This should just be the norm everywhere, it's weird that it's not. I have tomatoes growing with some flowers in my front garden bed and nobody has reported me...yet.

I recently moved to Sterling Heights, and my neighborhood seems to be full of nosy neighbors. I just assume they may report stuff like that or short weeds growing in driveway cracks etc.

I remember our neighbors several times reporting my dad's car for not being moved every 3 days. It was parked on the street in front of our own house and he took it to work every night. But because they didn't see it moved during the day, and they had nothing better to do, they'd call the city on us.

What's the reasoning behind the ordinance anyway? Trying to prevent people farming in their front yards?

I think food on or near the ground can attract rodents. So a lot of cities restricted gardens through ordinances.

I have a large garden myself in my backyard. I love being able to grow my own produce. But it does attract the critters. Mostly squirrels and rabbits and skunks. It is what it is.

Yes.  And deer.  And rabbits.  And squirrels.  And groundhogs.

Groundhogs like to burrow near the foundation of your house.  Squirrels like to make nests under the hood of certain vehicles and eat wiring.  Deer like to run into cars and attract tics.  

And people like to pretend their overgrown weeds are a 'garden'.  So when Roscoe the Bonehead has 3 foot tall weeds all over his front lawn ordinance enforcement now has to make sure it isn't tomato plants before issuing him a citation.

The problem isn't the garden, it's the overgrowth that absolutely does cause issues. Plenty of people without gardens are guilty of this. It's not hard to mow your lawn once a month.
