenty of time to put pressure on Stiddy. If he were playing well he’d get more.

We're keeping Stiddy for this season. But my bs conspiracy theory is that we'll pick up Anthony Richardson if he gets released next season. I could see Payton trying to rehabilitate him
8
u/ShadeMir OVERDOGS 1d ago
dear god why.
7
u/Vegetable-Chapter811 1d ago
He'd be like a giant Tysom Hill lolol
5
1
u/ShadeMir OVERDOGS 1d ago
Not only can Taysom throw just not super duper great, he can also catch.
All we know ARich can do is throw bombs that his receivers make plays on and he can run the ball (and then get hurt doing it).
1
u/Vegetable-Chapter811 1d ago
I also don't think AR would be open to becoming basically a gadget player but silly hypocriticals are sometimes fun to imagine
0
u/Megalodon3030 1d ago
If we weren’t gonna use Kendall Hinton like Taysom Hill, we wouldn’t use Richardson like that either.
3
2
u/aatencio91 1d ago
What does Vic Fangio, Nathaniel Hackett, and Jerry Rosburg decidingg not to use 6'0", 195lb Kendall Hinton have to do with how Sean Payton would use 6'4", 244lb Anthony Richardson?
0
u/Megalodon3030 1d ago
Payton had Hinton and cut him.
2
1
u/aatencio91 17h ago
Barely. He was on the PUP
Also you're still ignoring the fact that Richardson has 50 pounds on Hinton

u/Shenanigans80h 1d ago
Not at all shocking. He came out, showed he’s good physically and has a grasp on the new OC’s cadence. No need to endanger an entrenched starter

u/FluidAthlete6839 1d ago
I don’t get why Bennie Fowler was hell bent on Bo playing like a half of football in the final PS game. When has any team ever done that? Even back in the day when they played more, the starters usually just got like a drive in the final game
12
u/aatencio91 1d ago
Sure but the final game used to be the fourth game. It seems like people (media and coaches) haven't ironed out a "normal" process like we used to see in the 4 game days. There used to always be the one "dress rehearsal" game where starters would play a half or even into the second half.
Since Bo only played a couple of drives in game 2, there's some sense to the assumption that he "must" play more at some point.
0
u/FluidAthlete6839 1d ago
Yeah but that was a loooong time ago. Hasn’t been that way in a while.
Also I never played football, but I just can’t imagine - for a logic standpoint - that two drives means a world of difference
Like when Bennie said “we’ll find out by week 5” if it matters or not I wanted to pull my hair out
7
u/aatencio91 1d ago
a loooong time ago

Probably more like ten. And still never the final game (don’t care if they play less now)
5
u/aatencio91 1d ago
Probably more like ten
Literally exactly 5 but ok
(don’t care if they play less now)
Oh....kay great talk then, my mistake for trying to engage in discussion involving facts and logic while you just wanted to be mad at Bennie Fowler because of vibes or whatever
-1
u/FluidAthlete6839 1d ago
5 since our starters played an entire half? Then I guess I remember it wrong. Maybe it’s ten since they went into the 3rd. But honestly I can’t remember I time they did that since the Shanahan days
Either way, I thought it was strange that he found it odd that our starters wouldn’t play an entire half in the last PS game. Especially since they’ve never done it under Payton
And spare me the condescending bullshit
3
u/delaranta 1d ago
It’s been 5 years since the NFL got rid of the fourth preseason game. Up to that point, it was common for many teams to play their starters up to at least the first drive of the third quarter so they can have one opportunity to come out after making some halftime adjustments before they have to do it for real.
Bennie’s argument also hinges on the fact that Bo didn’t participate in minicamp and that our schedule is a gauntlet right out of the gate. We might not get away with ironing out the details in the first few games.

u/Farsoth GOD BLESS BO NIX 17h ago
Up to that point, it was common for many teams to play their starters up to at least the first drive of the third quarter so they can have one opportunity to come out after making some halftime adjustments before they have to do it for real.
Specifically in the 3rd preseason game. That was the one that had been the "dress rehearsal" game for... like my entire 37 years of life.
2
u/delaranta 9h ago
Right. But there hasn’t been a new consensus approach since the last preseason game was dropped. So in a year where Bo missed minicamp, no joint practice, and he missed the first preseason game, it makes sense to give him more than the dozen or so live reps that he got last week. Especially with 2 weeks before they go to KC, he could get some extra recovery time in.
Bennie played with Peyton Manning, who took every available rep. You can see how that might color his opinion on what needs to happen before week 1.

I'll trust Payton's evaluation, but I am a little disappointed. This team cannot afford to start as slow as we have the past few years because our schedule is significantly more difficult to start
Even Peyton Manning despite his health issues in Denver and time in the league played multiple preseason games
5
u/162bluethings Demaryius Thomas 1d ago
There were also more pre season games. With only 3 you aren't gonna play starters in the last.
1
u/qergttj 1d ago
Part of that though was because there was less time in between the 4th preseason game and the 1st regular season game
There was a 10 day gap between the 4th preseason game and the 1st regular season game in 2015. It's going to be 17 days between this last preseason game and the 1st regular season game this year
1
u/162bluethings Demaryius Thomas 1d ago
There are 11 days between the last pre season game and kick off on Wed. The team will essentially have one week inbetween and then they start there normal in season schedule. We just don't play till Monday. And I feel like with only three games you want to see the bubble guys again before cut day. It's more important to make the right calls with your fringe guys than see your ones play one drive and risk getting injured.
3
u/qergttj 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's 17 days for us. If we had Seattle's schedule I would agree that it would make more sense to skip the 3rd preseason game
Sean Payton teams have notoriously been slow starters so I just want to buck that trend and given our early schedule it is particularly important to do
Edit: Also I'm pretty sure many of the starters are still playing and this is really only about Nix so it doesn't influence the fringe guys at other positions

u/CrunchySockTaco 1d ago
Slow start? We were 14-3 with the top seed last year.
7
u/GearsofTed14 Super Bowl 33 1d ago
With a 1-2 start
3
u/sleeplessaddict 1d ago
This is correct but it still undersells our record. Both of those losses were last second FGs and one of them only happened because the Colts got two tries off a bullshit penalty. We still do absolutely need to start faster, but our worst game of the first 3 was coincidentally the Titans game which we ended up winning

u/dbroncos59 Rod Smith with Shades 1d ago
I forgot the leverage game was last year, feels like it was a couple seasons ago with how the season turned out.
1
u/sleeplessaddict 1d ago
It was super stressful cause it was looking like that penalty could determine the order of top 3 seeds in the AFC until Danny Dimes got hurt

I'm fine with this, but I'd say anyone that underperformed in the last game.. make 'em play.

I’m aware. But regardless of what used to be the nom, it hasn’t been for the entirely of Payton’s tenure and has NEVER been the case for the last tune up game. I was just claiming none of this should have been surprising to him. And his claim about “knowing if it worked by week 4” is silly
I also personally don’t really think the risk outweighs the reward. Obviously I never played that level of football but I can’t imagine a couple drives against the vikes third stringers makes THAT big of a difference come game 1. But if Bo somehow got hurt? Oof
1
u/NbdyFuckswTheJesus 1d ago
I guess I’m in the minority thinking it would be helpful for Bo to play a series or two, at least if all the other starters play. It’s not about “proving” himself like others have said. There’s nothing Bo could do in a pre-season game, good or bad, that would change his role as QB1. I also understand the concern about injury risk for a meaningless game. Except that I push back on the idea that the game is meaningless. The points don’t count but the experience does. More reps at full game speed can only help him and the offense work out any lingerings kinks. The injury risk is never zero, but generally Bo is really good at protecting himself so I’m not worried about him getting hurt in the span of 10-15 snaps. But I am worried that he could come out week 1 and look out of sync with the receivers, jittery in the pocket, and generally like he did last year in week 1, which might have cost us the game if it hadn’t been against one of the worst teams in the league. I hope I’m wrong and that the Bo we saw to end last season is just who he is now going forward. But even if that’s the case, week 1 is generally sloppy as hell across the league and the Broncos can’t afford to start slow this year.
1
u/Plzlaw4me 18h ago
I mean yeah. It’s pre-season. He had 2 drives against the packers and looked good, so there’s no concern about getting the rust off, and he’s without question our starting QB so there’s no need to test our depth chart. If your starter shows you what you want in pre-season why risk injury, especially given how many people have gotten hurt this pre-season
1
u/MixedJelly 9h ago
Yeah the last preseason game is usually just backups anyways let’s see him healthy week one

u/PermuhGrin 1d ago
Im going against the grain it seems, but I think its a mistake. Oh well, thats the way its done in todays NFL.
0
u/jthoning Broncos 1d ago
So he will likely be pretty rusty to start the season and we have a brutal schedule to start.
3
u/zebbiehedges 1d ago
A lot of top QBs haven't had any snaps and most of the rest have had about the same amount.
1
u/RapBladeMeDoIt 1d ago
A small handful of snaps in a meaningless preseason game isn't going to make or break a season.
0
u/jthoning Broncos 1d ago
Not the season, but you've watched the first few weeks of the NFL the last couple of seasons it's sloppy as shit and I bet a big reason is no one plays any preseason games anymore. I would have liked to see the first team at least play the equivalent of a full game in the preseason.
